Former Archbishop of Canterbury says ‘panic’ about the niqab is 'largely misplaced' even if young children cannot see their teacher’s face
![]() There is no need to “panic” about Muslim primary school teachers wearing the full-face veil in class, the former Archbishop of Canterbury, Lord Williams, has insisted. He said concerns that young children would struggle to learn from a woman whose face was covered were “largely misplaced” and that there are other ways to "read” what people are saying. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/reli...-Williams.html what do you think? |

I don't know how comfortable I'd be with leaving my children with someone who I wouldn't even recognise if I passed them in the street

If that scary photo of him is anything to go by - he should be wearing a niqab, and if that is the kind of crap which comes out of his mouth, he should be wearing a gag.
Out of touch and totally irrelevant. |

It's just not practical for a teacher to wear a veil as it will impede their ability to teach and I reckon most Muslim teachers probably wouldn't want to try to keep a class of rowdy kids under control whilst their vision is obscured by a veil anyway.

I don't agree with this at all
Also I see this turning into another anti-Muslim thread .

The covering of the face is to prevent other men looking at the woman.
I can't say I agree with this, children need stimulating lessons especially children who are struggling with speech and language or reading and being able to see facial expression is important to child development so I can't really see his point here. |

I don't think comments like this from an out-of-touch, slighly cracked-pot like Lord Williams are helpful at all. I think his comment is more likely to have the opposite effect to the one he was going for.

Far from being out of touch I feel his comments are progressive it would be a crackpot idea to suggest that her niqab impaired her teaching.
That said a sixth form student was recently banned for wearing a niqab, so it's unusual there is an argument for them for teachers and the opposite for students.

It's strange that, considering his position, this man didn't stand up for the woman who was sacked for wearing a crucifix, stating that it was just "jewellery" and not an article of faith. And yet he's calling for Muslim women to be able to cover their face in a classroom full of children.

Good point, I think there was an issue with the students wearing it that they could be anyone, the same could be said for the teacher, PC going mad yet again.

I would be amazed that any school would even consider hiring a teacher who would look like that
are they mad? |

Thinking about it cherie as it's a primary school you're right, it most likely would make a difference in the lower years I agree.

tbh I have some teachers at my school who are muslim and they don't feel the need to wear one.. I think a hijab is fine however a burkha is questionable.
