It's so weird the way Moffatt spoke about him.
"If an actor like Matt Lucas wants to be in your show, you don't turn them down. He could be doing Hollywood movies but he wanted to do Doctor Who."
SO GIVE THE MAN SOMETHING TO DO!!!

Aside from a couple of lines, he's like a Little Britain sketch stumbled onto Doctor Who set for Comic Relief.
At least with Catherine Tate, she moved from her sketch show and portrayed an actual character in Doctor Who. :omgno:

I'm Nardole neutral. I mean, he's not had any major role to play, but at the same time I'm OK with him being along for the ride, he doesn't grate on me or anything. Like Mickey says; "he's the metal dog".
Then again, they even gave Mickey a purpose in the end .
I like Nardole but if I never saw him again I wouldn't be sad

They ALWAYS reveal the new Doctor. If anything it acts as a piece of major promotion ahead of the new series, and will sometimes determine if people will watch or not. I don't agree that they should keep the new actor a secret. I love finding out who the new Doctor will be. I hope they do it in a live show like they did for Capaldi's reveal.

That's a good point, shall do that! Wonder if he'll revamp the logo? It's been seven years since they revealed this one. (With the DW part mind)
Marsh.
01-07-2017, 07:48 PM
Not enough Master. Not enough Missy.
And, as always with companion exits, they tacked just a little too much onto the end and threw in the fact that her death wasn't "permanent".
I wasn't a big fan of Amy, but at least she simply left without fuss, most of the others got about 3 endings. :joker:

01-07-2017, 07:48 PM
David Bradley's role was revealed. They need to keep something secret to keep the show interesting like when they revealed the Master was back even though his whole return was pointless and not really needed.
David Bradley's role was leaked by the press, it's unfortunate I agree but it's what happens in this day and age. Things spread like wildfire quicker than usual.
Marsh.

David Bradley's role was revealed. They need to keep something secret to keep the show interesting like when they revealed the Master was back even though his whole return was pointless and not really needed.
David Bradley's role isn't the same thing. He's playing a Doctor we know and have seen before.
The new doctor is always announced beforehand. I'd like it to be a surprise so we can simply watch him change and be surprised whether it's a well known actor like Capaldi or a brand new face to the business. But they always like to use the new actor/companion and the reveal of who they are/will be as major promotion to get attention prior.
Jarrod
01-07-2017, 07:51 PM
Also, problem is that if you keep a star like David Bradley appearing a secret, you'd get the usual people tuning in. It's a way of getting other viewers interested.
Marsh.

I started to wonder that when we were getting those wide shots of the Tardis and seeing the icons and stuff above the console rotating. They don't really play around enough with the shots in the Tardis as much as I'd like, they've got some good design work in there.
But, anyway, it got me wondering about whether Chibnall will change everything, including the Tardis, like Moffat did. I imagine we'll get a new theme/titles and that could include an updated logo I suppose.

So effectively Bill was turned into a Cybermen, Heather reversed the process, the Doctor is lying dead on the floor and Bill's actual exit is that she's off to get laid?
Marsh.
01-07-2017, 07:56 PM
I don't like that Moffat just effectively tried to murder the Master/Missy though.
Obviously it's left open.
I half expected him to give Missy some regeneration energy to enable her to change and that be part of why his own regeneration is delayed or whatever.
That would've been a better explanation for me (even though it's kind of nonsense) because him simply refusing to change doesn't really do anything (and harkens back to Tennant) but think oh they're dragging it out because they have one more episode to go.
Marsh.
01-07-2017, 07:57 PM
So effectively Bill was turned into a Cybermen, Heather reversed the process, the Doctor is lying dead on the floor and Bill's actual exit is that she's off to get laid?
I don't think it was reversed. Bill Cyberman died and now she's on another plane of existence like Heather.
Although with the small print that Heather can make Bill human again if she so wishes.
So, basically a Clara exit again. She's dead, but she can go off travelling with Ashildr for however long and delay her death.
Marsh.
01-07-2017, 07:58 PM
So, even in the end, Moffat didn't actually have any kind of reason or much use for Matt Lucas.
Kind of makes you question the point of him wanting him in the show so bad when he wasn't going to do or offer much.

I wish they'd have kept to the format of the early episodes, Billy studying under the Doctor at university. It was classic DW but also felt fresh.
The kind of drift in the second half is kind of a Moffat problem.
I'm just gonna say it. Apart from a couple of excellent episodes, that was a pretty dire season.

What's that got to do with it?
Clara/Jenna was pretty unusual in how long she stayed.
Martha only did one series. And it was 99% obvious Bill would only have one series to fill the gap until Chibnall's era anyway.

Marsh.
01-07-2017, 08:26 PM
I think they should explore a male companion
I wouldn't mind them mixing it up but it's hard to say until we know who the new Doctor is.
Personally, I think it's the male/female double act that makes it work. Hence why most of the male companions have been an extension of the female like Rory and Mickey.
If you had two guys leading the show or two females it loses something.
So, if the new Doctor is a woman then go for it.
I think they should explore a male companion
If you want to see the Doctor exploring his male companion then you should probably go and read some slashfic
Marsh.

It just shows how much the quality of Moffat's work changes as in the last week I think I watched "World Enough and Time" about 6 times in total? I can honestly say, apart from a couple of scenes I want to go back and watch just to clarify what on earth was happening, I have no desire to actually re-watch "The Doctor Falls" again.
Given that cliffhanger, the similar one with John Hurt had me excited for the 50th, but it seems the Christmas Special Moffat's going to disappear up his own arse with his smug cleverness again.
We're ready for you Chibbers!!!!

Well I thought that was beautiful- a great end to a great series! I actually loved Bill's ending too, it balanced out a dark episode.
Overall, I really enjoyed this series. It was nothing groundbreaking but I think we needed a lighter series after everything Moffat has thrown at us. I really hope he will stay on to write an occasional episode, as much as I'm looking forward to Chibnall.
Marsh.
01-07-2017, 09:04 PM
From what he's said he's leaving DW completely so won't go back to an occasional episode writer. Like RTD had, I think he's had enough.
Maybe in a few years though.

I don't mind it as much with RTD. For me his strength was the characters and the story arcs. Moffatt struggled with characterisation and barely produced a satisfying arc, but his individual episode ideas are brilliant. e.g. The Silence, Weeping Angels, Clockwork Droids
Scarlett.

I don't get it, but something about the tear of Heather's that dripped onto Bill in episode 1 meant that she too could transform into whatever the hell Heather is and somehow Heather has the ability to make Bill human again if she ever wants to be.
But then, Bill also dripped her tear onto the Doctor so that will probably play a part at Christmas, I wouldn't be surprised if we saw another appearance from her.
Both Matt Lucas and Michelle Gomez had "goodbye" videos on the official youtube channel. They didn't do one for Bill.

Me about Nardole's entire presence and purpose in this season.
The really annoying part is, when they reigned in the "comedy sidekick" bit and had him be a bit more serious he would actually have made a decent character. But they basically did that a bit a couple of times - hinted that there was more to the character - but then abandonned it and went back to him being (allegedly) funny.

Yeah I didn't get that.
I expected more to be revealed about those brief moments he got quite stern with the Doctor.

I don't think they've ever managed to keep anyone famous a secret. Peter Capaldi and David Tennant were prominent names on the rumours lists before they were confirmed.
So. Based on that if it's someone known it's 90% likely to be Kris Marshall. If not, it'll be an unknown like Matt Smith.

14-07-2017, 08:12 PM
If it's a man it'll likely be someone young and attractive but I'm here for it being a woman.
I'd be here for the early rumours being true and Tilda Swinton taking it on, she'd be a one and done Doctor but I'd live for it.
I maintain that Kris Marshall was only rumoured because he happened to quit Death in Paradise at the same time as Peter Capaldi quit, and I'll keep maintaining that even after Kris Marshall is announced as the new Doctor

To be fair, I thought I wouldn't like Smith and still rate him as my fav NuWhu, and I was also convinced I'd dislike Capaldi and have mostly enjoyed his take on the role... So I'm trying not to be skeptical. The character is almost always so well written, and has so much history to build on, that it would take a pretty special effort to completely screw it up... Surely...

Capaldi's my favourite I think, he's the only one out of the four that has developed as a character over the course of his tenure. I think his interpretation is more interesting and there's more of a sense of pathos to what he does.
The material Capaldi's been given hasn't been the best but he's done everything he could with it.
I'm really going to miss Capaldi. I absolutely adored his interpretation and he's the best speech delivering Doctor.

I wish Capaldi was staying. I liked Matt Smith but felt about ready for him to leave, and Tennant's farewell parade of death put me right off Ten for years, but there still feels like so much more that could be done with Twelve, especially when not hampered by Moffat's writing.

I sort of agree with that I think... Smith had what seemed like a full proper "story arc" that came to a conclusion where his journey was done... Tennant actually sort of "lingered on" a bit... But the Capaldoctor (and Missy) arc does feel a bit like it's been cut short? Not sure about another full season but at least a half season to wrap it up might have helped.
Why do they never do that, anyway? Why are regenerations always at the beginning/end of a season /Xmas special? It would be awesome if they just plonked one in unannounced in the middle of an episode :joker:.

With just hours to go before the new Doctor is revealed, Broadchurch actress Jodie Whittaker and Death In Paradise’s Kris Marshall are neck and neck as joint favourites to take the role.
Peter Capaldi hails his Doctor Who successor Jodie Whittaker saying she will be 'fantastic
Jodie – who played Beth Latimer in all three series of the smash hit ITV drama – had previously been only fourth favourite to take over the key to the Tardis, with odds of 25-1 just four days ago.
However now Ladbrokes have said that she is just 6-4 to take over where Peter Capaldi left off, and become the first woman to play the Doctor in a series of the show.
Jodie Whittaker becomes new joint favourite to be the next Doctor ahead of the big reveal
Just who will replace Peter Capaldi? (Picture: BBC)
Of course the fact that Broadchurch’s Chris Chibnall is the new showrunner might just have fuelled speculation that she is involved.
Jodie is now joint favourite with Kris Marshall at 6-4 – who fuelled rumours of his involvement with the role when he abruptly quit BBC One’s Death In Paradise earlier this year.
I haven't seen much of her work, but from the rumoured list of women, I was hoping it'd be her (I mean, who else was there? Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Olivia Colman?)

They've done enough building up to this moment for it to feel pretty natural now, it wouldn't have worked as well if the 11th Doctor was female (though if he was, I don't think it would have been a bad thing once people got used to it), but it feels just right for Number 13 to be female.

You do realise how ridiculous your point is considering the Doctor completely physically transforms at regular intervals to prevent himself from dying.
So comparing it to human characters like James Bond who don't just casually change sex is ABSURD.
Stop trying to apply logic to your sexism, it isn't working.

I had no problem with the idea of a female Doctor and I think Michelle Gomez had a huge part in that. She was so great as the Master she's the one who eased the idea in really for me.
