Nick Clegg attracted ridicule after hastily attempting to withdraw a press release in which he referred to opponents of gay marriage as 'bigots'.

Withdrawing a comment is like trying to unring a bell. It can't be done and what's more it makes you look foolish and weak. Politicians (in all parties) do it all the time against better advice. Clegg should have the courage of his convictions and stand by his comment.

Wrong again. Being truthful is always the best way. However some people dont always say things exactly how they mean them and the words come out wrong. so which part of Clegg's original comments were untruthful? What he said was spot on. What he said was absolutely in line with the Lib Dem ideology about gay marriage. He didn't retract the statement because it's not what Lib Dem's believe, he retracted it because of the backlash. that is cowardly and wrong.

His apology is the mistake, not his original statement.
