You're talking about the human world, not the actual physical world.

The dog or cat provides much less destruction of the actual planet, therefore is of more worth, seeing as though all the things you listed are in some contributing to the ruining of the planet and it's environment. Surely that makes that things life of less worth, not more?

Well, I don't know about you, but I certainly don't have a relationship on the same level with my dogs as I do with my kids, husband, siblings, friends etc. Are we superior to animals? As a human being I would say yes I value members of my own species above other species absolutely.

Where did I say anything about saving the planet???? Where did I say anything about the human world or the physical world???? Don't try and twist my answer to fit into what you want to put across. I do resent the notion that humans are a superior species, we are equal to animals and it's just narcissistic of us to think otherwise, and in an ideal world we wouldn't (meaning we wouldn't kill animals for food or fun, see them as commodities, parade them around as circus performers etc) but as a human being I find it very difficult to consider the prospect of me saving an animal over a human. It doesn't feel right, and I guess that's because it's ingrained in most us from birth, it's an inherent feeling. One of your own kind. Unless you're a misanthrope I think it's difficult to feel otherwise. Whether there's anything wrong with that, well...that's a different debate. I know I wouldn't feel comfortable with somebody saving an animal over a child, but appreciate that others may see it differently. As I said, we are all equal, but as a human myself I'd struggle to betray one of my own kind.

Yeah this is the thing when this argument gets brought up tbh. Where does the line get drawn? Who gives anyone the right to decide an ant or a spiders life is less important than that of your pet rabbit or your nextdoor neighbour etc..do those who regard animals as the same as humans ever use fly spray to kill that pesky bluebottle that just wont piss off?

As for the original question, I would like to say I would save the human without a thought, but if faced with the situation it might be different..as with all hypothetical situations. To some people pets are like family. I dont have pets now and I have never really had a pet that I thought more of than other people so i cant imagine saving a pet over human life, but I know some people do think a LOT of their pets. For example my mother in law, her cat is pretty much her life.
