Good Will Hunting

Spoiler:

So I rewatched it with my daughter and she loved it, for me it was even better than i remembered. Robin Williams is so good in it but his character has such a sadness about him that i feel might have been close to how Robin felt alot of times himself, maybe that's why on this watch it felt more emotional?

Anyway, great film, great writing by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck too.

Loved, loved Loved it

9.5/10

Spoiler:

I think my main problem before watching this film is I despise Ben Aflleck so was not looking forward to the fact he starred in it, let alone co wrote it. Thankfully he was hardly in the movie and lets be honest Damon probably wrote most of the film so I am just going to pretend Ben Afleck had nothing to do with the movie.

Overall it was a good film. Williams, Damon, Driver and Skarsgard were all great, and it was nice to see Williams in a serious role and different from his usually comedy parts. I was intrigued by most of the characters; strangely I liked Skarsgard and Williams more together and Damon and Driver together more than Damon and Williams characters.

I liked it and Damon did a decent job on the script, but I found myself getting bored towards the end, plus with the fact Ben Affleck (his character had no purpose at all in this movie) was in it I rate it a bit lower - 3/5

Good Will Hunting

Spoiler:

I thought it was ok, but I didn't really enjoy it overall. There were some good moments (my favourite scene was probably the emotional one between Will and Skylar in the bedroom) but overall I found it slightly boring. I can appreciate a lot of the complexities in it, but I was never really intruiged, and I just didn't care enough about Will or most of the other characters.

I enjoyed Robin Williams a lot though, he really was an incredible actor and I'm glad I've seen this film just to see his performance in it. It's probably one of the best performances/characterisations I've seen, it's just that overall the film wasn't really for me. I'll give it 6/10.

It was kind of the other way round for me. I preferred the last half of the film to the first half. I was actually tempted to give up halfway through but I kept going because I wanted to see Williams' full performance. (And you're not alone with the Affleck hate, I don't know why but I can't stand him haha!)

It really is... I don't know if we really need to being as we are doing classic films and all... can we revisit the whole spoiler concept??

Just watched Good Will Hunting......

Spoiler:

This is the first time i've seen this film and i have to admit i was transfixed from the opening scene to the ending, it is a brilliant film and i have to admit that i cried at the part where Sean was telling Will that it wasn't his fault, my heart felt like it were breaking. I felt so sad for Sean as it was apparent that he's quite clearly not come to terms with the death of his wife, i loved how he spoke with so much love and adoration for his wife and the fact he wouldn't change a thing with his life. I felt that in a sense Will helped Sean with his grief, just as Sean helped Will move on. You understand at the beginning of the film that Will has suffered trauma in his childhood and it becomes apparent just how much he was abused as the film goes on, Damon was outstanding playing the part of Will. Just as Williams was outstanding playing the part of Sean. I also got teary when Afflecks character went to pick Will up and he wasn't there #end of an era. What i loved most about this film is the outstanding acting, my favourite scenes were between Williams and Damon. They were intense. It also made me feel sad knowing that we won't get to see the amazing Robin Williams in anymore films 10/10

What would everyone define as a classic movie?

Is it a movie that is really popular and has won oscars, or a movie over a certain age?

Is a classic movie in the eye of the beholder?

I'm not sure, there's loads of movies I would describe as classic that most people would probably disagree with But as a general rule I'd probably go with what you've said, one that's won awards/has positive reviews and is more than about 10/15 years old maybe? Or a film that has had some kind of significant impact on the industry?

Yeah I think leaving it to open interpretation is the best way forward

I haven't watched the movie this week - I might tonight actually - but off the top of my head I'd have given it a 9/10 when I did watch it. Mostly for Williams' role, but Damon/Driver were pretty good too and I think Ben Affleck gets more hate than he deserves. His career nadir was 98-05 really, this was a solid performance for him and I think he's written off as a director/writer (which has since been amended with his Argo wins).

The story is lovely, and I generally love movies with a teacher/student relationship at the heart of it (no not like that ) - like The History Boys. The soundtrack was nice as well, and it's just rather uplifting. I'll watch it again tonight.

(I'm not sure if you need scores/ratings Ammi but I've given one anyway, wasn't sure if you were doing an aggregate rating thing like we've tried before for albums/movies clubs on here).

Are we taking it in turns to suggest films by the way, or putting a list together or something?

Spoiler:

I wouldn't call Good Will Hunting a classic, decent film maybe, but not classic.

It's not a film I could watch over and over again, I've seen it once, and don't intend to watch it again.

Most reviews on here so far are spot on about the stand-out parts of the film, the main one being Williams performance which is fantastic.

...re- watching it also reminded me of how much it was one of those movies that felt a little 'un-finished' in that it left you wondering how his life was going to be in choosing love as it were...would his gift still be something that was part of his life as well, would it all work out for him and Skylar etc...and I always think it's such a good sign when I get so absorbed and involved in characters like that...great movie, great cast and a general 9/10 on the film scale, I think...

I watched Good Will Hunting. I hadn't seen it before.
Spoiler:

It's a good story, with very good acting. I don't know if I would give it a 9/10 or anything like that. I think I've seen other surrogate father-son and genius type films I have liked better.

Maybe it would have been better if Will was older, like later 20s. When I heard they said he had just turned 21, I thought it made it sound like a normal coming-of-age story and he would have worked out what to do with his life anyway, without any help. Also, to be honest, I found some of Will's friends a bit annoying.

I thought the best line of dialogue - or most memorable to me - was the exchange where Ben Affleck's character says he'll wake up one morning and he'll be 50, and still doing the same job, but that's fine.

The scene I found emotional was when Will breaks up with his girlfriend.

Another thing was I found some of the dialogue difficult to hear, with the Boston accents.

I'll try and watch some of the other films on the list.

What I took "classic" to mean really in this context is a movie that's over 15ish years old that we enjoyed

I think it's pretty subjective anyway what "classic" is in this instance
