Used ALL THE TIME by old gamblers trying to make themselves feel better about a loss. It essentially means, if you're "meant" to have something, it'll happen... like Baby Jesus or The Universe makes sure it all goes to plan or something. It normally goes like this:

*lose £200*

"Noooo!! **** sake!! Away tae ****!! Load of absolute PISH!!! ... .... ..... .... .sniffle... .... ...... ahh well..... whit's fur ye'll no go by ye..."


I don't believe in fate and all that nonsense myself but it's a phrase that always made me chuckle.

Or as normal people say "What's for you won't go by you" that's a favourite of my mothers along with "A dumb Priest never gets a Parish" (how Irish catholic is that one)
