Default I really want to join a gym.

And get into better shape but Im too self-conscious

I think Id be tense and hate it because Id worry Im being judge, especially if I know somebody there

Anybody go? Am I over-thinking the scenario?

Most people in my gym are pretty fat, you only get the odd few that are actually in good shape. Might just be the time of day I go because people are in work, dunno.

You don't need a gym.

Stairs (do a few step ups).

Cans (do a few lifts)

A path (walk/jog)

Jords, just walk sweetie. I lost weight just walking without meaning to. Don't get on the bus or in the car or whatever. Just walk.

I hate saying this cos I hate people dictating stuff to me but you really don't need to pay to lose weight or keep fit.

I wasn't saying you were fat

I just meant it in the sense that if most the people there are fat they aren't going to be judging people on how they look/are doing on the machines, because chances are they are going to be doing worse themselves

Cans as in -

And I do a bit of jogging in the evenings sometimes but its gone far too cold :/

Loads of people say walking is really good but wont it take ages to have an affect?

Just grab a couple of cans of beans or soup from the cupboard. Use them as weights

No, pop may explode

You don't have to 'weightlift' them. It's just a resistance.

And why give a flying fig what people think? Don't

im a personel trainer and most of my clients are the same as you.
so i go round and show them they can use things a round the house wth the help of removeable handle grips etc. but im mostly there as a motorvational purpose because unlike a gym its easy to crash on the sofa for a little rest and end up in the biscuit tin watching cash in the attic.

I joined a gym for the first time over summer - as Locke said, most people at the gym are there to lose weight/get fit, it's honestly nothing like you're fearing it might be, I had the same fears. Go there, don't catch anybody's eye, just get on a treadmill (or other machine, whatever you want to do) and start running. I found that it's best to jog/walk for a bit, then run for a short burst (I started out doing 30 seconds and then got up to running for 2 minutes) before dropping back down to jog/walk speed and built up from barely able to do 5km to being able to do over 5 miles in an hour, just by going every other day, in the space of about 6 weeks. Since then I've put it all back on 'cause I haven't been but I'm planning on joining a gym here in Germany in the next few days. You can ask to be shown around the gym, most gyms should have somebody who can do this when you go for the first time, and they'll show you how to work the machines and ask you what you want to do - they are there to help you, it's not scary at all, I promise!

Noone cares about anyone else in the gym. I go all the time and have done since I was 16. The one I go to is full of posers and Geordie Shore types but thats just because of the type I go to (Virgin Active) so just stay clear of any big chains like that if you think you'll be intimidated by anyone

If you're really that self conscious the best thing might be to start things off and tone up at home before going and you might feel a bit better about yourself, but really noone will judge you

I like seeing fat and skinny people in the gym, just makes me think good on them for making the effort

I get so self conscious in gyms too. So scary.

But ordering some dumbbells will do wonders, I got some in the summer and it was the start of me losing weight then I started doing loads of sit ups and press ups and then went swimming lots and now its fallen off.

But the best thing is that school meals are gross so I basically eat just meat and salad now and it does the trick. Giving up processed carbohydrates also helped massively, swap all the processed grains for whole grains.

The gyms were I live are full of posers, I prefer walking/running on the treadmill or outside or using my power step, and like others said you can exercise just as well at home, even if the staircase you have is a spiral one you can use the first step to do step ups, if you don't feel comfortable walking on your own you can take the dog (if you have one).

it depends what time you go to them. Never go when it's busy, It's the worst thing for your self esteem. Some are open later at night, so maybe go then

I'm going to go a gym once I get a car because I hate walking around in public. The one I will go to is free, and I can pretty much go anytime I need. I can't wait /vain

Buy a dog that needs lots of walks and then you have no choice I have to walk my dog for 2 hours each day and I hate every second of it, but its worth it to keep weight off and they're cute so its a win/win
