I am enjoying this season, but the editing has been seriously bad. Like, probably the worst in any Survivor season I've watched. So inconsistent.

I agree, one of my most favourite seasons in a long time... but for the editing.

I think the problem is that being all fan fav's, the characters were to big to fit into the season. People we wanted to see and came to see more of got set aside so they could build their story...but they didn't do a good job of it anyways

I posted this in another thread but it definitely belongs in here so here's what my current thoughts are about the storytelling and the editing (as Joe is confirming that Kelly Wiglesworth was his biggest ally, something we didn't see until last week)

Nah it's not really my thing, I just don't like Cambodia much at all because I find it boring, pointless, and kinda confusing. There's no continuity between episodes at all because character arcs randomly stop and stop and don't carry over from episode to episode. Alliances randomly come about and never get talked about again with little to no explanation, we're just told that X and Y are in an alliance now just because. I think having three different sets of pre-merge tribes made it even more confusing since you pretty much need to have a flow chart in order to keep track of who's been on a tribe with who and who's aligned with you. I think all the strategizing is really boring too. We get no scenes of actual camp life or any character development, just 45 minutes of people moving chess pieces around. It's a really boring story to me, and it's being told in an incredibly poor manner.

The editing has been scarily predictable for the most part this season, it takes all of the fun out of the show. And their tendency to effectively write people out of the show only for them to finally get some airtime and then be voted out really is a big part of the problem

Predictability is kind of an issue when I nearly nailed what happens six minutes into the episode. Previously on Survivor usually makes things pretty obvious, and then there's usually one scene in the first 15 minutes that sets the tone for the boot (Monica and Kimmi's disagreement on the clams, Kelly randomly being a threat, etc.) Maybe some of the specifics are unpredictable, but that's because we only hear from the same ~3 people who are constantly giving confessionals about how they're moving their chess pieces around. I don't view it as a good thing that we never know how Keith is going to vote because that means that we never hear from him at all, except for a throwaway scene.

Like I've been saying, I get why some people like this season because it's jam-packed with strategizing and some people are into that, but I think it's a really boring story that's being told terribly. I just really don't get the point of Spencer. I think he's ridiculously dull and not stimulating whatsoever, even in spite of how much airtime he gets for god knows what reason. He just makes generic "strategy" confessionals such as "If Tony is paranoid that his alliance will backstab him and as a result I survive one more round, that's good for me game!" and like... yes, of course it is? Like, not only is that a ****ing obvious statement, but his delivery is often so bland too.

Are we supposed to like Spencer for being a supposed diabolical super mastermind, even though he never accomplishes anything and just makes states the obvious in monotone confessionals? Are we supposed to like him for being a heroic scrappy underdog, even though he's ALWAYS at the bottom of the totem pole and never wields any power and is so quick to condescend other people for not playing the game and having zero chance of winning? Are we supposed to like him for being (the dread S-word) A True Superfan, even though he was miserable the entire time and didn't seem to be having any fun? I don't get it, but I'd love for someone to explain it to me.

I agree about the editing of this season being bad. Kelly Wiglesworth was the original runner-up in iconic season Borneo which 50 million people watched and the definition of 'second chance' and yet she got a Purple Kelly edit this season. Kimmi and Keith's edits are atrocious too, and it's even worse than usual when you remember the fans voted for them to have a second chance yet they are irrelevant on the show in favour of the 1000th Spencer/Jeremy/Stephen confessional about 'the evolution of the game' or the other gamebotty stuff they talk about

As much as I got annoyed with Stephen for perpetuating all the awful metagame cliches about HIERARCHY and VOTING BLOCS and REVOLUTIONARY GAMEPLAY (this season's gameplay really hasn't been anything revolutionary unless you've only seen maybe the last 4 seasons), I still don't see many similarities between how he acted this time around and how Spencer was/is. He couldn't chop wood, he has the worst running form imaginable, we got an entire segment about his diarrhea, he had like five different weepy meltdowns and they were almost all about Joe, etc. Spencer's just been a boring, tedious vacuum that sucked up a bunch of screentime and did nothing entertaining with it. I just feel like all the episodes this season are so formulaic. Someone finds another HII with little to no effort. The same people (Jeremy, Spencer, Kelley, maybe Tasha on a smaller scale) talk strategy. Someone gives a confessional about how fast the game is moving with a few buzzwords (VOTING BLOCS). Someone mistakenly says that they feel safe. Someone comes up with a crazy idea to switch things up. The person who felt safe is blindsided. Lather, rinse, repeat.

I also don't feel like any of the characters are well-developed at all, which is a huuuuuuuuuge problem for me because if I don't care about the people, I won't care about how crazy the Xth #survivorblindside is or whatever. Jeremy, Spencer, Kelley, and Tasha all have served the same purpose of Main Strategist at one point or another, yet we have nothing to distinguish them as characters. Joe's character exists entirely through other people commenting on how perfect he is (remember the absurd confessionals about how he invented the hammock in episode 2?) Abi-Maria's been painfully UTR since the merge. Kimmi and Keith have been painfully UTR this whole time. I wouldn't consider any of the F8 to be a well-developed character and that's a huge red flag for me.

Well that´s just plain stupid. In a final 3 situation, they are really running out of time.

3 immunity challenges, 3 tribal councils and vote offs, 1-2 reward challenges, 10 member jury questioning and final tribal including some camp life and gaming sequences, confessionals etc. in 90 minutes or 120 minutes hours. Something´s going to have to give.
