it's pretty interesting how she is being targeted. Does anyone think she will be worse than any of the other candidates where funding and associations with dodgy people is concerned because I don't

Fair point. As you say, I'd be surprised if any of them didn't have dodgy donors. As for the self-ID thing, as long as she doesn't actually push it forward should she get the position...

she couldn't push it forward on her own and there are enough people in the tory party against it to stop it dead in it's tracks, so i don't even know why it's being discussed to be honest other than to try and create mistrust toward her

I think all the candidates are grim in one respect or another, i just find it interesting that the knives are out for her

Please don't let it be Rishi who wins.

That's all I'd say. Maybe Tom or Penny for PM.

Why would they risk losing everything in a general election that they may well lose.

We know that they are all selfish, self-serving individuals

Brown, May and Boris all called an election. They do it because their ego makes them believe they can win it easily. Also, timing wise, an early election is probably advisable before everyone really starts to suffer

How is it not democratic? Prime Ministers aren't elected, they're the leader of the party with the most MPs. The Conservative party currently is the largest party, so it's democratic that the PM is a Tory.

I was thinking last week that Penny was PM material but her performance the other night was terrible.

She stood there and looked like a block of wood. Had no enthusiasm at all.

And whatever she said, just sounded like she had rehearsed it all.

But something else: WHY THIS obsession with what a woman is??? I don't care what a woman is or what a man is. Such braindead debate. The media are obsessed with it. Julia on Talk TV gets her knickers in a twist every day about it. Get a life! :p

The real issue is the cost of living crisis!

But Penny will definitely have to up her game tonight or she could go in 4th place.

**Also, I don't get the love for Badenoch. To me, she comes across as bland and 'meh'.

But she is painted as some kind of saviour. Crazy. Who is behind this tripe? Who is promoting this dross?

NEXT! :p

I just laughed at Sunak.

He said to Penny, where was she gonna get the money from for her financial plans. She missed a trick there. She should have told Sunak she WOULD have been able to use the £12 BILLION he gave away to fraud and wrote off.

Sunak is running to put right the mess he created. :joker::joker:

It's a hot button topic as MRAs want women's rights to given to men who identify as women. Women's sports and spaces are just expected to step aside for them.

It's a big talking point because places are taking the knee to the issue, and we see women getting villified for saying that maybe vulnerable women shouldn't be made to share a ward with males and that it's unfair for women to compete against males.

Conservative leadership hopeful Penny Mordaunt has called for an end to toxic politics, saying the focus needs to be on picking a new prime minister.

She told the BBC there were a "number of smears going on in the papers" and hit back at claims that she had ever backed gender self-identification.

Ms Mordaunt is one of five candidates left in the leadership race, ahead of the next round of voting on Monday.

Tom Tugendhat meanwhile said the Tories needed a "clean start".

Ms Mordaunt - second in the contest according to the latest round of MPs' votes - told the Sunday Morning programme the cost-of-living crisis was her priority.

She was also questioned about her stance on how people should be allowed to legally change their gender, after questions were raised during the contest about her record when she was equalities minister.

Asked by Sophie Raworth whether she thought trans people should have to get a medical diagnosis of gender dysphoria before they could legally change their gender, she said: "Yes."

Yes I believe trans women should be kept out of women's sports. It's only right. But this constant debate about what a woman is sends me crazy. It's like is that the only thing that matters?? Like I said Julia on Talk TV is obsessed.

I don't mind Tom referencing his Army connection.

Respect for our servicemen is and should be high.

He criticised heavily the government's actions on the withdrawal from Afghanistan which he was right to do.
Plus he has the knowledge of what the armed forces are often up against and wrongly put up against.

Leadership is important in the armed forces.
He's right to point out that out.

Truss keeps on about fighting Putin too.

You had to keep reminding yourself these were five people who are actually in the same party.

And the two of them taking the greatest lumps out of each other sat around the same cabinet table a fortnight ago.

Changing leaders between elections can offer a party a chance to renew in office.

It also offers plentiful opportunity for it to rip itself to shreds in public.

There are nerves in Conservative circles that Sunday evening's debate was rather more the latter than the former.

So after a weekend of two and a half hours of primetime television debate and acres of newsprint, where do we find ourselves as we enter the second week of the Conservative leadership contest?

TV debates serve up real jeopardy, particularly for those with the most to lose.

On Friday's debate on Channel 4, the two outsiders, in terms of their support among Conservative MPs so far at least, seemed to relish it, perhaps pleasantly surprised they had made it so far.

Kemi Badenoch and Tom Tugendhat were probably the least known to most viewers, and with little to lose.

Whereas the big three, in terms of votes so far, Rishi Sunak, Penny Mordaunt and Liz Truss, feared going backwards; denting their solid starts.

Things felt different in the ITV debate.

The format, for a start.

Without the punctuation marks of a live audience in the studio, with its questions and applause, and with the addition of some nifty ideas such as each candidate being able to put a question to just one other, the exchanges felt sharper, more spiky.

The candidates addressed each other rather than the audience in the studio, and often archly.

Team Truss are candid: "Liz was better tonight that on Friday" one aide told me.

"She is the clear heavyweight on the economy to rival Rishi. That was a battle of the grown ups between Liz and Rishi, with Liz the 'change' candidate on the economy," a source added.

They want to portray a Sunak premiership - economically at least - as more of the same as what's gone before, without the scruffy blonde hair.

Yet again Mr Sunak was the focus of most, if not all of the barbs coming from his opponents.

Or, we should remind ourselves, colleagues.

I'm told his question to Liz Truss, "what do you regret most, being a Lib Dem or being a Remainer?" was meant to be light hearted.

It didn't sound anything of the sort. More like a laser guided zap at her true Conservative credentials.

Sadly I expect that too.

It reveals a lot about the narrow Conservative voting that the candidate who it was claimed in polling done, easily topped the first debate and was also 2nd in the next debate.
Will likely be out.

While the waste of space Truss, who was LAST in the first debate and 2nd bottom in the next has strong support.

They are AGAIN charging in to elect the WRONG choice again.

Then again however Labour has that same problem too.

All it means though as a result is the UK is left with the worst of political leaders.
For the main 3 UK wide party leaders I doubt the UK has been so badly served by them as it is now.

Nigel on point...

A couple of days after Boris Johnson resigned, I was told by a wealthy Tory
donor that the big business backers had decided they wanted Liz Truss to win.
Why? Because she's the one they think would be easiest to manipulate. I was
slightly shocked to hear this – which probably does explain, of course, why I'm
not a billionaire.

Given that we have a Stop Rishi campaign, it seems clear to me that Truss
will make it through to the last two and will subsequently win with the
membership. Just think of it. A Remain-voting, former card-carrying and
conference-speaking member of Liberal Democrats, who once endorsed
Republicanism, a woman who voted for May's disastrous deal three times,
will likely lead the Conservative Party and post-Brexit Britain. You simply
couldn't make it up. It is possible that she now believes in dealing with the
Northern Ireland protocol and genuine conservatism, but I doubt it. All I see
here is a careerist. How did it come to this?

Her public performances are weak to the point of being laughable (just look
at her reading out her closing statement last night) and she will not connect
with working-class Britain. I think that the Conservative Party is in much
bigger trouble than it understands. If only Boris Johnson had told the truth
and fulfilled his manifesto pledges. Alas he did not, and the final insult to us
all is 6 more weeks of this protracted and uninspiring leadership campaign.

Sky News has cancelled its Conservative leadership debate after Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss pulled out from the event.

The debate was due to be hosted by Kay Burley tomorrow evening.

Conservative MPs are said to be concerned about the damage the debates are doing to the image of the party, exposing disagreements and splits.

Head of Sky News, John Ryley, said: "Sky News has campaigned for an independent commission to organise the running of TV debates between leaders of Britain's main parties.

Fine isn't it. Dirty tricks to make sure who 'wins'.

The day after they clashed in ITV's televised debate, it's understood that Tory leadership candidates were summoned by the 1922 Committee of Conservative backbenchers earlier today and reminded to be civil in their debates.

The five remaining candidates were spoken to in Parliament this afternoon. The backbench committee also sought assurances no candidate would drop out if they reached the final two.

It comes after a TV debate between the contenders on Sky News scheduled for Tuesday was cancelled after Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss declined to take part. Senior Tories have express concern that angry arguments in public could damage the party.

Nick Toms is worried by Kemi Badenoch’s idea to cut down on support staff in schools

As the former chair of governors at Jubilee primary school, where Kemi Badenoch was a governor, I am shocked that she can say resources can be saved from “superfluous support staff and peripheral activities” in schools.
As she will know from her time at the school, which serves some of the most deprived parts of Brixton, south London, there are no superfluous support staff. Teaching assistants play a vital role in aiding teachers in classes where many of the children come from highly disadvantaged backgrounds and need all the help they can get. Some are allocated to specific children as part of their educational needs assessment

It seemed heartfelt to be fair

It was actually Bridget Phillipson, shadow education secretary who criticised Kemi Badenoch because her comments on cutting down on the number of support staff in schools is concerning.

each and every one of these candidates has skeletons. You can bet the media will be going for the winner with a fine tooth comb the moment they win

Truss’s 18 month affair sticks in my gut
Both parties were married at the time and the affair meant the end of Mark Field’s marriage

It will be interesting to see today's figures.

I must be missing a great deal as I just cannot understand how there's people in the Cons and the media building up Truss.
As a candidate for leader, she is the worst possible candidate, in my view anyhow.

bots
19-07-2022, 07:25 AM
Truss has got the big money behind her, the reason is as simple as that. If the big donors want Truss, the tory mp's will be quick to oblige. I'm not sure we have seen this story run it's course yet though. For me, any of the 3 ladies could make the final pairing as it stands now. It's feasible for example that Rishi's team gift Kemi a few votes to make sure Truss finishes last today .... stranger things have happened

Liz Truss is just a continuation of Boris Johnson without the jokes.

They are probably losing the next election is she wins.

Then they would appoint a 'moderniser' leader. ie. David Cameron 2.0.

There are a whole swathe of tories that are missing from this contest because boris got shot of them before the last election. That traditionally would have been the section of the party that would have triumphed now

I'm still not getting this Kemi Badenoch thing.

Every time I turn on the radio or go on YouTube, it's constant 'she is the most amazing person ever.'

It's like a bizarre second coming. Really odd. She might be moderately adequate but I find her quite rude in those debates.

In my view, she's not PM material. But like I say this obsession with her, it's totally baffling.

I don't know exactly who is supporting her but I find it really weird.

I hope she is knocked out of the race today so people will stop worshipping her. :joker:

Where are people getting this sort of thing from? Apart from wanting to cut school funding for support staff I've not really heard anything questionable from her?

One thing is for sure, if either Sunak or Truss is elected PM, they will be immediately under fire from the media.

Either one will be a disaster. Good luck Starmer. He has plenty to attack Sunak or Truss with.

Either one will lose the next General Election.
