Default So you're baking a cake...

And in the recipe it says to put it in the oven for 23-28 minutes...
How long do you put it on for?
  • 23 mins because you can always put it in longer if it's not cooked but not for less
  • In between- better to be safe than sorry?
  • 28 mins- Ensures it's cooked whilst also reducing the risk of the cake collapsing when you open the oven
Poll incoming
The results could be interesting

23 and opening the oven to check how it looks, stick a toothpick and see if it comes out dry. And then carefully decide if and how long to continue with the oven.

The likelihood of me cooking a cake is very low, so I'm sorry I can't help x

I'd go for 25 since it's the easiest to check by the clock.

well it depends really ....

Is the cake at the top of the oven, is it at the bottom, is the oven fan assisted? Thats the reason for the variations in timings

Check it from 23 minutes and take out when you see it's ready.

Ovens aren't magical contraptions, it still requires thought from the person using it.

This and this.... every oven is different ...that's why the recipe gives a spread on time

On a side note... Marsh the baker

..I would have done 28 minutes just because I know that my oven always seems to take the longer time with these things and baking...maybe even a cheeky 30 minutes or so if I was feeling risqué...a little top tip though with cakes..it's good to switch the fan off in a fan oven if that's what you have because that can make the cake dry out a little and a conventional non fan thing is better, I find...how was the cake Tom..?...it must have been delicious because I don't see any crumbs here for breakfast...

Hey good on you, I make Christmas cake and others and as you say they are fun to make.
In fact I prefer to do all my own cooking anyway.

I would say more near the 23 mins. I am baking a Victoria sponge at the moment and it had better turn out better than the last one. It's at 20 mins now and almost looks done.
