There hadn't been such a serious outbreak of star fever in Westminster's sedate precincts since Michael Jackson visited nearly five years ago.


Shilpa Shetty has become used to being mobbed since emerging victorious from incarceration in the Big Brother house.

But even she must have been taken aback by the heroine's welcome she received when she visited another institution riven by rivalry and back-biting.

During a three-hour trip to the House of Commons everyone - from the Prime Minister to visiting schoolchildren - wanted to meet the woman who survived ordeal by Jade, Jo and Danielle.

The Bollywood star had been invited to Westminster by Keith Vaz, the extrovert former Minister who had led Commons protests at the brutish treatment she had endured on the Channel 4 show.

When she arrived - a moment captured on live television - Mr Vaz's nine-year-old daughter Anjali presented traditional Indian garlands to Ms Shetty and her mother Sunanda.

Pursued by camera crews, photographers and reporters from the British and Indian press, the entourage was given a rapid tour of the building by the flamboyant Leicester MP.

At each stage police and the Commons authorities struggled to maintain order and decorum.

First they posed for pictures in New Palace Yard, the courtyard in front of Big Ben before heading for the Commons terrace for a photoshoot with the Thames and Millennium Wheel in the background.

Farcical scenes unfolded as Mr Vaz was told only a small number of journalists could follow the group, an instruction ignored by the press pack.

The frenzy led to a sharp exchange of words with the Deputy Serjeant at Arms, Muir Morton, who told the MP: "You are taking advantage of your position - you aren't supposed to be holding press conferences here."

As Mr Vaz protested that he couldn't stop the press asking questions, Mr Morton warned him he would express his "disappointment" when reporting back to the Speaker.

Ms Shetty was then ushered into the Commons chamber to cast an experienced eye on the weekly exchange of insults between Tony Blair and David Cameron at Prime Minister's Question Time.

Afterwards Mr Blair cleared space in his diary to meet the Big Brother heroine, presenting her with a signed picture of the House of Commons.

Ms Shetty described the Premier as "very very sweet", explaining: "He was very kind and said I carried myself with the utmost dignity.

"He said he was very sad to see what I had had to go through in there [the Big Brother house]. I really needed to thank him personally for all the support he showed me and my country."

Tessa Jowell, the Culture Secretary, also gave her a gift, while the starstruck Labour Party chairman, Hazel Blears, gushed: "You look so glamorous."

Jack Straw, the Leader of the Commons, broke off from presenting plans to reform the House of Lords to have his photograph taken with her.

MPs of all parties were round the table at a lunch in Ms Shetty's honour in the Members' Dining Room, with smoked salmon, chicken and "Shilpa's delight", a selection of desserts prepared by Commons chefs, on the menu.

Because of "security concerns", a press conference planned to take place within the building had to be shifted to the steps outside Portcullis House, opposite Parliament.

Summing up her chaotic day at Westminster, she said: "I thought it would be really boring actually but I really enjoyed it. I was pleasantly surprised."

And asked to summarise the contrast between the Commons and the Big Brother house, she replied: "The main difference is that they were more polite in there and I don't get a chance to stay."

Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty, winner of the "Celebrity Big Brother" show, was today the cynosure of all eyes at the House of Commons where she had a meeting with British Prime Minister Tony Blair and attended a luncheon with leading MPs.
During the seven-minute meeting with Blair, Shilpa thanked him for the support he had extended against racism, of which she was allegedly a victim in the reality TV show.
Blair told Shilpa that he was sorry for what had happened in the show.

The luncheon, organised by Labour MP Keith Vaz, also a NRI leader and a former minister, was attended by several MPs, including Peter Hain, Secretary of State of Northern Ireland. Shilpa also witnessed the Prime Minister's Question Hour.

Asked about her impression of the Question Hour, Shilpa said it was more interesting than she had envisaged.
"It feels great, such an honour. This was what we always saw on the postcards. It's so great just to be here," she said in front of Big Ben and the Palace of Westminster.
"There can't be a bigger honour, so much respect to be bestowed upon me." Answering a question from reporters on whether she had an offer to act with British actor Huge Grant, she said this was only a rumour.





She said she had received several offers but has not reached any agreement on them.
Asked about her future plans, the 31-year-old actress said she can not leave India and Bollywood. Shilpa, who was accompanied by her mother Sunanda and Vaz, said she was keen to return to India at the earliest.

To another question, she said she would contribute part of the money she received as a sequel to her appearance in the "Celebrity Big Brother" show to a foundation she has set up for helping Aids Victims in India.

"Aids is a major disease and India has the second highest number of Aids victims and I would like to create awareness of the plight of Aids victims not only in India but all over the World," she said.

To a question on racism, Shilpa Shetty said her tormentors in the Big Brother house Jade Goody and others were not racists though she was a victim of bullying.

"I believe in Gandhian philosophy and we in India are quite tolerant".

Later Shilpa left for Leicester the parliamentary constituency of Vaz where she will attend in a series of functions.

"They wanted a Bollywood actor. They first approached a couple of other actors. Then, finally, I did it. The next thing I know, when I come out of 'Big Brother' Jazz had signed a huge deal on my behalf with the British newspaper The Sun! How could she? Nobody has the power of attorney to do that.

"I've best PR people and agent in Britain, people who've handled Beatles, Jimi Hendrix and David Beckham. Who are Bobby and Jazz springing into the picture to claim they're my agents? They just want to make a quick buck."

Shilpa accuses Jazz of making a fool of herself on the BBC.

"These are people who've called themselves my friends. They're now shaming my country and me. What will people think? I was saddened by the loose statements Bobby made about my family and my mother in particular. How dare he even think of speaking like that about her? I was very hurt."

The hurt to the family precipitated the legal action.

"I can't take any slander against my family. Hit out at me, not my family. Even the money that I received as the last instalment for 'Big Brother' has gone to Jazz's account. I didn't stop that. I don't know how they can claim that Shilpa duped them. We don't belong to that class of people who deprive others of their rightful money."

Chicken curry has acquired a new drool rule in Great Britain after the dishy Shilpa's experience with the dish on Big Brother.

And she isn't sitting pretty with her recipe. Shilpa has inked a deal to write a cookery book.

Laughs Shilpa, "That's the first thing that I've actually decided to do. There's a massive demand for my cookery book. I want to call it Curry Rules. You know I love cooking. Back home in Mumbai I love to cook for my friends. I cooked every day at the Big Brother house."

Shilpa has sealed a massive deal for the cook book. Also on the anvil is an autobiography. "But before that I'll be writing a book on my experiences with Big Brother."

A dessert has been named after Shilpa. "The menu at the lunch with the British PM Tony Blair was based on my preferences. And the dessert was named Shilpa's Delight after me."

There's also a perfume to be named after Shilpa whose aroma will piggyride Shilpa's new -found fame in Great Britain. "Isn't that something? I can finally spread the fragrance of my fame in a bottle," she giggles.

Shilpa is expected back in India in a week's time. Currently she's busy considering a large number of deals in London.

"But a lot of the so-called information about my deals are just hearsay. There're some very interesting film and tv offers. But I don't know how many of these I want to do. Everyday is choc-a-block with engagements. My life is run by my agent and PR guy right now," she laughs hysterically.

"I'm currently shooting exclusive covers for a whole lot of British magazines. The first week after Big Brother has gone into media interviews and explaing my stand on racism. Channel 4 was really really scared about what I'd say.

If I spoke one word against Big Brother the channel would have had to close down the show. So damage control was my chosen agenda in the first week.

'Big Brother' team for 'Metro' premiere?

Last week, we dropped a hint vis-à-vis UTV’s ambitious plans to give METRO an extensive international release in the wake of Shilpa Shetty’s larger-than-life status in U.K. and Europe. Well, there’s more happening on that front!

To start with, UTV has decided to hold a gala premiere of the film on 10th May, a day before its global release, in London. The crème de la crème of this bustling metropolis are expected to be on the guest-list, which, of course, will be attended by Shilpa and the ensemble cast of the film.

It’s also being said that the BIG BROTHER team -- the reality show that made Shilpa an international celebrity overnight -- will be invited for this mega-event. “Also, we’ve decided to double the print order in U.K. owing to the huge popularity there,” Ram Mirchandani of UTV confirms.

Besides premiering the film in London, UTV has decided to take the film to two prominent film festivals overseas. Watch this space for further developments

First things first, how do you feel?
Wednesday was my first free day. It's snowing here in London. And I'm cosied up with 12 cms of snow. I'm still in a daze. What's going on with my life is more than I can explain. What happened to me in that Big Brother house became an international issue.

How are you holding up as India's new representative abroad?
I'm doing okay. I met the PM Tony Blair last week. I went there to thank him on my country's behalf. It was an embrrassing situation for him. He had to answer questions on racism. It must have been very embarrassing for him.

Was Chicken Curry Served?
Oh yeah! 'Chicken Curry Rules' has become slogan in Great Britain. I drove on Wednesday to Leiscester which is an Indian-dominated area.

I got to know old people from the British Asian community who never watched Big Brother started watching it to see me….Would you believe I haven't seen the entire series of Big Brother.

Do you really believe you were a victim of racism in there?
Initially it was hard for me to tell. In India none of us goes through racist behaviour. All of us are Indians. Once I was in the House lots of things were happening. People who followed the whole series were irked by what they saw.

These are British Asians who have been subjected to this kind of discrimination for years and this was the first time they saw someone they knew and liked standing up against the bullying and racial discrimination they experienced in everyday life. For me to be treated like that was very painful to see.

On reality TV the viewers form a strange bonding with the participants. And it wasn't just the British Asians, it was also the British who were appalled. When I made a statement from in there saying, 'Is this the new Britain' the Britishers didn't want Great Britain to be epitomized by those three girls in there (who bullied me).

Do you feel you were racially discriminated against?
You know if you saw the footage I clearly said, 'It was racist.' I've been working in the Hindi film industry from the age of 17, and I've never been treated like this. I never did anything in the House to hurt them, or to make them feel I was unfriendly.

They had this attitude towards me, and I didn't know where it was coming from. This kind of attitude happens among women who are insecure or jealous. But I was never subjected to this kind of a thing.

Was it a girlie thing carried too far?
There was a groupism, and a divide. So coming back to your question about whether the situation in there was racist, I said it was. I don't like to hold grudges. When I went to the dining room, Big Brother asked me if Jade Goodie's attitude towards me was racist. That's when I realized the gravity of the situation.

I realized the entire Asian communist would be hurt if I used that word. And I had no idea my words were creating a furore across the world. So I revised my earlier opinion, and told all the Indians, Pakistanis and Bangladeshis who were listening that yes it was mean rude, obnoxious and arrogant behaviour. But it wasn't racist behaviour.

Have you forgiven Jade?
Jade Goody did apologize. And I've forgiven her. Anyone who knows me knows I forgive and forget easily. Faroukh Dhony has made a statement that I'm a fake. How dare he?! How dare he take away from the fact that I'm representing my country in Great Britain. A lot of Indians in the UK are very irked by his criticism of me.

So would you invite Jade Goody for your wedding whenever it happens?
(laughs) Jade is just an acquaintance, someone I met as part of my experience at Big Brother. She's neither a friend nor an enemy. We were forced to know one another, and I've moved on. I believe her house has been stoned. She has received death threats.

During a police investigation I was told Jade and the others who behaved badly with me have been treated like criminal offenders. Do I feel sorry for Jade? Of course! I wouldn't wish this on anyone. She's a mother of two. I don't wish bad for anyone. And at the end of the day this was just a game show.

Have you become more socially and politically conscious?
Definitely. When I went to Leicester I couldn't get out of the car. It wasn't mock-hysteria. There was a feeling of pride in every Indian there. It made me cry. Actually the enormity of what has happened has just sunk in.

But believe me I wanted to speak to the Indian press at the first given opportunity. At the meeting with the British PM at the House Of Commons I walked across to the Indian press corps, though the British press resented this.

But they had me for a week-and-half. My own country and cinema will always mean more to me. Yes, I feel I haven't really got my due as an actress in Hindi cinema.

So why don't you stand for the elections as an Indian MP in Britain?
No way! You know I'm totally apolitical.

Shilpa Shetty suddenly decided to return to Mumbai. "It was a totally impromptu decision. In fact I decided to return home an hour before taking off from London. I had to come home, even if it was only for a while.

I had some days off in London, and a close friend was was flying back from London to Mumbai. I flew down with him on his private plane. The decision to come down here was very sudden. I was very very homesick, yaar!. So here I am."

At Siddhi Vinayak temple on Saturday Shilpa had to face a mob of onlookers. "God! It was pandemonium. And I do mean God," she laughs her characteristically frank laughter.

Back in London, there was an uncommon happening at the House Of Commons. Shilpa's euphoria after meeting British PM Tony Blair lingers.

"You know in the midst of all the press interviews suddenly this one guy piped in, 'Can I marry you? I think he was Asian, though a lot of Brits are also showing keen interest,"she giggles.

Shilpa is flooded with marriage proposals. "It's such feeling of pride for me as an Indian to be called out by name by on the streets of London. My mom had predicted that one day I'd be world-famous. Of course all Bollywood actors are famous across the world. But this?! I don't believe it. I feel proud that an Indian is being given so much love and respect."

Shilpa's mom Sunanda Shetty has no intentions of finding a groom in Britain for her daughter.

"Where do these things come from? Knowing my mom, do you think she's ever make a loose statement like that? My mom has better things to do than look for a groom for me. And right now marriage is the last thing on my mind."

Speaking of shaadi, British PM Tony Blair made it a point to watch Shilpa in her Salman-starrer Shaadi Kar Ke Phans Gaya.

Giggles Shilpa, "He said he saw my movie on Sky TV. That they showed an Indian television on Sky TV has never happened in the history of Great Britain. Mr Blair said he was channel surfing when he came across this movie of mine. And he watched it!"

A widely-quoted interview from a British paper has Shilpa quoted as saying she's in love with a married man who has two children.

"Why would I say such a thing to anyone? I'd love to know who this 'friend' of mine is. I wonder why anyone would want to contrive a man in my life? I'm very sadly single."

Shilpa turns down part in EastEnders

Celebrity Big Brother winner Shilpa Shetty has confirmed that she will not be joining top British soap EastEnders.

The Bollywood actress was approached by the BBC, who produce the most watched television programme in the UK, for a 1 year deal to play a love interest for bad boy Phil Mitchell. Shilpa's character would have also been the elder sister of current Indian character Preeti. She would have ben joined in the soap by a further 3 Indian characters to make up a new family, who would move into the old Pauline Fowler house.

One of the reasons as to why Shilpa turned down the part was that it would have tied her up for the forseeable future, and it would have been difficult for her to work in movies, which she intends do very soon.

SHILPA BANNED FROM SEEING SICK JO

CELEBRITY Big Brother winner Shilpa Shetty has been dealt a bitter blow – she’s been barred from seeing troubled housemate Jo O’Meara.

Jo’s family fear that if the pair meet, it will push the fragile girl – who has stopped eating and already talked of suicide – over the edge.

Bollywood actress Shilpa, who was the target of racist bullies during the Channel 4 show, wanted to offer an olive branch to the former S Club singer.

Troubled Jo, 27, was among a gang of girls in the BB house accused of cruelly taunting and bullying the Indian actress – sparking a huge backlash from viewers and a global outrage which saw Jo become a hate figure and receive death threats.

It led the blonde chart-topper to sink into a deep depression, feeling her life and career are in tatters.

Big-hearted Shilpa, 31, has said she is prepared to forgive Jo for her antics and wants to meet her in the hope she can help her get back on her feet – but she has hit a brick wall.

Almost three weeks after Celeb BB ended, the film beauty has not been able to see Jo or even get a message to her.

Her family have slapped a ban on anyone from the TV show coming near her – because they are worried any such meetings will cause Jo to have a complete nervous breakdown.

The singer is too scared to go back to her home in Essex and has been holed up in a hideaway hotel since eviction.

She is on prescription drugs to try to beat her depression and only a small number of people have been allowed to see her – none of them CBB stars – for fear of triggering all the bad memories and experiences from the show.

Last night Shilpa – who has forgiven Jo for mimicking her Indian accent and joking that all Indians are thin because they get ill from eating undercooked food – issued a plea for Jo to get in touch. Her spokesman said: “Shilpa has not been able to speak to Jo and we would urge her to get in touch as soon as possible. Shilpa would really like to see her before she flies back to India next week.

“She wants Jo to know the door is open for her and she wants to help get her sorted and put all this behind her. So we want her to give us a call.”

Shilpa is not the only BB pal who has not been able to get near Jo.

Cleo Rocos, Ian “H” Watkins and Danielle Lloyd – who have all been worried sick about her after word leaked that she had been suicidal – have been unable to contact her.

A spokesman for Danielle, 23, said: “She is very concerned for Jo but she has not been able to reach her.”

And 30-year-old Ian’s agent added: “He had a mobile phone number for her but it is no longer working.

“It has not been possible to get hold of her.”

Pal Cleo, 44, revealed she is also having trouble getting a message to Jo, who she called her “soulmate”.

It appears the only people who are allowed to see Jo are her mum, a handful of family members and a close friend.

A family source said: “Jo is still very fragile and we think she needs to get herself sorted before she sees anyone from that dreaded show.

“We’re worried that if she meets up with Cleo or Shilpa or Dani in her current state it might trigger all the bad memories again and set her back – even though they are her friends.

“They know that Cleo, Dani, Ian and Shilpa mean well, but at the moment think it is best for her not to see them.

“She has been made aware that they have sent their love and want to see her.”

"Shilpa Shetty will soon launch a perfume in her name in the UK, after which she will begin writing her cookery book," informed her spokesperson and publicist Dale Bhagwagar at a press meet in Kolkata this week.

The actress who flew down to Mumbai for four days after the 'Big Brother' win, is back in UK to honour commitments, he informed. "Shilpa dropped in as she was feeling homesick. She was missing Mumbai and her dad, so she hopped on a private jet as soon as she got some time to spare. But now, she will only return after a week," informed Bhagwagar.

Refusing to reveal her exact travel plans and movements, he said, "they have been kept a secret due to security reasons."

On returning to Mumbai, Shilpa will complete her shooting for Anurag Basu's 'Metro' and Anil Sharma's 'Apne' and simultaneously take a call on the various film offers that have come her way after her international fame. "Its going to be a balancing act between Bollywood and the West. Her journey from actress to diva has begun," Bhagwagar added.

On NDTV 24x7’s Walk the Talk, she spoke to The Indian Express Editor-in-Chief Shekhar Gupta about how she kept her Indian-ness on the show, why she’s forgiven Goody, and how she’s handling all the new-found attention

Hello and welcome to Walk the Talk. I’m Shekhar Gupta, at Hyde Park in London, with this week’s guest — a celebrity to tens and millions of people, not just in India but all over Britain. It’s very difficult to keep crowds away from Shilpa Shetty now
Yes, it is a beautiful feeling that now I am recognised in different countries. To be recognised in your country is one thing. And not just by fellow Indians or Pakistanis. It is strange. It seemed weird, actually, the first day — people know me by my name, my surname. It is strange to hear your name from people you don’t even know!

Tell us about how this new celebrity-hood came, and how you are coping with it now! You have been a celebrity, but this is different...
I’ve been an actor for 14 years and got recognized by people. I’ve even done shows here and been recognised by people here. We always do shows abroad. I’ve seen and known crowds shouting out my name and all, but this is a new level!

Because there has never ever been an Indian who’s been mobbed like you have been mobbed here.
Yeah, that has never happened. And I take it as a huge compliment

And when did you realise it was this big!
After I got out of the house. I think it became so big because Big Brother is huge here. But it never got escalated to this level. It became so big because of the whole issue that it raked up. The issue of racism is, I guess, a hundred-fold more inflated than the Hindu-Muslim issue in our country. So, may be, if you had a Muslim inmate treated badly in the Big Boss house in India, it would have been bad, but it wouldn’t have raked the kind of chaos that it did all around the world. But, in this country it is so much the culture.

But I can tell you that in India we would have been more sensitive. We have all learnt from our movies that when a person from a majority deals with a person of the minority community, usually people tend to be even more respectful, address the other person as bhai... Maybe some of what happened to you here would not have happened to somebody from a minority in the Indian Big Brother.
Maybe not. But all are so hypocritical, and nobody would have imagined something like that would happen to me! I was prepared for, maybe, a culture shock... Yes, I knew that people in the House would not quite understand my language, in terms of my accent. But I did not think it would be more than that. And a lot of other things we had to make adjustments with. When it started I didn’t understand their language. I didn’t understand the tone in which they spoke, especially Jade. And you know we are Indian, we are brought up so differently. And every time I would say ‘please’, ‘pardon me’, ‘thank you’, or ‘sorry’, they thought “Ugh, she is so fake!” But that’s the way I am, and that’s the way all of us are. That’s how we are brought up in India.

You were being polite and nice when they thought you were fake. Like how?
I don’t know. Like Jade kept thinking that I was not genuine, because I would be polite all the time. I was just being myself. You know after a point they made me feel that I was “un-cool”, as if I was not with it because I was not burping. They used to have burping matches in the house. And I was like, “What’s happening!” And there was no beer in the house! We were all forced to be in that environment and we were forced to bond. Maybe in the outside world, if you don’t get along with someone, you don’t talk to the person.

When did it begin to hurt first?
It did not really hurt me in that sense. I think people were more hurt watching me there. And I think they were more hurt because I would be very stoic about it. I would not really say too much. So, I think that is one thing that hurt them.

I think it was a little bit of Gandhigiri there, was it?
I don’t know about Gandhigiri, I think I have in me to forgive and forget

So tell me when did you first think this was a rude thing!
It happened slowly and steadily. And you haven’t really seen the series, so I can’t explain it to you. And most of the people in India have not seen it. So people wouldn’t really understand the anonymity of it all because one has to watch the whole series to know that. We in India do not even understand the real meaning of racism! At least I have never ever experienced anything like that. In India you are never really treated with racial discrimination. It’s such a huge word! But here, a lot of people have gone through it! They have gone through a lot of racial bullying.

But can you recount it for me?
Shekhar, I guess it is common amongst women to get jealous and be insecure, and I knew that they were insecure with me! And Jamaine, my housemate who really bonded with me, said, “Don’t get down to their level, just be yourself and go with it.” And every step on the way I kept asking him if I was doing anything wrong. Because the reaction I kept getting from them was really strange. Actually, it started out really well, and then Jade entered three days later, and she was supposed to be the surprise element in the Big Brother house. And when she came in, I had no idea who she was. I was just told by my fellow housemates that Jade Goody is someone who is very impressive, and she was also on a previous Big Brother show. So that was all in my sub-conscious mind. And she was very nice with me in the beginning, and then suddenly, after her mother went out, she started getting really nasty with me, may be because she felt that I was taking over the kitchen. But I don’t know why she felt that way. In fact I was the only one who could cook. And I cooked out of choice, and also because I cared for other people. I just didn’t go and cook for myself, I did it for everybody. Because it is rude to just cook and eat on your own.

Did that lead to jealousy?
Yes, I think that is what led to jealousy. But I never really understood it. And I would have just let it be. But then, there was one row that actually blew it out of proportion. What she said was very un-called for!

What did she say, and how did it happen?
Well, it was over the most silly thing. For us, it may look really juvenile, but in that House it was our world, and we were made to do various tasks so that we could earn our food. And we had failed one task, which meant that we were living on two pounds a day and we had very little food to eat. And when you are hungry, you are made to do very stupid things. And we are all celebrities who live luxurious lives with all the comfort and then you come to this house and you are fighting for food. It was strange, because in adverse situations like that your true character comes out. And I think she was upset about one thing. And then one thing led to another. Then she got really nasty.

Recount the nasty conversation for me!
She said things like, “You are no princess, come down to earth.” She started screaming. She thought she was making great TV. She thought her fights with me would be interesting to watch. To have two women fight, but I wasn’t fighting back. And it really didn’t work in her favour.

In a way she made great TV, except that someone else became the star!
I don’t think she quite intended it that way. I was never really there to make great TV. I did it because it was a new challenge for me. I did it because it was a great opportunity, and it was serious money! It was a very lucrative offer for me! I am not apologetic about it because I got paid very well. I am in the business of entertainment. I don’t know why people say she wasn’t there to represent the country; she was there to make money! I was shocked, because that’s what hurts me more than anything else. It’s my business, yes, and I am there to make my money. But I am sorry, my honour and integrity is not up for sale! I have never made money at someone else’s cost! And I was very clear when I was going on Celebrity Big Brother that I will do this much, but I would not do that! There were points in my contract which said I wouldn’t wear a bikini, or I would not kiss anyone in the house, I would not do anything to bring down my name and self-respect, I would not do anything un-Indian. This was one of the clauses! Now if someone says she is not representing her country it hurts me. How can you take that away from me? I am Indian!

Was there a moment when you lost your cool?
Yeah, once when she spoke to me with a lot of disrespect. And she was very condescending as well. I never had anybody speak to me like that. I have been in the movie business for 14 years and I have always been pampered and taken care of. And people have always treated you with a lot of respect. But here, someone was just screaming at me for no rhyme or reason. And I knew I hadn’t done anything wrong. It’s not that I couldn’t, but I wouldn’t. That’s not me!

And then, when did you realise it had become such a big thing? You got Priyaranjan Dasmunsi, Anand Sharma, and Tony Blair so exercised!
All that I got to know once I came out of the house. The way it goes here — the moment you get out of the house, the first thing they tell you is what has been happening you were not even aware of. I was shown clippings of effigies being burnt in our country. And it just scared me! I had no clue then whatsoever! I didn’t know it had blown up to be something so big. And then I was made to meet a psychologist. He thought I was mentally scarred for life. It’s just such a dumb thing that before you go on to a show like this, they make you meet a psychologist, ask you questions even before you go into the house. Like how you are going to deal with situations. And in India if you visit a shrink, there sure has to be something wrong with you! And I was averse to the whole idea! And when he met me even before going to the house, he said, “You really don’t need me! You look just fine!” But, when I got out, he was really weary, because he must have been aware of the goings on while I was in the House. And he showed me the various paper cuttings from all over the world. When he showed me I was on the cover of New York Times, that I was in the headlines in this country for 15 days, it just scared me! And that’s when it started sinking into me slowly and steadily. He told me that Jade had death threats and that they’ve been pelting stones at her house. It just saddened me on one level!

Are you angry with her?
Not at all! I think she has already been through more than her share of punishment. If you go and see the way people react today, it is sad because she used to be a huge celebrity here. And then her perfumes were taken off the shelves, and she fears for her life, her children. It’s not worth it, it’s just a show!

What would you say to her now? You’ll forgive her, love her?
I’ve already forgiven her. I have moved on.

The Government of India wants her to come to India and see things for herself!
Does the Government of India really want that? Well, I’ll be more than happy if she comes to India, and I would invite her to my place. But I am not a PR tool for anybody. If you show interest in my country for the right reasons, I will do it. I really have nothing against her, but what she did was wrong.

Was it racist?
No, not according to me! Racist for me would be someone who would say things with real intent because of your colour. And I don’t really think Jade did that.

Were you told things that were said to you because you were Indian? You know a lot of stuff that people got agitated about was said behind my back. I was never told those things directly.

You only heard about that once you came out?
Once I came out of the house, on the second day, I was played a few of those clippings. But I guess it just stemmed out of jealousy and a lot of insecurity. And I guess they were really stupid! They were really not an intelligent lot! Not that I am, but it’s just that they are so ignorant. What can I possibly say to a girl who doesn’t know the meaning of ‘attire’? I am coming back soon. I have to finish Metro, that’s my next movie, a UTV production directed by Anurag Basu. It was actually because of them that I could take up the Big Brother offer. They had to delay the film for some time. But I guess this has all worked out in their favour, because now suddenly they are going to do a premiere here, and that is going to work now! And anything that works for the film works for me.

Life changed entirely, isn’t it?
Life has changed a complete 360 degrees. I am very grateful to God actually. I always knew that I was God’s special child. When I came to India, the funniest thing that I saw was a photo of me at Siddhivinayak (temple), and it read “Here Shilpa with Bigger Brother.” There is only God who can make or break you, and I believe that! The reason behind my making has been God! It was not me, it was not Jade, it was just divine intervention!

Los Angeles, CA (BANG) - Britain's Princes William and Harry have invited "Celebrity Big Brother" winner Shilpa Shetty to be guest of honor at the Princess Diana memorial concert.

The brothers reportedly think the Bollywood actress would make an ideal guest for the event in honor of their late mother, who died in a tragic Paris car crash ten years ago.

An insider told Britain's Daily Star newspaper,"William and Harry thought Shilpa was amazing in 'Celebrity Big Brother' and very much hope she will take part in the big day."

If the Indian stunner takes up William, 24, and 22-year-old Harry's offer she will join a host of other celebrities, including Elton John and Duran Duran, at the Wembley Stadium concert on July 1.

31-year-old Shilpa won the reality TV contest with 63 per cent of the public vote after she became the center of an international racist bullying argument following disagreements with fellow housemates Jade Goody, Jo O'Meara and Danielle Lloyd.

The actress - also an HIV/AIDS activist, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) supporter and model in her native India - has been offered various television deals since her 'Celebrity Big Brother' victory.

Mumbai - Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty said on Saturday she would not move to Britain after winning reality television show Big Brother.

"I am here to complete my film at this juncture and let me tell you all that I am not shifting base from Mumbai to London," Shetty said at her first news conference in India after the win.

"It is just that I will have to travel all across the world to do different projects."

Shetty resumed her Bollywood career on Saturday with a shoot for Metro, a film about relationships in urban Indian trains.

The actress said her new international celebrity status had not changed her.

"I am the same person even today. The only difference is that I am known all over the world today because of Big Brother," she said.

Shetty, who grabbed the prize January 28 after being subjected to alleged racist bullying during the show, has acted in nearly 50 films alongside top stars such as Shahrukh Khan, but has only a handful of hits.

She returned to Mumbai on February 10, and plans to publish a cookery book.

MUMBAI: After winning British reality TV show Celebrity Big Brother , Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty has really hit the bull's eye. She's now all set to speak on racial discrimination at the Commonwealth Day in London March 12.

"Yes, I'll speak at the Commonwealth Day. Only four people will be giving a speech ... And I'm one of them. It's freaking me out. This year the theme is 'Respecting Differences and Promoting Understanding'. It is about racism. And it's an issue that I'm now associated with. I better deliver. I'll be sharing the platform with world leaders and the Queen," Shilpa said.

She has hired an expert to help her write the speech.

"It has to be five minutes of no beating around the bush. I feel extremely nervous but also very honoured to be representing my country at such a prestigious event."

Back home for a fortnight, Shilpa has no time for her family. "I had a calendar launch. Then I had to attend the Filmfare awards."

Shilpa's wardrobe designers are going ballistic trying to keep up with their star-client's social schedules.

"Luckily I've two dear designer friends and they keep me well dressed wherever I go after Big Brother . Neeta Lulla had done my dress for the event at the House of Commons, and Tarun Tahiliani designed my clothes for Big Brother !

"Neeta and Tarun are being driven up the wall by my demands. I'm sure they dread my midnight calls from London, asking for a dress overnight. They must be fed up of couriering me clothes to London."

Of course, once in a while Shilpa is persuaded to wear international designers.

"For an occasion in London, Vivien Westwood dressed me from head to toe. Otherwise, it's Neeta and Tarun all the way for me."

Shilpa cracks up. "The funny thing is, I went to London with two bags and came back with seven in just 50 days."

Thanks to Shilpa, the image of the Bollywood heroine abroad has changed. "That's true," she conceded. "Earlier they were seen as voluptuous. Now they look at me and wonder at how thin I am and how clued in I am to global fashion trends. I can discuss Armani as well as Tarun and Neeta."

New Delhi: Amidst much speculation about international film offers pouring in for actress Shilpa Shetty after her win in the UK reality show Celebrity Big Brother, she finally admitted to it but was tight-lipped about which ones she had accepted.


“I will not announce anything unless it is worked out," PTI quoted Shilpa as saying on her return from Britain at a function organised by Romanov Vodka, for which she is a brand ambassador.


Reports say Shilpa has now been offered a lead role in the West End musical Chicago but she is yet to take a decision on the matter, her spokesman said on Friday.

"Shilpa Shetty was invited to see the musical on Tuesday and she has enjoyed it and its producers have offered her one of the main roles in the musical but she is yet to decide," the spokesman Farhat Hussain said.

Producers of the show have been holding talks with Shilpa's representatives over a deal for her to play the murderous Roxie Hart, played in recent years by Ashlee Simpson, Denise van Outen and Claire Sweeney.


The people's positive reaction was overwhelming, Shilpa said. The television show may have helped boost her career but she insisted she did not do the show to promote my career in Bollywood.

Big Brother winner may star in new movie set in Yorkshire

BOLLYWOOD actress Shilpa Shetty who shot to world-wide fame over the Big Brother race row could star in a Yorkshire-based film.
The 31-year-old's first film since she left the Channel 4 reality show could be a title by Yorkshire production company, Talking Lense.
Allegations of racism and bullying against Shetty in Big Brother led to hundreds of complaints and sparked outcry in India.
Since winning the show, there has been talk of lucrative movie offers and the Yorkshire Post can reveal her publicist Max Clifford is currently in talks with Yorkshire director Razza Mallal for the film – Quick Slip me a Bride.
The movie, which will be shown at film festivals, including Cannes, will be shot at prominent locations in the region including Ilkley Moors, the North York Moors and the Mumtaz Restaurant in Bradford as well as a church in Wakefield and streets in Huddersfield and Batley.
The story follows the son of a Catholic priest who must marry within 30 days or become a priest, as his father wishes. In a bid to avoid priesthood the youngster decides to have an arranged marriage and meets a disgraced Bollywood dancer who has arrived from India.
The movie will be launched at the International Indian Film Academy awards in June, which will see scores of Bollywood stars descend on the region. Other Bollywood A-list celebrities starring in the film include Anupam Kher and Goodness Gracious Me actor Kulvinder Ghir.
Screen Yorkshire has been inundated with inquiries from Indian film-makers following the IIFA announcement.
Yorkshire-born Mr Mallal chose to shoot the film in Yorkshire instead of South Africa because of the rich locations and to pump
investment back in to the region.
Indian film directors have also been exploring the region's scenic hot-spots. Sheffield-born location scout Kayleigh Cruickshank, 21, has been the guide of Indian production company Image Creators, to landmarks such as the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Wakefield, Harewood House, Leeds and Castle Howard, York, and the Yorkshire Dales. A shortlist of locations will be drawn up for the filming of Aa Lautke Aaja Mere Meeth throughout May, which includes many Bollywood dance scenes.
Former footballer turned actor Stephen Nicholas, 28, has also started working on a Bollywood film, Goal.
The Sheffield actor made his debut in the David Beckham film Goal! and will work alongside Bollywood star John Abraham, who plays an Indian footballer.
He dreams of playing for Chelsea and joins Bradford City en route, where he comes up against Mr Nicholas, playing a racist striker.

Jade Goody visits Indian capital

Big Brother contestant Jade Goody has arrived in India on what she describes as a private visit.
Ms Goody faced accusations of racism towards Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty when they took part in Channel Four show Celebrity Big Brother in January.

Ms Goody denied being racist but apologised for referring to Ms Shetty as "Shilpa Poppadom" and other remarks.

The controversy made front-page news in India but reaction among ordinary Indians to the row was generally muted.

'Very tired'

Hours after her arrival in India, Ms Goody was spotted having lunch at a restaurant in the five-star Le Meridien hotel in the capital, Delhi.


Ms Shetty on her visit to the Houses of Parliament earlier in February

She was accompanied by three people, including two British Asians one of whom told the BBC that they had "only just arrived and were very tired".

A BBC correspondent in Delhi says that Goody sat quietly tucking into a plate of masala dosa under the watchful gaze of a security guard.

When the group emerged from the restaurant they ran into a media scrum and had to literally fight their way through the crowd of journalists.

"I'm here on a private visit, that's really all I can say at the moment," Goody told the BBC.

"But I've been made to feel very welcome so yes, it's been very good so far."

It is not clear how long she intends to stay or what she will do during her visit.

The way that Goody and some of the other Big Brother contestants treated Ms Shetty resulted in more than 40,000 people complaining to the UK media regulator, Ofcom.

On leaving the Big Brother house, the 25-year-old said her behaviour was "nasty" adding: "I'm not racist, but I can see why it has had the impact it's had."

Shilpa Shetty was almost unheard of in the UK outside the British Asian community before she entered the Big Brother competition.

She soon became a household name. After she won the contest she was invited to visit the Houses of Parliament and to take tea with Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Well its a 3 day event called Zee Carnival. Its like a huge asian mela, but non asians are welcome too. They have food, fashion, celebs, henna artists and other business get-ups present too. Ian went as Shilpas' speacial guest of honour. Im so happy that there friendship is still on-going.

Did you listen to Ians' chit chat with Nikki Bedi? It was very informative, i'd say

Well ok. He talked about how he took Shilpa shopping a couple of days after CBB finished. He talked about how Shilpa can't properly sing but that she has a sweet voice. He also mentioned during that interview how Shilpa was going back to India and thet he will be seeing her before she goes off later that day. He has a trip planned to India in a couple of months, so he'll be hooking up with Shilpa. Also that he is Shilpas's guest of honour at the IIFA.
And when he was at the ZEE CARNIVAL, he met Raghav, who gave his e-mail address to him, and then Ian joked and said, he only gave it because he fancied Shilpa :joker: otherwise he wouldn't have bothered.

One of Shilpa's happiest memories from Big Brother is her friendship with Jermaine Jackson.

"And guess what?" she squeals in delight. "Michael Jackson saw us on Big Brother. I told Jermaine to go home and just let me hear his voice."

Back home Shilpa is over-joyed to meet up with her sister. "Shamita was shooting in Hyderbad. I borrowed her from her co-star Madhavan. I hadn't spent any time with my sister in almost two months!"

Shilpa is very hurt by attempts to attack her family in Indian and British press. "Please don't run down my family. They accused us of not paying workers at our factory. My father has worked so hard to keep that factory going. The workers love him. I don't care what they write about me. But why target my family? My father is 67. Spare him.

My parents have gone through so much on my account. They were worried while I was doing Big Brother. I had the choice of getting out. And I was tempted to do so for my family's sake. But I didn't want to be a loser. Honestly it wasn't easy in there.

And when people out here see the full footage it'll anger them. What kept me going was the belief that I'd be out of there in three weeks. But there were fun moments "

As for Shamita's unbecoming picture appearing in a tabloid, Shilpa sighs, "Everyone makes mistakes. Publishing her picture was a very mean thing to do. The difference between us and the West is that we've some ingrained values and we draw a line of decency in public. No point in aping the West. We should never lose our intrinsic values."

Comparisons with Rakhi Sawant who appeared on Big Boss were also hurtful. "Sorry, but with due respects, Big Brother is a hundred notches higher than Bigg Boss.

Honestly Big Brother this time was one of the most decent seasons. I was very clear that I was going to do nothing indecent. It's the non-celebrity Big Brother that's pretty obnoxious. There was no nudity or anything obnoxious in my show."

A couple of Bollywood actresses came forward to claim they had been offered Big Brother. "It was their choice if they didn't do it. I took up Big Brother because they paid me my money and stuck to the clauses in our contact. In a way I feel television is my true calling. Of course I'm known as a film actress. And I'm proud of that label."

"I never knew it would become so big. They were writing all kinds of things about me. If I wasn't Shilpa Shetty I'd actually believe what's written about. They're now trying to dig up supposedly unsavoury details about me.

Out there they're so used to celebrities who are abnormal and dysfunctional. They're incredulous that I'm so normal. I'm very happy wuth the way things are going. The media over there works very differently from the way it's over here. "

Shilpa has been getting feedback from places as far-flung as Barbados and Romania. "Yes it was the racism issue that has made it so big. People in India wouldn't understand the nerves that my situation at Big Brother touched among Asians abroad who've been through discrimination."

According to the Western press not since Gandhiji has the third-world risen in one voice to protest against racial discrimination as they did for Shilpa. "Asians from India and Pakistan and Bangladesh rose up to protest against my discrimination. That's been my biggest achievement.

People at home have been very welcoming. All I'm requesting is, please don't write irresponsibly about me. If I don't get respect at home how can I get it abroad? Don't write well about me. But please don't run down my parents."

Marital dreams? "I want to settle down. But I need a man first. I'm sure God has great plans in that department too. Just look at what He planned for me this year!"

Bullied Big Brother winner Shilpa Shetty has been offered a warm welcome in the Valleys.

Rhondda-born ex-Steps star H, who befriended the Bollywood film star in side the Channel 4 house, has said he wants to bring her to South Wales to meet his parents.

And people in the South Wales said they would show the 31-year-old Indian actress, who suffered abuse from Jade Goody in the reality TV show, how welcoming the Valleys were.

Chris Jones, owner of Petals florist in High Street, Treorchy, said: 'I don't watch Big Brother but I know about the racial controversy surrounding it. I think people would like Shilpa to visit.

'I'm sure people would welcome her to the Rhondda with open arms. She seems a very nice person and people love a celebrity.'

Cara Morgan, 31, who owns a bakery store in Treorchy and went to school and college with H, said: 'Shilpa would get a good welcome.


'From my experience, I really don't see a lot of racial discrimination around here to be honest. A lot of people know Ian and respect him, so I think they would respect anybody he is in contact with.'

^ Well neither did any of us. But Ian was Shilpas guest of honour at the Zee Carnival, he is also going to India in a couple of months. They also spent Valentines day together :thumbs2: And for the IIFA cermony in Yorkshire he is again going as Shilpas' guest of honour.
