I don't think they're trying to achieve anything. They've tried peaceful protests and they've tried violence, and nothing works. My guess is that they're just sick and tired of this constantly happening to their community, so they're justifiably lashing out.

And if this was a one off incident I'd agree with you, but it's not. This has been happening to their community since forever.

You can't view police brutality against black people in terms of individual instances, especially in the US.

I’m not even one to scream police brutality & racism at every given situation but this is on the high end of the racist & awful act spectrums. It’s still bad regardless when lives are lost obviously but this is one of the worst and most blatantly wrong of these situations that I’ve ever seen. There are certain cases that deserve justice and outrage and backlash on police stepping over their boundaries, this one probably more than ever. Don’t see how anyone could defend it in any way. The guy was helpless on the ground and the cop never let up at any point. Not sure if that knee to neck position is even allowed or necessary but to stay that way for mins on the guy, even past consciousness, is unacceptable & literally murder.

I think people don’t really crasp the fact that Even in the nineteen fifties African Americans had to give up their seats to white people by law.

And they had no real rights

And racism was a part of every day life.

Yeah, desperation behind centuries of racial abuse will be easily solved by you pointing out how silly they're being. Look up black wall street if you want to see what happened when black people made their own communities in the 1920's.

They're not trying to show anyone anything, they're angry and frustrated. They're not acting on a desire to prove anything or change anything - they're realising that absolutely nothing is changing, saying "**** it" and flipping tables .

And then of course a small number will take advantage of the chaos and use it to loot, etc., and people will dismiss the whole thing as being "all about looting".

I worked in the states in 1996, in South Carolina abd there was still a massive white / black divide then. I was with some friends who had car trouble when we were on a road trip and we took the car to the garage and the owner would only talk to me (I was the only white person). Apparently, had I not been with them the car would not have been fixed. It shocked me at the time how blatant this guy was but they said that kind of treatment was just the tip of the iceberg.

That's disgusting and not that long ago at all. I worked in the states myself around the same time but I was in Boston and things weren't that bad there thankfully, it's odd how different things are state to state in the US, the East and West coasts seem much more liberal and ahead
