Tory leadership hopeful Rishi Sunak has pledged to scrap the 5% VAT rate on household energy bills if prices continue to rise later this year.

The former chancellor, who has not promised tax cuts so far in his campaign, said the plan would help families with rising living costs.

Rival Liz Truss's campaign team described the move as desperate - accusing him of a "screeching U-turn".

Talk TV has apparently adopted her as their own. Mind-boggling. Kevin O'Sullivan almost salivated over her.:hehe:

Talk TV Twitter is also awash with posters who think Liz is just amazing.

Even some of the people who front GB News talk as if Liz is awesome in every way.:joker:

At least some on GB News recognise Liz as the hopeless person she is. Andrew Neil was one who I saw who thinks Liz doesn't know what she's talking about. David Mellor thinks she dross too.

Both really cringing.

What a choice from 358 Con MPs.
These are the best they've got.
Chronic.

Sunak answered better.
The alien lookalike was awful.
She's going to look at this, look at that.
Simplify things like the benefit structures too even.

Who on earth does deluded Truss think has more complicated these things over the last 12 YEARS.
Yes, the government SHE has been part of.

Totally hopeless.

I now kind of hope she does win.
Labour has a pretty bad leader but in my view a mannequin from a store window should be able to wipe the floor with Truss.

She's like a weird and warped cross between Mrs May and Jo Swinson as to being deluded too.

The next election is going to be a great one if people want to be put to sleep that is.

Two personality dead leaders of the 2 main Parties.

Conservative leadership hopeful Rishi Sunak has said he would introduce a £10 fine for patients who repeatedly miss GP or hospital appointments.

Mr Sunak told the Sunday Telegraph he wanted to be "transformational" and "do something brave and... different".

Yeah, fine people who are already struggling to pay for anything. Great strategy. The problem is in getting an appointment from a chronic shortage of doctors. The solution is to attract more doctors not to fine people

These 2 are near promising, well rather more just saying possibly with no real meaning behind it.
To actually do more in around 2 years than any other PM has done in the previous 5 or more years.

It's like they are sidestepping the cost of living crisis which NO ONE has any idea of where that may be in a year off even.
The Ukraine situation as to effects on the World from that still to come.

Truss is planning a housing revolution
Quite what this false individual means as to that is unclear.
I think every new PM in even just my lifetime has promised a housing shake up.
Yet nothing ever delivered.

Are Con members really this bad that they cannot see the false tripe being spouted by both of these failures already.

Sunak is seen as a backstabber re Johnson.
The only person who stabbed Johnson in the back was Johnson himself, by his lawbreaking, deceit and lies and even trying to cover up an alleged sexual predator.

As for Truss, nothing of the wrong Johnson did would have had her give up her lucrative Ministerial post.
So she'd have allowed and enabled even MORE deceit, lies and wrongdoing.

These 2 honestly are the best the Cons can offer the UK after 2 failed attempts of new leaders already in just the last 3 years.
ALL powers that be then iterally please help the UK with either of these 2 shambolic and desperate candidates.

As for charging patients missing GP appointments.

It's not that easy to get GP appointments anyhow lately.
It's not often I've gone to one but times I have it's been anything up to and even over 45 minutes past the appointment time where I've eventually been seen.
So will a payment be made for GPs not seeing patients on time.

I think it wrong to be missing appointments obviously, I'm not sure however that fining patients is going to create a warm climate between Doctors and patients however.

Ministers have criticised Nadine Dorries for sharing a doctored image of Rishi Sunak wielding a knife behind Boris Johnson's back.

The culture secretary retweeted an image of the PM depicted as Julius Caesar about to be stabbed in the back by Mr Sunak, in the role of Brutus.

Greg Hands said it was "dangerous", while Sir Robert Buckland said it was "not just incendiary - it's wrong".

An ally of Ms Dorries said it was "obviously a satirical image".

Shortly before sharing the picture that was posted by another account on Twitter, Ms Dorries also wrote that Mr Sunak had "stabbed Boris Johnson in the back".

Mr Hands said he was sure Foreign Secretary Liz Truss - who is being backed by Ms Dorries - would "disown this kind of behaviour".

The business minister, who is a supporter of Mr Sunak said: "It's not even a year since the stabbing of Sir David Amess at his Southend constituency surgery. It is very, very bad taste - dangerous even.

"I do find it distasteful and less than a year after the stabbing."

Fellow Conservative MP Sir David was stabbed to death by Islamic State fanatic Ali Harbi Ali in Essex in October last year. Ali has since been jailed for life for the murder.

Politics is so fickle (faecal) that it's anyone's guess who will win a GE. The tories will pick the time that best suits them so we will see

I think it's a safe bet that the next election is closed in on at the earliest Autumn next year or Spring to Summer 2024.

They are sort of boxed in to that.

So much going on, the cost of living crisis to hit in October then possibly worse again to March and April bills next year.
Isn't going to reflect well for any election before the Autumn of 2023.
That's when the new proposed boundary changes will be in place.
Giving a probable 10 more seats to the Cons and taking 4 off Labour.

The public independent inquiry into the pandemic starts next year and the likely leakage from the early part of the pandemic will be far from good for the Cons.
Especially when the bereaved families get their say at said inquiry.

Plus Ukraine, what further drain will that conflict continue to take from the UK resources.
Both these candidates are bound to continue all help financial and otherwise needed there.

I've no doubt the Cons can pull any lead back BUT they now not only have to reverse an average 7/8 point lead Labour has had for ages now.
They have to get at least 4% ahead to just get the barest majority.

Even if both parties were more level in percentages.
That, with all the anti Con votes from the other parties in parliament would see the Cons out.

So there seems only 18 months at best before they'll need to be thinking of a general election.
With all the obstacles of uncertainty of cost of living, Ukraine and anything else unexpected arising.

With either Sunak or Truss as PM of which neither could even get the votes of only HALF of their own MPs in a series of ballots, never mind convince really fed up voters who wanted to see real change.
Only seeing a continuance of possible deceit and only jam tomorrow, sometime.

If Labour don't see these incompetents off, then Labour deserve to stay in the doldrums.
These 2 candidates are absolutely pathetic.

Again I hope Truss wins.
She's a Mrs May type campaigner and seems as delusional as Jo Swinson of the Lib Dems.

showing why any voting changes

Not for me arista
Curtice has his own agenda.

Voting changes are wanted.
By voters, by all other Parties except the Cons.

I will push all I can to persuade Labour to adopt PR.
It would win an election I believe and have the support of every Party elected to Westminster.
Obviously not the Cons who don't believe in fairer voting and only want absolute power for their own extreme policy implementation.

It needs one of the 2 main Parties to accept PR.
Only Labour could be likely to.
PR in part is used in ALL other elections across the UK, except still for local and general elections.

I don't expect Cons to embrace it.
The only Party of all Parties not to want it.
Over 80% of Labour members want it.
Voters of Labour and other Parties too, ( not the Cons obviously).
Plus all other Parties.
Crikey even likely the DUP in N Ireland.

Curtice has his own agenda on things but I wholly disagree with him on this.

It has to be stopped that Parties can take really large overall majorities and govern with only around the support of 4 (+) of every 10 voters.
Thereby riding over the wishes and votes of the majority of voters.
That is now NOT the right kind of democracy.

Up to a quarter of voters now rarely support either of the 2 main Parties.
Their votes counting for nothing.
That's NOT a fair democracy any longer.

I couldn't care one.bit if he was arista.
I'd tell him my view which is long held now.

It is wholly right that for to govern absolutely overall majorities that it should be you need 50% + of the votes cast.

In 2005 Labour governed with a 68 overall majority getting less than 36% of the votes.
That's obscene in a so called democracy.

The last election for only 43% of the votes put this extreme government in with an 80 overall majority.

The wishes of 55+% of voters meaningless.
All those voters with NO representation in or to government

Curtice likely doesn't like PR.
I find I don't agree with a lot of his own findings.

This now derided and tarnished political electoral system of government cannot be fixed or restore trust in by retaining this antiquated first past the post system.

Of course Cons would be screaming and panicking if PR was to become more a reality.
Not all Cons, I do know of Cons who now also support PR in some form.

The thing with PR though is that it wouldn't work with the current parliamentary system. We don't vote for the PM, or even the government - we vote for who we want to represent our constituency in the House of Commons. A PR system wouldn't be voting for a local MP.

Oliver hi.

There's a great number of people in constituencies who haven't a clue who their MP currently is.

There are systems which can keep in the main constituency MP representation.

If things continue as they are then divisions across the UK will only widen.

Why can we have PR for the N Ireland elections, Welsh and Scottish elections.
Plus police and crime commissioner elections and also for ALL Mayoral elections.
However not for council and general elections.

We even had PR for the European elections too.

This system was fine when 2 Parties were taking 80+ to over 90+% of the votes cast.
Not now when they take massive overall majority power with around 40% of the votes only.
Against the votes of we'll over half of those who vote.

joeysteele
03-08-2022, 09:18 AM
the only people that ever want to change the electoral system are those who are unhappy with the result. That's a fact. They are unable to accept democracy

No way.

I'd have wanted PR long before now.

The only ones who actually DON'T want PR and never will are those happy to see the votes of the majority dismissed for year after year in all elections as their Part gets absolute unfettered power to do whatever they like.

That's only the Cons.
Not all of them thankfully, some are seeing the light.

Those who want PR actually want all votes to count, properly representative of votes cast in elections .
Not overridden by a failing electoral system.

Which gave absolute power to someone like Johnson who then abused that power and trust too

PR would mean all votes coming to mean something and all votes to really count and make a difference.
It's no surprise to me however that PR would have Cons screeching and shaking in their boots.

It should never be in any democracy that around 40% of the votes can just dismiss and ignore the votes of way over 50% of the votes against.
By having absolute power.
No matter the Party in power.

50% of the seats for 50% of the votes.
That's true and real fair vote democracy.

Every vote does count, as we elect local MPs.

Would you want an American voting system?

I'd want no candidate elected who didn't get 50% of the votes cast.

A government given total power for only around 40% of the votes cast.
With anything from 25% to 30% not even bothering to vote even.
Is wrong now in my view.

So I support PR.
I believe over the first past the post system now more voters would prefer PR.

Certainly not however the more hard-line Con voters.
No surprise to me is that whatsoever.

It would mean for them and for my Party too that NO Party could govern alone in future and not get ridiculous overall majorities.
My hope would be that would move to a more consensus in both government and politics.

I'd love to see any polling on PR with ALL voters actually.
Not just the Con view of it's only losers who want it.

With the recently resigning Ministers and current ones now backing Truss.
Far from being any kind of fresh and changed look to this government.
It appears more likely under Truss just a continuation of the worst of the lot.

With all the intentions that Truss is throwing out, it seems just more of say anything then do little to nothing.

I know I am biased against this government in fact I proudly hold my hands up to that.

However for the whole of the UK and the reckless rhetoric already of Truss, just actually like Johnson's divisive rhetoric before.
This is a disaster looming.
However it appears to be nothing of a new look, not at all.

Probably the worst candidates through to the final 2 with neither even getting anywhere near even half of Con MPs support after all the previous ballots even.

Shambolic is the best description of this government and even moreso for these 2 incompetents left in the race.
These 2 are just a likely now continuation of the deceit and lies of the man one of them will be replacing.

Guess this is a MUST watch !

Kay Burley is quite likely to ask the odd embarrassing question !!

Eg

Sky news presenter Kay Burley once asked a serial killer's wife if she thought their 'poor sex life' in the relationship caused him to kill the 6 women !!!

After that question then Liz Truss’s 18 month extramarital affair must be fair game surely ??

After all - how can she be trusted after successfully leading a double life for that long with nobody knowing ..

Sunak was impressive actually.
To be fair.

He answered her grilling easily and confidently.
The delivery of Truss however is appalling.

tbh he is obviously playing to the gallery, its not a general election audience, the audience are all Tories and in the main he is telling them what they want to hear, as distasteful as it may sound, I would imagine he was answering a question as well rather than coming out with it, at least one would hope so

The problem is, he wasn't feeding them red meat by saying what he will do, he was talking about the fact he already did. In a leadership contest, during a CoL crisis in which those towns and cities will feel it the most, and after raising tax on those same people to pay for brexit and ppe contracts.
