Now how will Turkey respond to this... do you think we're heading for a regional proxy war between Turkey, Iran and Saudi Arabia?

Turkey has been taking Syrian refugees and displaced civilians for the last few years and although its been under great strain it's done sterling work. There have been cross-border skirmishes, a Turkish fighter was shot down a couple of years ago, for instance. They have a strong army and air force but I don't think they'll go in all guns blazing because Turkey is a member of NATO and any response to this will probably be an international one. One thing's for sure, I doubt any Turkish people will be claiming that this act of terrorism is in retaliation for the indiscriminate bombing on towns like some people in this country would claim.

fair points livia. THe UN and nato have been asleep for far too long now. This requires an enormous united campaign to root out this worldwide threat. However the strategy has to be all consuming and united , unlike blair and bush' idiotic masterplan, which didn't even include equipping our soldiers, not did it include a post war plan.
Our approach has to be infinitely smarter and has to take in ALL factors. Its like one big real life game of risk...Why are they doing this, how are they doing this, who is funding them, how best do we all target this, how to we counter this evil, whilst limiting the danger to the masses. We need to look at all the factors, the economics, the geo politics, the players, the allies, the enemies, the legal and moral issues, the consequences and benefits of any action or inaction. We also need to try and win more hearts and minds on our own doorstep. Dave has done some good things already. The European union is also a massive player in all this. Their policy to allow open borders has clearly put more Europeans in jeopardy, as its almost impossible to keep a vigilant check on everyone. They've also made it harder for Africans and the middle east to trade with the EU which in turn has lead to greater economic poverty and instability in those regions. Of course our arms dealings are at the heart of the matter. Selling weapons to unstable nations and known criminals, is an act of treason and should be treated as such. The main issue the EU the UN , NATO and the US should all be targeting far more seriously. But how will we find the will to cut back on billions of sales? Not with Turkey I don't think because of the points Livia raises but it's already happening between Iran and the Saudis if you look at the conflict in Yemen atm. Things are only to be tenser now as well after the signing of the nuclear agreement with Iran which the Saudis are treating as the West siding with Shias in the Middle East's sectarian war

Maybe O'Bama will see IS as his last major target as part of his legacy. The US economy seems in a far better place, he's got his national health insurance obamacare, hes had many foreign policy successes.... Now the big man has got less than 18 months to bring down IS

Nah they stalled for years because they didn't want to piss off the Saudis and it's only now they're choosing to steam ahead with closing it because it has the bonus side effect of sticking the boot into the Saudi empire for not playing ball with America. Call me a conspiracy theorist but the timing's a little too perfect.
