I like some of it, not all. I still prefer the artists i've grown up listening to. Michael Jackson, Elton John, George Michael, The Doors, The Queen, Madonna and Prince.

I like all kinds of stuff, contemporary stuff, old stuff... It makes me laugh when someone says they're really into music and then claim something is "before their time".

I'm not keen at all on most pop songs. I'd rarely listen to anything on the top 40/'mainstream' because I find them boring/overplayed. I listen to radio 1 a lot though so end up listening to so many pop songs.
But I love music, listen to about 5-10 hours worth every day. I tend to like more indie style music, such as Dan Croll, Vance Joy (Cannot wait for his album ahh), Arctic Monkeys, Vampire weekend, Foals, etc. Which I suppose is 'todays music'.

Nope. Can't stand pretty much everything I hear. All my favourite artists are of yesteryear. The 80's is my favourite era.

Older music for me is 90's & early 00's when i was growing up and i prefer the music during that time a lot more than the music being released now.

And I mentioned chart music and radio 1 because its representative of the most popular music at any moment, even if the audience is mainly teenagers. Last edited by MTVN; 07-05-2014 at 11:39 AM. |

Hmm, I think yes, I do. I would say firstly and foremostly I'm a fan of pop music; yet I don't find myself checking out the BBC Top 40 very often or using the iTunes charts to find new stuff, I think I just kind of pick up music through recommendations and random discoveries or even posts here on TiBB. I like a mixture of music from now and from the past, I think really you just need to know where to look. The thing about the past is that we have the benefit of hindsight - we can drop all the crap from our collective public conscience and just hold up the good stuff and it seems like the past is better. I'd bet any money that the Adeles, Kasabians, The Killers, Beyoncés of this world will be heralded just as The Beatles, The Supremes, Elton John and Madonna are now - but we try and gloss over eras like big haired glam rock with sub standard one hit wonder bands from the 80s because that kind of stuff was very of its time. There have always been trend setters and trend followers.
Basically I think there IS good music nowadays, it's just that unfortunately the outlets that are responsible for delivering music to the masses aren't necessarily interested in playing meaningful music; trap/dubstep influenced dance tracks are what's considered cool right now. |

Take somebody like Jake Bugg for instance, a young lad writing, performing and playing the music himself. he's far more important to the evolution of music then Harry Styles is, but you wouldn't think it. |

What LemonJam said. Chart stuff has gone right downhill but there are still good tunes out there. You just have to find them.
The teen pop fluff of the early noughties was also a crap time for chart hits... always been swings and roundabouts with it. |

Don't listen to radio 1 however I do listen to marvin humes on capital week nights. I love most of the stuff he plays and yes its chart stuff. What gets on my nerves is when people harp on about the beatles etc. I personally DO NOT LIKE the beatles, there ive said it. They were over 40 years ago for gods sake, yet people still harp on and on.

Not sure what the OP is asking. There has been poor music in every era and boy bands in every era. People forget the Beatles were a boy band in their very early years. I dont think there are more or less boy bands than in previous eras and I dont think they are better or worse than in other eras.
I think there are fewer successful artists who make and write their own music but then there have always been those artists who don't write their own stuff too. Elvis didnt write not one of his hits. As I Say not sure what the OP is saying.

Always something for me to listen to. If it isn't Trap Rap,Concious Hip Hop or some Grime then it's some dance track or Proper chart stuff I actually like. Only thing I could of wished for was being old enough to have witnessed Pac and Biggie when they were alive.

..I think the thing about music is that it evokes feelings/memories/moments/nostalgia etc so it's easy to think that the music of 'your era/youth' was the best because I also think that when your younger, it's the time when music can mean the most to you/when you're experiencing some things for the first time and quite emotional things...anyway, some of what is seen as great music now, wasn't always seen that way 'back in the day'...I think the fact that there is probably lots of/more bad music now is just that there is so much more music out there really/ so it's good because to me it means there is also lots of and more good music out there as well...

I like all types of music except for rap, I am not keen on that, some of it but not much.
As someone said above, there has been good music in all eras and bad too. I personally get a bit fed up of so many 'guest' appearances on releases in the present time,so many releases are this one featuring this singer or a combination of different artistes on the same single release. However to answer the question simple, yes I like today's music but I prefer the much older, meaningful and singalong stuff of the 1960's. It has taken me ages to acquire loads of cd's from that era and I never tire of playing it. Last edited by joeysteele; 10-05-2014 at 02:55 PM. |
