Just when you thought Boris couldn't get any more stupid.
Social housing is there for a reason and the fact is if people on benefits do manage to buy their homes what when there's loads of repairs to do on it. When you have a social landlord all that is their responsibility. Sigh.
thesheriff443

The problem is there are not enough houses flats bungalows to go around and people are renting to the grave also sensible people on benefits once in a property tend to stay in that property until they die so that property doesn’t become available again for years
With the cost of living rising daily how many will take up the offer, I’d say not many because if you can’t afford to heat a house you ain’t going to buy it
If a property does get sold it puts money back in the kitty for more houses to be built
it gives people more options which can only be a good thing in my opinion. Personally, i don't think there will be much uptake, but that shouldn't stop it being an option

A major issue with this is upkeep. Yes mortgages (if taken early) are cheaper than private rent these days but they're not cheaper than council rent... they're saying people can use housing allowance to pay a mortgage which in theory is great - but I'm assuming it doesn't come with the other perks of being a council tenant such as repairs & upkeep.
If someone is living on the bare bones of income on benefits but the new mortgage idea works fine then on an average day everything is great --- until the roof pops a leak, the drainage gets blocked or the heating packs in. Where are those people going to find £500 for a home repair that they're now responsible for? Realistically to be a home owner, you need to know you can afford the mortgage, decent home insurance, and that at any given moment you can get your hands on at least £1000 if necessary for emergencies.
Basically... I think the only people this will work for is maybe younger families who are themselves on benefits, but have parents/other family they could fall back on in an emergency.

OK in all seriousness - who are these families with "monthly" shopping bills of under £400 a month? ... under £100 a week?
I do a "big" weekly shop that's around £100 every weekend and then I'm back in there 4 or 5 times during the week spending another £20 - £40 each time! We don't eat extravagantly or excessively so ... how are people actually spending less than £100 a week for a whole family? Where are they getting this data?

If they don’t want to create wealth to tackle to cost of living crisis because of inflation, then it’s really quite simple; they need to do more to redistribute the wealth that already exists. Take ALL of the tax off fuel at the pumps and find it elsewhere. Place an absolute hard cap on energy increases; subsidise the companies of needs be. Those two things alone would be a start. Tories won’t do any of that though.

Waitrose?

Because the “food” is by and large disgusting and I don’t think “people should reduce their outgoings by living off sawdust and offal scraps” is a particularly forward-thinking suggestion.
I shop at most of the supermarkets on and off. Mostly Tesco or Sainsburies these days to be honest out of sheer laziness; I love M&S food but it means going to two supermarkets because it’s crap for non-food household items. Find that I just don’t have the time these days.
I’m not struggling to afford food but I don’t come from an “I’m alright Jack” mindset where I’m happy to say “oh well my food budget is affordable for me so people on low incomes can just tighten their belts or eat poor quality food, what’s the drama”. We keep consistently getting pay bumps but lately it feels like those are only keeping up with increases? £12k increase in annual household income this year (pre tax) or thereabouts but it feels like once you factor in fuel increases, utility bills and food constantly going up we’re actually only a few hundred per month better off than the same time last year. That’s not a flex; I’m saying I have no idea wtf people are doing in their income is currently fairly static??
Not to mention that the price of basics is increasing everywhere… including the gross budget places.
I go to Lidl for precisely two things;
- Peppa Pig ice creams
- Yoghurts. For some reason their yoghurts are amazing. It makes no logical sense that they would be but they are . The “luxury” brand ones and the “layered bio” style ones. ****ing delicious.
I’ll also buy their dirt cheap laundry detergent if I’m in because, as a pro-tip, if you use a good quality fabric softener to add some flavour to the wash it literally does not matter what detergent you use, and fabric saoftener is far cheaper than detergent.
Money saving expert right here.
