Default The Greatest TV Shows of the Noughties

On C4 Tonight from 9:00 to 10:35pm

Quote:
A celebration of the greatest TV of the past decade, drawn from a survey of leading TV critics and industry figures, and a YouGov public poll. As well as superlative drama series like The Wire and the breathtaking photography of Planet Earth, the Noughties saw the rise and fall of reality series such as Big Brother, The Apprentice and The X-Factor. Stars including David Tennant and Jeremy Clarkson debate whether this has been a golden age of entertainment or a cultural recession.
I wonder where Big Brother will be placed, if they have any sense it will be number 1.

EDIT:
01) Top Gear
02) The Apprentice
03) Doctor Who
04) Britains Got Talent
05) QI
06) The X Factor
07) The Simpsons
08) The Office
09) Planet Earth
10) Life On Mars
11) FRIENDS
12) Harry Hill's TV Burp
13) Shameless
14) Grand Designs
15) Gavin and Stacey
16) Coronation Street
17) Spooks
18) Strictly Come Dancing
19) I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here
20) Dragons Den

Too many people against it for it to be number one despite being one of the most important shows of the decade, and most people reckon it's been jumping the shark since 2006, but it should definately place high.

It'll definitly make the chart, seeing as it's in the advert. I'd be happy/suprised if it made the top 10.

BB should be #1 or its a farce. The noughties have been defined through reality TV and z list celebrities. Big Brother started all of that in this decade and not only did it start the boom of reality TV, but it also defined how reality TV is approached. For example The Apprentice wasn't a trashy show at all, but it suddenly became popular when the BBC made it into a Big Brother-style show. And X Factor never really took off until 2007 when Simon started headline grabbing. From Popstars The Rivals right through to X Factor 3 it was about the same amount of people watching each variation. They've managed to double the audience since they took the new approach. Big Brother also started the spin off show, not just for reality TV but for the likes of awards shows and arguably dramas (e.g. Footballers Wives Extra Time).

Without BB we wouldn't have the z list celeb culture we have (whether that is a good or bad thing is open to dispute though). It was the BB housemates that were first on the cover of Heat, followed by other oxygen thieves like Katie Price and Kerry Katona etc. They probably wouldn't have got their TV documentaries had it not been for Big Brother. Thats kind of dying out now, at the same time the ratings for BB fell through the floor and Jade Goody dying, so its all kind of symbolic and a bit poignant really.

And then you can say it has tackled issues such as racism, class and mental health as well as showing appearances aren't everything (a bandwagon BGT has jumped on this year as though its something brand new even though Big Brother did it first). Its made the viewers a bit more broadminded and understanding I think (even if we still laugh at the freaks).

Then above all, it has been a very entertaining show with a very loyal following until the last year or so with a huge following online. I mean what other fanbases will get excited at a 2 second eye flash? I haven't seen an online fan base like this for any other show.

Even though noone watches it anymore, EVERYONE has had something to say about the show whether good or bad, and nobody can deny the impact its had on TV and popular culture. So anything short of number 1 is a joke.

#1 was already revealed as:

(Top Gear)

It was determined by industry experts and public polls, so it would never have reached #1.

I know it's hugely popular but that's a riddiculous choice for number #1 because it's still a niche show for certain people with a certain interest.

What a joke.

Taking everything into account - Writing, producing, acting, ect, Lost easily wins. Sopranos, 24, The Shield, The wire and all them should be up there too. But I'm guessing it will be filled with all kinds of reality tv.

What a joke.
Thats what they think. It has a massive female following and people who have no idea about cars who like to think they do. Its more about the presenters in the same way X Factor is about the judges. I don't see how its the greatest show of the decade, it has done NOTHING for TV or culture and is practically identical to any other similar shows (Five air some).

as long as The Office, Peep Show, Heroes and Family Guy feature, I'm happy.

I won't get my hopes up for The Green Wing, immense though it was.

Family Guy was one of the greatest shows of the ninties and probably made the list of a simmilar countdown ten years ago under the name 'The Simpsons'.

I would much rather Futurama make the list.

Futurama > Family Guy > The Simpsons

It broke from the usual cartoon sitcom format

It isn't, Five stole the presenters, production crew and format just before BBC axed it first time around

South Park is far better than the Simpsons, Family Guy and Futurama put together.
