He did well
answering more questions,
than any others
When senior Tories announce the rules for this contest this evening the number of candidates could become smaller quite swiftly, as one key decision will be about a threshold.
At the last leadership election, any candidate needed eight MPs backing them just to get into the first round of voting.
The Tories now have more MPs due to a big general election victory in 2019. There is talk of the number increasing, potentially to around 20.
The idea is that any candidate would have to show they have a serious base of support in the parliamentary party.
If that initial threshold is quite high, some potential candidates may simply be unable to meet it. They’ll be out before they’ve even really begun running in earnest.
Some candidates don’t have close to 20 colleagues backing them yet. But plenty of MPs have yet to declare their allegiance.
It’s important to remember these leadership contests can be unpredictable. Often a candidate who isn’t the favourite can go quite far once things get underway.

As to the vote of no confidence and in relation to these candidates for leader now.
Of course it's a gesture and WILL be soundly defeated .
Despite the Con MPs wanting this PM gone for his deceit, lies and even lawbreaking too.
Plus former and present Ministers now seeking to want to throw out major Johnson policies, which THEY voted for.
The common sense position would be, how can there be confidence in such a shambles of a government.
Certainly possibly to the voters.
So let's see IF any Con MPs realise that and even just abstain.
However too, let's see how ALL the opposition parties vote too.
Like the DUP for instance and ALL the Lib Dems.
As well as the SNP and Plaid Cymru too.
So while a losing vote from the off.
It's still a fair attempt to object to and HIGHLIGHT further the obscenity of this disgraced PM left in place for a further possible 2 months by the Con party who want him gone.
Which may help voters decide how they see these candidates.
Although with no say in who wins.
it's summer recess next week, before parliament is back, boris will be gone, so it's show boating, simple as that. Labour are just pissed they have and will be out of the daily news cycle for weeks

Johnson is still the PM.
Any major incident arising, he's the Prime Minister.
Recess or no recess.
Of course it's partly showboating, politics is full of that from ALL parties.
If you think, if the roles here were reversed , that the Cons wouldn't be tabling a no confidence motion, then I thnk you'd be badly mistaken.
For me, I want to see if it goes ahead just what ALL other so called opposition parties vote or even don't .
One good thing for me today I hope anyhow.
Is Rees-Mogg and Dorries coming out for false Truss.
Hopefully that's the end of her chances.

Nominations close in just under three hours' time, and as we've been reporting candidates need at least 20 MPs to back them to get onto the first ballot.
Throughout the day we've been hearing different positions from some of the candidates. We've also finally heard from Priti Patel, who has decided not to run.
One candidate who we haven't heard much from today is Rehman Chishti - a junior Foreign Office minister and a surprise contender.
The Gillingham MP has not received one single public backer among Tory MPs, however Rehman has tweeted that he will "continue my candidature till the very end".
Tory MP Aaron Bell has handed in the nomination papers for Tom Tugendhat's leadership bid to Tory 1922 Committee chairman Sir Graham Brady.
He is indicating Tugendhat has the support of the 20 MPs required to get onto the leadership ballot.
"Tom is now the first candidate to be duly nominated," Bell says.

The first Tory leadership debate will be hosted by ITV on Sunday, with unknown underdogs and big-hitting Cabinet ministers all hoping they can get on the billing.
It is not yet clear how many candidates will be taking part in the debate, with the rules and timeframe for the contest still yet to be set out.
There are 11 hopefuls so far, however that number is likely to be significantly reduced by the time the first debate takes place at 7pm on Sunday, July 17.

Heart Attack
[On the evening of 11 May 1994,
with around 500 people present,
Smith made a speech at a fundraising dinner
at Park Lane Hotel, London, saying
"The opportunity to serve
our country—that is all we ask".
At 8:05 a.m. the following morning,
whilst in his Barbican flat,
Smith suffered a fatal heart attack.]
[First heart attack
Smith suffered a heart attack
on 9 October 1988, and was forced to
spend three months away from
Westminster to recover.
On that occasion, he had complained of chest pains
the night before and had to be persuaded
to cancel a flight to London
so he could go to hospital for a check-up.
He was examined at the
Edinburgh Royal Infirmary by an ECG.
The doctor who examined him said,
"Whatever it is, we don't think it is your heart".
Then, Smith suddenly collapsed and was briefly
unconscious before coming around.
He spent three days in intensive care before
leaving hospital on 20 October 1988 and
made a full recovery.]

Penny Mordaunt would beat all her Conservative leadership rivals in a head-to-head contest, new polling of the party’s grassroots suggests.
Ms Mordaunt, the international trade minister, led the candidates in a series of run-offs carried out by the Conservative Home website.
Kemi Badenoch, the former equalities minister, was second while Liz Truss, the Foreign Secretary, was third. Ms Badenoch would beat all her fellow candidates except Ms Mordaunt.
In fourth and fifth were Suella Braverman, the Attorney General, and Nadhim Zahawi, the Chancellor.

I've thought all through Johnson's time as PM that it's been an absolute waste of time to engage in PMQs with him.
It's even moreso a waste of time this week and next.
With Johnson occupying the office now of PM as just a puppet.
Not really anything to go on.
So apart from the fury of the Speaker at the start with the ALBA MPs.
This PMQs and possibly next week's are in effect pointless.
This one definitely so.
Johnson's hands now in effect tied, so nothing to really ask or go on about really.

if the tory membership want Penny, a lot of mp's will switch over to her and quite a few of the candidates could struggle to get the magic 30 today

A good day for Penny and perhaps Tom....
i don't think anyone would have predicted penny to be the new PM a week ago

Interesting.
Pleased Zahawi is out the running.
Even more pleased Hunt won't get the chance to inflict the awful Esther McVey as deputy PM on the Nation plus he came last.
Hunt lost at least 2 votes from yesterday which is quite funny

Rishi pledges are pretty funny, he wants to increase what he has already done ro screw over the public which won't see him voted in

There was a suggestion some Rishi supporters lent him their vote yesterday looks like that was the case
Interesting to hear a couple of MPs stating categorically that there is no way that Rishi will be PM as he’s just too unpopular with the MPs in general and whoever goes up against him in the final two .. will win

i'm not convinced, they have an agenda, so i wouldn't believe them.
There are 3 candidates from the right wing of the party, as they drop out, their votes will be transferred to the one thats left. So, for example, add 60 votes to Liz and she takes the lead over Sunak

2 ITV1HD Live 7PM Sunday

Sunak's vote is close to being maxed out, he wont take many votes from other candidates. Liz could gain 70 votes and Penny could gain 80, so, for me the last 2 are likely to be Liz and Penny
That would make it
Mordaunt 147
Truss 120
Sunak 88

If it came down to Mordaunt and Truss.
I'd hope Mordaunt won.
Couldn't bear smug Rees-Mogg and the uselessly deluded Nadine Dorries getting their candidate winning.
