I think there are many valid examples of cultural appropriation, but given that there are historical examples of dreads in pretty much every major civilisation (Nordic/Viking, Buddhist, Hindi, African, North American, Greek, Aboriginal...) it's a bit of an iffy area for me in this instance.

The idea of a white guy with dreads just usually conjures the stoner-hippie stereotype and it's... a difficult look to pull off. And to be fair, most backlash nowadays is because the look's been popularised thanks to Rastafarian culture and it's a bit...copycat. But... I think it's fine. Just... choice.

The first person to have dreadlocks was believed to be Egyptian but it's part if a religious look in Rastafarian in the same way Sikhs wont cut their hair and it became a popular culture with the emergence of Reagge

I wasn't even questioning if I "should", it didn't occur to me there'd even be a problem I just wanted to know if I could undo them if I don't like them or if work wants me back before summer hols

I think you'd have to cut them off Oliver if you didn't like them/ didn't want them anymore. Then give your hair a good comb and brush through .
