Default David Attenborough is a vegetarian

DAVID ATTENBOROUGH LOST HIS APPETITE FOR MEAT DUE TO ‘THE STATE OF THE PLANET’
Vegetarian Sir David Attenborough said mankind must stop eating meat for the good of the planet. The meat industry is a leading cause of climate change.

The deteriorating state of the planet has caused Sir David Attenborough to lose his appetite for meat.

Speaking to Radio Times magazine, the broadcaster and natural historian urged for people to act more responsibly when making choices about food. “Above all, we have to bear one thing in mind – every single mouthful of food and every breath of air we take is dependent on a healthy planet,” he said.

“And the one thing we can all do is to stop waste. Don’t waste food. Don’t waste power. They are precious and we can’t live without them. We are all consumers of these things and we must act responsibly,” the 92-year-old stated, adding that, “perhaps by doing that, we can undo the damage that we’re doing.”

Attenborough’s latest documentary series “Our Planet” showcases the wonders and vulnerabilities of the natural world and above all, “reminds us we’re all on one team,” the series’ trailer says. The Netflix hit made viewers emotional, to say the least, particularly when watching scenes of animals like walruses and flamingo chicks struggling and dying due to environmental problems, like melting ice. Digital Spy said the footage is “capable of both breaking your heart and also warming your soul.”

During the Radio Times interview, Attenborough was questioned about whether people should reduce their meat intake. An increasing amount of research has suggested that meat production is only worsening our planet’s already dismal state. Attenborough replied, “Well, we can’t go on eating meat at the rate we have been.”

The recent interview mirrors similar comments made by the broadcaster late last year. In a video, Attenborough “warned” that “we need to start making serious changes in order to combat climate change,” Sky News reported.

Attenborough commented that those in “the comfortable west” – and especially people in wealthier parts – are often untouched by the effects of global warming, caused by a number of industries including animal agriculture. “We may well say… ‘well it doesn’t really matter whether we go on eating meat, because we’re not affected,’” Attenborough commented.

“But in fact, it does matter because it matters to the whole world. And the first people to feel the consequences are, of course, the poor. Those at the bottom of the heap. Those that are really vulnerable to what is happening in the climate,” he continued. Notably, a study published in October found that those with a lower income were more likely to be concerned about climate change.

“[T]he whole world together should actually act on their behalf,” Attenborough stated. “We have so much knowledge, we have so much skill, we have so much ingenuity. Of course, we can do something about [climate change]. The question is how much. And we ought to set our sights high and go for the best,” Attenborough said in the video. He added that humankind should use its “passion” to get out of “this mess.”

Humans are built to eat meat, we're omnivores... and if people decide not to eat meat, that's their choice and I respect that. And farming welfare has really come on in the last couple of decades in developed countries. But I honestly think we have to tackle plastic first. Walk into your local supermarket and look at all the plastic tubs of sweets piled up for Christmas... And I'd like to know how much plastic will be delivered by Father Christmas. It seems like all toys are made from plastic, when my nieces were little the house was filled to the brim with pink plastic stuff. Enough.

Burning fossil fuels is higher than agricultural emissions.

The founder of greggs has too I'm sad to say I can't do it... I eat chicken and turkey. I disagree that farming practices are better, I've read of intensive farming being rolled out for pigs and cattle where they are penned and fed only. That's not ethical.

It is very hard, meat tastes good. So barbaric though. I hope it does end up dying out in time

it's an issue of personal choice. Fine if he doesn't want to eat meat, but I will never give it up, because I simply don't want to.

Veggies and vegans miss a lot of good stuff, vitamins and minerals. Vegans are particularly prone to eating an unbalanced diet if they're not fully informed. We're supposed to eat meat and dairy... we're built for it and it's good for us.

Like what? B12 is about the only one and alot of the B12 that people get from meat, they only get that because the animals themselves are given B12 supplements in their feed

Ive been a veggie since I was 13 so its just a way of life or me now, but I would never force the issue on other people but there is a lot of cruelty involved in the meat industry, you just cant trust people to follow the ethical rules , some will do anything for a fast turnaround or just for kicks (pardon the pun) I have no problem with meat eating I just don't like the way the animals are treated and killed .There is some really nice veggie food out there now.

Yes, I understand about B12. But what about iron, vitamin D... Where do vegans get their calcium?

I'm not saying no one should be veggie, I respect people who choose to be, and most veggies I know are knowledgeable about food. What is boring is a militant veggie/vegan. We're all free to choose.

Sources of well-absorbed calcium for vegans include calcium-fortified soy milk and juice, calcium-set tofu, soybeans and soynuts, bok choy, broccoli, collards, Chinese cabbage, kale, mustard greens, and okra 1.

Iron :

Legumes: lentils, soybeans, tofu, tempeh, lima beans, black beans, chickpeas.
Grains: quinoa, fortified cereals, brown rice, oatmeal.
Nuts and seeds: pumpkin, squash, pine, pistachio, sunflower, cashews, unhulled sesame.
Vegetables: tomato sauce, Swiss chard, collard greens.

I didn't say you would be lacking these things. It's harder to eat a balanced veggie diet, you have to work at it. And just like meat eaters who don't eat healthily, there will be veggies out there lacking the good stuff.

I watched a programme on TV about young people turning to vegetarianism and veganism and not knowing how to eat a balanced diet, and their parents not knowing either. I think it's a worry... but it's not like it's an underground thing, there's plenty of info around.

Here calcium is added to bread by law, cereals are also fortified and brassicas have tons of iron. Vitimin D is from sunshine so you only have to step outside.

If the population continues to grow unchecked, people will end up eating whatever they can find. That's the real problem... humans are the most destructive force on the planet. And there are far too many of us.
