Default Are celebs treated equally by the media/public

Something I was thinking about after a discussion in another thread.

Do you think celebs/famous people are all treated the same by the media and the public?

Just as an example the way Caroline Flack or Roxanne palette were shown in the media and the publics response compared to say Ant Mcpartlin

My view is that Ant was treated with a little more compassion; there was more talk about his mental health and his alcoholism, there seemed to be more empathy for him. Whereas the immediate knee-jerk reaction after Caroline's arrest was more focused on hoping she wouldn't be let off a domestic violence charge just because she's a woman. As far as I remember, most of the venom towards Ant online was from his ex-wife.

I might have that wrong, but it;s my take on it.

I also cant remember seeing much bad said online at what Ant had done because I remember at the time it just didnt sit right with me, he had broken the law and endangered others, not that I'm saying anyone deserves 'hate'.

I dont think all famous people are treated equally.

As I've said before it seems to take death especially suicide for people to suddenly think, oh no they were treated badly .

But it also depends what their scandal is and who the person is , Caroline was under scrutiny for the domestic abuse thing, Roxanne literally tried to ruin someone's life on TV .

Ant embarrassed himself and put others in danger on the road, but he got help and is doing well and he's popular .

I find it disgusting how Alexandra Burke got treated on strictly yet she did nothing wrong, Cliff Richard & MJ were cleared yet people still call them horrible things .

MJ's death changed nothing and he still gets his reputation tarnished .

.....hmmmmm, I would say that’s a difficult one...I think that it depends on the relationship that a specific media source has with a specific celebrity....and some celebrities are not held in very high regard at all by the media, so that I would say is an influencer on the story slants...

I can't remember how Alexandra Burke was treated...? I thought she was an amazing dancer... and I don't read Twitter or Facebook.

It feels like, the more equality women get, the more it is resented and they have to pay in other ways.

Not a celebrity I know... but I have to say I'm delighted at the responses on here to the female Para who's just passed P Company. Nice to have a really positive story like that. Wish the rest of the Internet looked at it the same.

....females in general are often held up to a higher standard in society than males are...Meghan/Harry is a huge example of that...

I'm not sure it always is, I think it depends on the circumstances and how much that person was liked beforehand. I think if a celebrity is very much liked beforehand then it will take a male celebrity doing a lot more bad things before public opinion turns on them than it would for a female celebrity though.

I'm not naming names ,but the grief Alexandra got for previous "dance experience" was ridiculous . She was never a professional dancer she just starred in musical theatre .

Joe who won that year apparently had more of a dance background, yet he got a pass as he was universally liked alot . Like I said usually double standards BS .

Alexandra also had her personal life and career choices brought into debates and her personality & behaviour. She always got unfairly attacked, Dan wooton was also printing alot of garbage about her .

It's a culture war. Look at the incel movement, tradwives.
The internet gave voice to those opposing progress and equality for women.
Same goes for minorities.
They will not win. But the mischief they create causes issues.

That's not the whole problem of course but a part of it.

...yeah, pretty much my thoughts...with Ant for instance...?...he had such a support from the media and public of being a ‘national treasure’ type beforehand, so that very much allowed him ‘recovery’ as well, it left more scope for it..?..whereas with many celebrities, they’re not held in very high regard from either the public or the media...reality TV celebrities are a good example of that...

tbf Goldheart acting like MJ got unfair and unrealistic backlash is nonsense. Even if you don't believe that he abused young boys, you can't deny he had really weird and inappropriate relationships with them. He's not really a great example of unwarranted attention imo

People's reputations get destroyed , accusations get thrown around and they stick.

2S the point I'm making is a few of us hear a story and we make judgements, we hear Caroline was arrested and the whole domestic violence thing and we form an opinion. Even the people who thought she was violent were still saying "if" as we didn't know the full ins and outs.

I already said after she died that we were not hearing the full story ,and we'll probably never really know what was happening. All we know is her mental health was suffering. But the police being involved , obviously shows things were out of hand.

I've always hated newspapers like the sun , people are confused why her boyfriend and people like Schofield sell stories to papers like that.

i think it very much depends on who the celeb knows and how much power/money/ influence they have. The same as applies in all other aspects of life

For me, the most obvious recent example is prince Andrew ... there are a few minor mutterings, but it would take an earthquake for something to happen to him

Conversely, Meghan and Harry don't have anything like the same power and influence ... need i say more?

Donald Trump gets a few minor mutterings, but his behaviour has been despicable for decades ... not just during his time as president

Minor celebs that haven't built up their power/influence will always be the first to fall

Not sure I agree that Prince Andrew has greater power to stop something happening to him than Harry. He;s stepped down from loads of stuff, and until he clears his name I'm afraid he's going to have to continue to step down.

The media attacked MJ for his voice, body, face , skin & sexuality.

For the millionth time it wasn't just boys he spent time with , that was a dumb narrative pushed to accuse him of being "creepy paedophile with a boy fetishi" which again is offensive . They tried to out him from the closest, even though he clearly liked women.

What I find Bizarre and stupid is how they say nothing about the girls he hung around with, so I guess if people think you're a paedophile it doesn't matter if you spend time with any little girls as apparently you only molest little boys .

Surely if they genuinely thought he was dangerous they wouldn't let ANY kids around him .

That's like saying men were safe around jack the ripper just because he had a thing for killing women . Their logic is flawed.

MJ went about things the wrong way ,but I truly believe he was naive and as he didn't have a proper childhood he was trying to relive that. If he was this "evil monster" people paint Jim as then they'd try and bring him to justice instead of trying to extort money from him.

Macaulay culkin spent a hell of alot of time with him and so did other children and they say nothing happened. They all have happy memories plus his Neverland home was filled with cameras and staff .

He was investigated for 10 years and all clear .
