When I first visited America as a teenager, I was shocked by how big people were compared to Brits. In more recent visits I'm shocked at their super-size. British people have probably caught up with how I first saw a lot of American people and if we keep on eating fast food, sugar-laden drinks, and American type diets, ten years from now its not going to be uncommon to see super-sized people over here.
Children, even babies are being diagnosed with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Its now the norm to see podgy six-year-olds. Before I get shouted down, I know there are illnesses and medication that can pile on the pounds. My niece is on female hormones because she has no pituitary gland and the side effects of that is obesity. She's bullied at school because of her weight gain which is not her fault but then its not the fault of a podgy child who has no health condition either. I think its something we need to openly talk about because obesity really is becoming an epidemic.

My solution? For every pound one is overweight, a pound is deducted from benefits.

![]() Anyway, less money is likely to make people fatter tbh. Healthy food tends to be much more expensive. So chopping away at peoples income will just make them put more weight on Last edited by Vicky.; 12-10-2017 at 05:54 PM. |

i doubt very much that the cost of "healthy food" is a main driver to convenience food

What's worrying is the increase of over weight children. Better education maybe for cooking simple but healthy meals might help although I'm not sure how that could be done plus maybe a bit more physical activities in school?

The main driver to convenience food is high stress / high pressure lifestyles tbh. By the time it gets to dinner time, people can't be bothered putting together a proper meal, so it's oven-crap or takeaways. Of course, also, we're a generation or two down the line from the start of this - so a lot of people simply never learn how to cook real food in the first place, as they didn't grow up with it.

great selections of comments and points and I have to agree - it is not only the poor who are big !
I will read back over the comments as it is so shocking how this nation is going but dinner just arrived - large donner kebab double chips onion rings and 2 litter of coke. |

Another problem is the minimum wage. Most people can't survive on a thirty-hour contract for only £7.50 an hour so supplement that job with extra work. Its a researched fact that people who work 60 hours a week will snack a lot more and often on the wrong foods. That's okay if its a physical job but what if its not physical?

I believe stress is a big precursor for people putting on weight.

![]() When we have a particularly bad month, its actually quite tempting to buy a bunch of crap as you can fill the cupboards for much less with crap. Have done that sometimes too, but usually the thought of surviving on processed crap is enough to send us begging to family and friends for cash for 'proper' shopping. But if we didn't have people we could lend off, we would have not much choice :S |

Also get a sports bottle and fill it with water.Take it with you all day and drink it.Have a Tea or coffee now and then when you need a boost.Water helps you feel full if you drink plenty.
This stuff isn’t complicated.I quite regularly bulk up and cut down.Just gotta know how much you’re putting in your body. |

I would say it isn't even a case of healthy v unhealthy even people that are attempting to eat healthily are duped into consuming large amounts of sugar just due to the fact the labeling can claim the product is 'low fat' it's totally counterproductive and dangerous.
Everything has sugar in it, even bread it has a hundred different names sucrose, maltose, rice syrup, high fructose corn syrup... it's all sugar. No wonder kids are turning their noses up at veg, their taste buds are tuned into all things sweet, it is literally impossible to avoid it unless you scrutinise everything or cut out ALL processed food. The next biggest problem is hydrogenated fat, (trans fats)this is in anything from a take away, margerine, cakes, biscuits and doughnuts, avoid them on the daily and you've cracked it. Cut down on shop bought ones or make your own if you want to control what goes in your goodies. All food is is common sense if you take in more calories ( unit of energy) than you expend you put on weight. If you take in empty calories with no nutritional value ( cake, pastry, biscuit) you have no energy, meaning you move less (after the initial 5 min sugar rush) and you put on weight. The problem is sugar is very addictive, I really struggle with it and have found myself on more than one occasion pre diabetic....it's easier quitting cigs or booze! Seriously :/

After you’ve weighed out portions for a while it becomes second nature to know roughly how many cals are in things. You can stop weighing and guess more or less how much you’re consuming. If you’re being mindful of portion sizes you’re probably on the right track.Combine that with getting out and walking or training if you’re that way inclined and you’re onto a winner.

![]() We now add sugar to our baby formula (which is causing untold problems) and if you buy a low-fat product its laden in sugar or its so highly processed the body doesn't recognize it as food and so stores it in the liver. A lot of diet food is a complete con and should be avoided.
