Does he think that will shame the PM into resigning? No chance, he can resign for me, seems they're lining Rayner up anyway.
No she said if Starmer Goes
she will as well.

Civil service are a very easy target these days, all the problems in the world could apparently be solved by stopping them working from home or cutting their workforce. Doesn't seem like a great time to be cutting back when we're still in the midst of massive government challenges over Brexit, Ukraine and the Covid recovery
there is massive wastage across the civil service and the jobs will likely disappear naturally over time rather than being compulsory. There are for example, still 70 civil servants working on the COP conference last year, that is just pure waste

Are they Brexit related roles if they were created after 2016?
See how much we could have saved remaining..
Brexit and Covid mainly I think
I'm a bit bitter because I only joined the civil service three months ago and one of the main attractions was job security :joker:

I've worked with Local Government for years - during numerous restructures and they will offer you re-deployment I'm sure. The ones who go will usually those who take VER and VR with long service as the pay off is usually pretty good. They rarely make mandatory redundancies - they will get rid of tons of agency staff and then re-deploy many whose roles are gone but who want to stay on. Hopefully you will be fine :fc:

there will be thousands that will take early retirement so i wouldn't worry
Thanks, think you guys are probably right and it sounds like most the losses will be 'natural departures'. In a way maybe I'm lucky to have joined when I did as they'll be putting recruitment freezes in place now

[The investigation into lockdown-breaking parties
in Downing Street and around Whitehall has concluded,
the Met Police has announced.
In all, police have made 126 referrals for fines relating
to the partygate scandal - not all of which
have yet been issued.
Boris Johnson, his wife Carrie and Chancellor Rishi Sunak
are among those that have been fined.
The PA news agency reported that the PM has
not at this stage received notification of a
further fixed penalty notice in addition
to the one he has already received.
Of those who received fines,
53 were men and 73 were women, the force said,
adding that some people received more than one.]

You realise that the PPC is the highest authority on this right?
PPC? :suspect:
I think as adults we can stop calling this a party
its drinks after work, in work
ffs
The thing is a photo of Boris holding a drink is not evidence in my view and would not hold up on court.
I’ve been to loads of parties / doos over the decades and I’ve raised a glass on many occasion yet I’ve never actually downed any alcohol being a tea-totaler .

If he's not gonna resign or be 1922ed out, the Opposition should use his (fake) contrition to get some stuff put through to help with the cost of living. I wouldn't be surprised if a bunch of stuff gets announced anyway, to try and sweep Partygate under the rug.

Ministers who break standards rules in a "minor" way will not be expected to resign or face the sack, under new government guidelines.
It has long been a convention that MPs should quit government for breaking the Ministerial Code in any way.
But in a new section of the code, the PM has been given the option of ordering a lesser sanction instead.

Interesting times. Although there may only be 54 letters in, once there is an actual vote, a lot of people could join in and boot Boris out. I think it was a pretty stupid move from Boris supporters to criticise those who had submitted letters, that may well have been the final straw

Tbh most of BoJo's premiership has been a canvas for the rebels.
boris will be gone. Whether it happens tonight or in a years time, he won't be the leader come the next GE
This timing is actually pretty good for Boris I think. Remember he still has to go to the select committee over partygate which could be quite damaging but if he wins this vote he's safe for a year. I'll be amazed if he loses
i don't think he will lose tonight, but he is on borrowed time now

2024 is actually in sight now, so I'd imagine a lot of Tories are worrying about their party's image and the safety of their seat.
102 Tory MPs have publicly backed him so far, a lot less than Theresa May had at the same stage in 2018
i remember when thatcher had her vote of confidence and john major said he gave her his full backing, then he stood against her and became leader, so these words of support are really meaningless
what we will know today is exactly how many mps voted against him, once that number is out in the open, its all downhill from there. It may take a year, but its inevitable

If he wins the 6PM-8PM vote with a big number
Some are saying call a General Election?
But that is silly

If he wins ... can/will he have a shuffle and get rid of the main detractors ??

Conservative MP Natalie Elphicke has claimed the Tory Party is "not divided" ahead of giving her support for Boris Johnson in a confidence vote this evening.
Disagreeing that the vote is due to a lack of confidence in the PM, Elphicke argued the reason for it is to "make sure that the views can be held and then we can come and unite behind the prime minister", she told the BBC.
Asked how Johnson can unite the party if he wins, she said: “I don’t agree that it’s a divided party. I think there are decisions to be made and there are a range of views.
“I believe that is what will happen because the confidence vote will be held. People have had their say and then we can move forward.”

Any overt proclamations of loyalty from backbenchers will probably be them throwing their bats into the ring in the event of him winning the vote, and having to chuck anyone out of the Cabinet...
The BBC's political research unit places the number of Conservative MPs pledging publicly to support Boris Johnson in the confidence vote at 131.
Well I don’t really mind what happens as I have no interest in politics... I just kinda like Boris :)
It does seem odd that the Tories are trying to get rid of their only charismatic character only a couple of years after 14 million people voted for Boris ..

BBC Newsnight's political editor Nicholas Watt says supporters of Boris Johnson are looking downbeat, and there's intense anger, too.
Watt reports that one ally of the PM said his colleagues were "lying snakes" while another strong supporter of Johnson said he could "throttle" those MPs who "want to hand our country to a coalition of Labour, the SNP and the Liberal Democrats".
