The caves were clearly very dangerous - so who on earth endorsed one 25 year-old taking a bunch of school kids down there, it has cost at least one diver his life trying to save them. I hope this is addressed once they are safely out.

Well said, Brillo. I thought the same thing when this news first broke. I pray this has a good ending but as you say, questions have to be asked once the boys are hopefully rescued.

The parents of 12 boys stranded inside a northern Thailand cave have written to their children for the first time and to the coach who led them inside, telling him: “Please don’t blame yourself.”

“To all the kids,” one letter, written by the mother of Nattawut Takamsai, 14, said. “We are not mad at you at all. Do take good care of yourself. Don’t forget to cover yourself with blankets as the weather is cold. We’re worried. You will come out soon.”

She wrote to Ekkapol Chantawong, the coach: “We want you to know that no parents are angry with you at all, so don’t you worry about that.”

[Elon Musk sends engineers to help Thai cave rescue
The Tesla and SpaceX boss suggests a "1m diameter nylon tube" could be inflated inside the tunnels "like a bouncy castle".]

I haven't read up on details, but I had read about the Navy Seal who drowned.

I've done spelunking in the past and there are always risks no matter how experienced you are. A friend of ours who was trained once got trapped with his friend due to rising water (i.e. rain) and so they had to wait until it leveled off... they legitimately thought they were going to die. Anyway I don't think taking in so many people at once was very wise... it's one thing to have a small group, but then a lot can go wrong with much larger groups... i.e. if someone got injured, who would stay behind, etc? I don't think a school in the US would've allowed it for the liability issues alone.

I think it's premature to blame the coach for anything, it's just feeding into a culture of blame. The marine gave his life to help find stranded people, I doubt he was concerned with blaming the coach for this incident in the first place.

Yeah apparently it's normally fine but the rains started unusually early

Yup, It could just as easily be a case that the rain forced them deeper into the cave rather than them getting in over their heads and stranded.

it's not really time for the blame game. The rescue is now well under way and should finish sometime this afternoon. Lets hope for the best possible outcome and the least loss of life.

...yeah the least loss of life is all we can hope for with both the rescue team and those trapped...I’m not really a ‘prayer’ person but I do think in times like this when we’re all so helpless as to the outcome...all we can do is to try to feel as much positive energy as we can and try to focus that on those people...which I guess is what prayer is..?...so yes, praying and hoping for the best outcome, maybe a ‘miracle’ outcome of no loss of life and safety for all....

Hoping they all get out safely. It sounds difficult and frightening.

The international effort to rescue twelve Thai children and their coach, including British divers, is the kind of thing that makes you proud of humanity and gives you hope for the world.

Someone said the other day an inflatable Trump baby made them proud to be British. It's the British divers and people like them that make me proud to be British. Yes England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales I mean all of you.
