Yeah, me too. Did you say Donna was your favourite?
:flutter: Yes.

:flutter: Yes.
I was randomly comparing reactions to the TARDIS during the episode, and remembered her screaming at David Tennant while wearing a wedding dress

I haven't watched Doctor Who since Matt Smith left, thought I'd watch tonight and it's meh. NOTHING on the Rose & Donna days :flutter:

The last episode I watched was the first one with Capaldi and Clara, and I thought that was awful. This one was a lot better—I think she's great so far, and I actually want to watch the next episode. I haven't wanted to do that for a while.
Same here, haven't watched since then but really enjoyed tonight's ep and Bill has definitely helped regain my interest
Don't know if I'm a fan of Matt Lucas's character though, he was okay but can see him getting annoying over numerous episodes
I'm not entirely sure how Moffat thinks that was a good point for new viewers to start watching but I did really enjoy it.
Made me jump loads. Water woman was scary :worry:
Ashley.
15-04-2017, 09:11 PM
Considering the state of the last couple of seasons I thought I'd only last ten minutes watching the episode, but I actually really enjoyed it. Still not the same as it used to be, but a big improvement at least.

Worried about Pearl Mackie yet it's Matt Lucas whose acting is leaving a bit to be desired. :worry:

I'm not gonna lie though, water woman was the most scary thing to come out the show in a while.

Oh, pfft, Daleks, I knew I couldn't love it for too much longer. :bored:
I'm never here for Daleks appearing in episodes where they have no relevance to the plot. It must be to fill some sort of quota and by the looks of things, it's the lasf time we'll see them whilst Moffat is in charge.

I was sort of surprised at the simplicity of the plot given that Steven Moffat wrote the episode... but then I realised that the point of the episode was probably to showcase diversity within the show given that the entire plot was based around a lesbian relationship.

It was probably weaved into the rights back when it relaunched. It's the only possible reason for their random appearances in Waters of Mars and Bill's announcement
Back in 2004, when RTD relaunched Doctor Who, they had trouble getting the rights to the Daleks from Terry Nation's estate. When "Dalek" was written for Series 1, they also had an alternative story ready to go incase they couldn't get the rights. The aliens in the alternative script were later adapted and went on to become the Toclafane in Series 3.
It is a bit silly having to include the Daleks at least once a year. Sometimes they just don't fit! It's nice that they haven't been the central point of the finale episodes for the last couple of years.

“Kris Marshall has already joined the cast and will regenerate at the end of this series, not in the Christmas special,” a source told the Mirror.
According to the paper, the BBC has refused to consider a woman for the lead character, with the source adding: “They won’t risk a woman Doctor. They want a David Tennant type.”

I still feel like Kris is a red herring by the Beeb, getting this leaked *so* early on, and with the negative feedback it's received, would be a complete damp squib.
i liked the first ep, but I agree that the daleks are so boring now, im glad they got their ep out of the way quickly..
It wasn't even a dalek story though, they just had a fleeting appearance like they did in The wedding of River Song. Doesn't look like they're showing up again this series though

16-04-2017, 09:33 PM
I like Kris Marshall, but I feel like his type of Doctor we've already seen enough of. He's a safe choice.
Like Capaldi was a risky choice in the new era where the Doctors are all young, I want them to take a risk again and try something different.
But I wouldn't be surprised if the new Doctor has already been chosen. Moffat said this regeneration would be slightly different.
Given the fact that we're going to see Simm's Master and his future incarnation Missy together, I wouldn't be surprised if the current Doctor also has scenes with his next incarnation.

Weren't they saying the first episode would make it "explicitly clear" that Bill was gay? It felt like the opposite of that to me, the whole episode I was just thinking Bill was a bit of a loner and wanted a best friend in Heather

I thought it was okay, Bill doesn't seem too interesting so far but hopefully that will change and I really aren't that keen on Matt Lucas' character.
The Vault seems like it could be an interesting Season long arc, I'd assume it contains some sort of time device or prison that has the ability to recall old dead enemies which would explain the return of the old Cybermen and John Simms' Master.

Weren't they saying the first episode would make it "explicitly clear" that Bill was gay? It felt like the opposite of that to me, the whole episode I was just thinking Bill was a bit of a loner and wanted a best friend in Heather

Just watched today - quite enjoyed it tbh . Pleasantly surprised. Bill wasn't as bad as I expected and they seem to have improved the Nardole character a bit too... more of a real fleshed out character and less of a caricature. They've made him more quirky / eccentric but clearly not actually stupid... whereas in the previous appearances he was just two dimensional and daft.

But you're fine with the concept of a man who can change all his structural DNA whenever he dies flying around in a blue box throughout time and space?
I understand what you're saying here but for me the element of "suspension of disbelief" is important. Mine can go pretty far, to be fair, I watch a lot of sci-fi that doesn't stand up to scientific scrutiny, BUT I draw the line when it doesn't stand up to plain old logic.
The moon egg episode... I was fine with. Totally fine with. I actually thought it was really good, in fact, and a hugely imaginative concept... but the end ruined it.
Because it left behind another egg, than was exactly the same size as the first egg, as a replacement moon.
So the thing hatched, a newborn space creature, and then left behind an egg the same size as the one it literally just hatched out of. Wut! It laid something the same size as it's entire body. The concept is ridiculous. They should have come up with another explanation like... I dunno... it leaves behind some invisible gravitational force so that the earth doesn't go into chaos, and then the humans replace the moon with some sort of projection or hologram from then on so that people don't panic. Still pretty out there but at least feasible.

Yeah, there were definite issues (I mean, this is the guy who wrote the worst non-series 2 episode of nuWho, so I don't think anyone had particularly high expectations), such as the ending and the fact that Bill seemed to know everything one minute and nothing the next, but as far as character-building episodes between the Doctor and the companion go, it was pretty fun

There were some great ideas and the production value was pretty bloody good. It looked amazing.
As long as Bill's characterisation is a little more consistent than "I was able to figure out the entire future of my planet from a couple of pictures on a slideshow but I couldn't possibly guess what's in these hundreds of cryogenic freezers I'M EVER SO UMBLE I JUST SERVE CHIPS", then I'm optimistic about the rest of the series

Yeah, the majority of science depicted in the show is non existent my love. It's called fiction for a reason.
I have written fiction (You can find some examples on this forum) but there are rules like internal consistency and rules for when you have to do things which as far as we know are impossible, like faster than light travel or in my case shifting between different worlds (Special devices either magic from a world where magic exists or fabricated machines as in our world) I also made use of real high end physics theories, like M-Theory as progression from string theory and the many worlds hypothesis.
That episode of Doctor Who broke them.
The one Sci-Fi show I hear that stuck to real world physics was Stargate-SG1 so it can be done.
It started off really well but it got a bit 'ugh' after the humans woke up and the doctor went on another rant about war etc
should've just let the robots kill them all tbh

Stargate has a couple of minor slips too but, to be fair, considering it ran for a total of 17 seasons (about 400 episodes) over three shows a couple of mis-steps isn't too bad. A sort of jarring one that stands out for me was when they introduced the idea that matter was stored in a buffer as data in each gate and could be retrieved later (in an SG1 episode) though they did keep that constant from then on e.g. The galactic bridge forwarding data from gate to gate in SGA. It wasn't impossible sci-fi BUT it did contradict some of the established lore about how the Stargate worked from before that point, minorly breaking the established rules. Also it should never have introduced time travel into the equation; I feel like that was a major mistake for the franchise, and the supposed science (wormhole intersecting a supernova / black hole I think?) was... Flimsy, to say the least. I also just generally don't think time travel fit well with the tone of the show.
Being fair to Doctor Who, it doesn't actually break its own rules THAT often, however it is very guilty of employing "deus ex machina" and frequently inventing NEW "science" to further the plot. I've even softened my stance on the gender swapping regens, as I'm rewatching old ones at the minute and Matt Smith's Doctor actually mentions another time lord being "a woman a couple of times". I mistakenly thought Missy was the first it was mentioned, but apparently not.
Scarlett.

I wouldn't be too worried. The live ratings have been declining for years and the BBC don't seem to be panicking about it.

(About 2:25 in) Steven Moffat spins this somewhat to make it sound like the BBC keep Doctor Who on air because they love the show- my guess is that it's so profitable, they could lose quite a lot of viewers and it wouldn't make much difference.

Let me stop you there, what you write or what Stargate did is irrelevant.
Doctor Who is a sci-fi fantasy and rarely uses actual real scientific theories. It's also ran for 54 years and constantly broken its own rules.
But I'm sure that's just another reason it's going to be cancelled imminently. You know, they've gone to the trouble of hiring Chris Chibnall so.

It didn't make a huge amount of sense either... Like "Yeah I know they killed your loved ones and also you only have my theory that they'll play nice to go on now so they might still grind you all to bits in your sleep but... Oh well... Sleep tight bye now."

Yeah like it would of been so much better if it ended up being something shady going on. Also making it so they were now living beings was just so stupid to me. Like if they stayed with the whole robots malfunctioning thing, surely it would of made more sense had the doctor just sorted out the problem and they were back to normal but with precaution put in so they can never kill people again. Rather than telling the people "oh they're now living being and will probably attack if they feel threatened" like wtf?
Also off topic but I feel like the show should of ended just before the robots killed the little boy, the show should of just ended on that cliffhanger and there be more to the story next ep.
So that episode was basically Oliver on Ice, yes?
