EastEnders > Corrie > Emmerdale (from best to worst). Tuesday nights that are just half an hour of Emmerdale are pretty grim, still. EastEnders is released at 6am on BBC iPlayer now on the weekdays it’s on so people be watching it early on the toilet or on their break in work. Come Tuesday and Thursday evenings it’s typically just Emmerdale. That can be annoying. Especially when it’s just Liam being awkward (why haven’t he and Nicola been diagnosed with autism yet?), the guy who plays Ethan acting very poorly indeed and abusive Tom throwing Belle under the ’bus for the trillionth time.

We used to like Corrie when it was on twice a week , Monday and Wednesday and they ended episodes on a knife- edge then we waited days to see what on earth was going to happen .
Nowadays soaps leak all the stories.. even details of a murder ..
Imagine reading a book with spoilers every few pages !!

The way certain adverts pathologise women. Why are you associating women with inherent bladder issues? Where’s that coming from and how does that even make sense? Isn’t it stereotypical that guys piss way more than ladies?

When Entertainment is more obsessed with people's heritage or sexuality more than they are about the individual as a person.
Like I saw an interview on Sky Sports News yesterday afternoon, where the woman was tasked with interviewing an ex-Footballer about him having Indian heritage.
Yes on Sky SPORTS News, they were more obsessed with talking about an ex-Footballer having Indian heritage and racism in Football, rather than talking about his time in Football, or what were his favourite memories of his time as a player (like an actual Sports channel should be doing) but instead they did what they always do these days, which is behave like Sky News.

People who have a generic answer to everything instead of doing the work to understand narcissism and de-enable toxicity. Dr Ramani’s work is not just another delusional TikTok piety of the snowflakey times. It’s life, and the woman genuinely knows her stuff. We can all learn from her and stamp patterns like that out of our workplaces. It might be by protecting our staff more and not just enabling the troublemakers around them who are self-confessed covert narcissists, it might be by making sure everyone has a fair say in meetings. Whatever. Do what you need to do but just do not look at people and their behaviour in the most literally non-nuanced, generified way there is when there’s complexity in the situations and/or an element of discomfort or concerns that have been raised before, but haven’t been acted on or had anything done about.

Also. The assumption that people who look white but are actually partially mixed race … can’t be mixed race, and vice-versa (this idea that being mixed-race inherently makes you black, whether that’s how you identify or not). Some people are more … racially ambiguous than others but it’s not a stretch to be somewhat mixed with something (Sri Lankan, Jamaican, Igbo, Yoruba, Ibibio, Akan, Sudanese, Afro-Virginian, Native Canadian, whatever) even with blue eyes. You don’t have to look or be 50-50 mixed in the stereotypical ‘white mum, black dad’ way to be mixed.

I detest Eastenders, although I come from the East End. I adore Corrie... do people from Manchester like it, I wonder?
I feel like it'll be on an individual, person-by-person basis with Corrie but I have definitely noticed that Liverpool and the South are a bit more skewed towards EastEnders than Corrie on average. Brookside was once the Scouse answer to the big 3 (to get territorial about it) so people who have at least lived in Liverpool during some of those times are used to the soap archetype being more cutting-edge and gritty. But in their prime all 3 were among the most-watched televised shows in the UK so it's often just a matter of order and preference. But before Corrie became gentrified and stuff, EastEnders was the characteristic cool soap that young people would watch. Not so much Corrie if they weren't from that side of the North and certainly not Emmerdale.
There's a part of me what detests Emmerdale but it fills a void on weeknights and is just another option for cosy entertainment on those Fridays so I do watch it. But it's only EastEnders, Corrie and (to an extent) Waterloo Road that I'm serious about as far as soap goes. Maybe Holby City but yeah. I like some elements of Emmerdale but it's a show that's tried to do EastEnders dirty so many times over the years and until the 2010s it lacked the grit that EastEnders and to an extent even Corrie had in at least some spades. I like cosy and comfy and I'm not totally adverse to the odd 'plane-crash (or whatever next stupid stunt Emerdale usually has planned) but it has to be based in a certain heaviness and grit. Nothing in Emmerdale really seems to follow from that as directly as EastEnders and Corrie do so it's not a show I take super-seriously. I just watch it, and not even regularly up-until the 50th anniversary (2 years ago).
Classic Emmerdale (they show repeats of that and Corrie on ITVX) is supposed to be in a good era for the show (2004-early 2005) at the moment but on the off-chance that I tune in I just don't see this quality people have spoken of. Farm politics just don't appeal to me. It's all very boring and dull.
It's no scam. It's just Santander being stupid and giving people false hope. Notifications like that pop up sometimes. For whatever reason.

It has to be said, though, Mock, that Samaritans aren’t just for suicidal people, so if you had a friend who needed support and was willing to talk about it to someone, they wouldn’t necessarily have to be suicidal to tap in or ask for emotional support. They’ll listen to anyone who’s in distress or just needs someone to talk to about something that’s getting in the way of them living their best lives. Anything.
I’ve definitely had suicidal moments when I needed to use Samaritans just to keep me gucci for the night (there’s no shame in being a little open about that) but that’s not all they’re there for.

Oh and my own personal gripe is with the Yakuza Video Game fandom.
Unlike other Video Game franchises where their fandoms will nitpick at even the slightest issue, the Yakuza fandom largely laps it up:
1. Name change from Yakuza to Like A Dragon (and I don't care if that's what it's called in Japan) we in the West obviously don't live in Japan, and we have been calling it Yakuza since the PS2 days, and that is how it should've stayed in the West.
But anyway, no resistance from the fandom to the title change.
2. Hardly any fight back on the horrible change to becoming a Turn Based RPG, when it was originally an Action-Adventure series, with a tiny amount of RPG thrown in, and I mean very slight.
We've even got people on Twitter, trying to call the series an RPG series, which is just disgusting as it isn't an RPG series, you are the genre that you started out as, it's that simple.
3. No fight back on all of the Yakuza cast from the Kiryu era largely being removed in Yakuza 7, which again helped lose that Game it's connections to the rest of the franchise imo. But again hardly any blow back on that from the fandom.
4. The fact that Yakuza 8 moved location from Japan to America for chunks of the Game, how on earth is that a Yakuza Game? Especially when you take into account all of the other changes that I've mentioned.
And 5. Dialling down the jokes/eccentricity, if some people don't like the jokes that you've told then tough, you imo don't dial down the humour just to please people that "might've" been offended, again common sense is just completely ignored though.

Nearly everything on TV nowadays is designed with one of these three things in mind at the very least. And possibly all three if it's a tragically awful product.
1. To make the viewer feel depressed.
2. To divide audiences over Politics.
And 3. Refusal to have a proper personality that isn't just about what demographic that you come from.

Surely we all want national teams to have players that have at least been educated through that particular country's education system, to actually then play for that country.

I seriously implore anyone who doesn’t believe in depression to visit an inpatient unit for the severely depressed.
“Suicide shouldn’t even be on your mind if you have money.”
When someone’s literally on death’s door and living in a world of nihilistic delusion it’s not really about how many numbers they have in their bank account. But people who don't know much about heavy depression don’t know how far the train goes inside the bottom-most pits of hell and torture. It really is a horrible set of illnesses. If you say otherwise it’s just because you don’t know what severe or even moderate types of depression look like. Simple.
… ya. Again, the fact that so many people out there (including those who should definitely know better) don’t know just-how severe depression can be. That depression can be psychotic and often is shouldn’t be a drastically shocking revelation. It’s just a basic fact and one that’s been much-known in the right circles for thousands of years. There’s nothing new or ground-breaking abar it, still.

Obviously bullying should never be acceptable, I do get what you're saying on that.
I think my three main areas where I feel like constructive criticism just gets frowned upon in some corners, and I really don't agree with any of them.
1. Politics.
2. Video Games if they have poor quality + how the industry is currently treating their employees.
And 3. If a TV Show is having writing issues.
Some people will think that you're out of order if you dare to have something negative to say, or are just questioning things in any one of those three fields in general.

It’s been much worse in that regard. Nothing current about it, Mock, it does have to be said.

I definitely agree with a lot of your points Redway.
My controversial belief, is that Celeb culture has unfortunately trivialized Mental Health issues to the point of having a bad week/month is them having "poor Mental Health" rather than just a bad period in their lives.
I mean I am personally lucky that I have never experienced poor Mental Health, I've had horrible stuff happen (like everyone does tbf, I'm not special in that regard) but I have never been mentally broken by them, I've probably come close a couple of times, but I do try to have Guts's mentality from Berserk of fighting on (obviously in a very different situation to Guts) but hopefully you get what I mean.
So basically I'm not a Mental Health expert, but I do believe that some Celebrities (not all,) are seeing the fact that society in general is opening up more about their Mental Health struggles, and having more sympathy for the people with poor Mental Health compared to a decade ago, and unfortunately I do think that some of these Celebrities are claiming falsely that they have had Mental Health issues, and the reason I think is for said Celeb to revitalize their fading career.
And what I think is then happening, is that some of society are unfortunately trivializing everybody who has poor Mental Health into the same negative stereotypes.
Gotcha.
But yeah. If you don’t understand depression, you don’t understand mental illness, period. (I’m not applying that to you at all.) And celebrities definitely do play their part in trivialising bipolar. That much is for-sure.

Like you've said yourself, it's a risk to so many people's livelihood, plus if we keep taking away reasons for people to go outside, we as a species are going to find it hard to procreate in the far future.
Because even before AI, all of the big shops are now available online, which again stops people from going outside and possibly meeting someone.

I still remember a Radio Show performance from Ke$ha that was extremely awful.
I have nothing personal against Ke$ha or her Music, but I'll never forget how that sounded.
This doesn't irritate me as such, but it does amuse me: A little while ago, I received a notificaiton for a fresh reply to a comment I made on YouTube....fifteen years ago lol. And more than that, the comment I left was so obviously made in response to another person, in a conversation whose context has since been lost through years and years of YouTube constantly reformatting the comments section and consequently breaking up the chain of replies, etc. In which case, I can't possibly be expected to stand by or disown the original comment with any particular degree of certainty or confidence. But this person was so confrontational and sarcastic in their tone, I just had to laugh. Imagine getting that uppity in response to a YouTube comment made fifteen years ago and whose contet has since been totally lost. Some strange people about.
The real funny part is that it was a comment on a Doctor Who video lol. So yeah, a real deep and consequential discussion has been lost to time, regrettably.

Yep. People who do bits with writing (whether it’s just as a little side-hustle or they’re earning serious buck as a senior linguist, or anything in-between) are usually the type of people who were very good at English in school and people like that have a lot of indispensable value to offer the world in whatever field they go on to specialise in. In an era of AI it’s easier than ever, even if only subtly at this point, to forget about libraries, reading actual printed paper for leisure and (in the near future, the way things are going) people who naturally excel in the written world (a lot of introverts prefer writing to talking so there, too, it just goes hand-in-hand) but emerging talent in anything literary should not be overlooked in young talent. Writers can do so much for people if-only people would stock more trust in actual people than flaming Chat GPT (or whatever it’s called; I don’t even know). I get how it can be useful in engineering and that’s fine but let it leave wordy-based jobs alone. That talent’s too viable to be eroded in the next few generations just-because AI’s here now.

Whenever you say that Video Games currently have poor quality in general, and then the community in general will say that it's more alive than ever because the "Indie" scene is going well, and look I have liked some Indie Games myself in the past, so I'm not being snobby when I say these few things about Indie Games.
1. Indie Games are not the face of the industry (that would be AAA Games) so for the masses that are only casually more into Video Games, will be seeing long release times, buggy launches, poor gameplay a lot of the time for a myriad of different reasons depending on the Game. And a lot of the time even poor storytelling.
2. Like any Video Game, some of these "great" Indie Games aren't going to be great for everyone, so when you factor in subjective taste on top of (in general) broken AAA Games (fair play to anyone that likes these Games) but to me and a fair few other people they are borderline broken Games, or just flat out tedious to play, on top of some Indie Games that personally just don't do it for you, the options of good Video Games for your personal taste is shrinking a fair amount.
3. Some Indie Games are just genuinely ****, I remember playing one where the writing was so small that I couldn't even read it's tutorial at all, which got me stuck in the Game.
4. After playing Haunting Ground recently (made by Capcom back in the PS2 days,) it really reminded me of what AAA Gaming can do when it's actually on form.
It can do the fun gameplay loop that Indie Games are so good at today, and combining it with fun storytelling that makes the characters and world feel more interesting.
And Sword Of The Berserk for the Dreamcast was developed by Yuke's (known for the WWE Games mainly,) and they're again another AAA studio that brought Berserk's fantastic world to life, on top of really fun gameplay.
Tbf the Berserk: Band Of The Hawk Game was fun as well (not as good as Sword Of The Berserk imo) but it was still a fun time, and again it was developed by Omega Force (who develop the Dynasty Warriors Games) and again they were able to do more with it than an Indie studio could.
And look, I don't mean this as an attack on Indie developers, some of them are really good imo (especially in comparison to modern AAA Games,) but I don't believe that the industry should be so overly reliant on Indie Games, remakes, remasters, and certainly not DLC trying to pass themselves off as unofficial Games.:umm2:
AAA Games need to get back on track again with great material that's new for the player to enjoy.
Rant over.

I imagine it was why he was cast, though.
As for the show itself I have to agree with the above: the concept is good and on paper should have made for a great "Lost-style" show. In practice it was very, very slow paced and I don't think I even made it through the first season.

She played a very rotten, rancid-for-no-reason character in her last 8 or so years anyway. I prefer 2006-12 Shirley. Fresher and not a second-fiddle player to the extended Carters. She had bite but she wasn’t completely foul and ugly with it at that point. Hated 2015-22 Shirley.
Either way, I don’t know why some people can’t just accept that she’s gone and stop pining for her to come back in all sorts of random scenarios.

People calling depression “fake news”. You don’t understand depression (real, serious depression), you don’t understand mental illness and you’re exposing your ignorance. Everyone don’t gotta be a glorifier of the suited hustle-and-bustle world and fundamentally struggle with empathy. The world needs shrinks, counsellors and empathetic people more than it needs more runners-up for Wall Street and a career that’s more interesting on LinkedIn paper than in reality. And serious depression is almost worse than cancer.
Again, it all comes down to this issue of people lightening and trivialising the word “depression” and thinking it’s a pedestal for people with ‘fake’ issues and minor day-to-day anxieties of life to jump on for sympathy or attention on social media. Severe depression is a completely different kettle of fish and one of the most horrible illnesses someone can have. Often psychotic. In any case way beyond just needing to hit the gym more and remember that other people have it worse than them. You can find that out for yourself if you visit an ECT ward or generally just come close-up to someone suffering with severe depression. Even mild depression, the next step from that is often suicide or at least heart-attack. And that ain’t no joke.
So people really need to stop saying they have “depression and anxiety” or lumping them together too much. It lightens the true meaning of depression, undermines its potential severity and … ya. Plus there are plenty of disorders chilling (or not chilling) in the neighbourhood of “anxiety” so if you’re trying to go anywhere with that, be more specific. Is it generalised anxiety, social anxiety, agoraphobia or regular panic attacks?
I seriously implore anyone who doesn’t believe in depression to visit an inpatient unit for the severely depressed.
“Suicide shouldn’t even be on your mind if you have money.”
When someone’s literally on death’s door and living in a world of nihilistic delusion it’s not really about how many numbers they have in their bank account. But people who don't know much about heavy depression don’t know how far the train goes inside the bottom-most pits of hell and torture. It really is a horrible set of illnesses. If you say otherwise it’s just because you don’t know what severe or even moderate types of depression look like. Simple.
Again. This re-bump is for the exercise-gurus on Instagram threads whose “controversial take” who think that exercise is a better cure for depression than medication. Let’s have it wall-to-wall about severer forms of depression and see how that approach works.
Also. This notion that talking about something a lot or having a lot of knowledge means that you must be somehow personally affected by it. That might be the case but it might-well not.

I haven't watched in years (with what time?) but I go to a convention every year for Artist Alley. So I've no idea the current state of anime... I'm old enough to have downloaded new episodes subbed by volunteers through IRC channels full of Fserves... the current state of J-pop though... sigh...
Hub watched Spy x Family though and keeps trying to force a thumbdrive with it at me to watch it...
Edit: Rethinking, I do watch Cdrama, but it's an easier binge and sometimes mostly in longer clips. It's hard to follow anything with subtitles.

I would say with modern Anime that it's decent still in general, but it's lacking that killer edge Anime if that makes sense?
Because even American Live Action has Shogun as an epic tale, and Fallout for that zany vibe that can be good in it's own way.
Where as a lot of current Animes have the depth of a puddle.
Having said that I haven't watched Spy x Family, but it does look like the kind of Anime that I'm kind of talking about being a negative for the industry imo.

It’s your local. Show it some respec. if you still want it to stand a chance of being around in 10 years. Don’t complain about the pub being dead throughout the week but also contribute to the problem when you’re burning the little leftover pennies you have elsewhere.
My package came (finally) today. One day shy of a month. Of course it was damaged, it looked like it got bent in a corner from the machine sorter. Thankfully the mat I needed the most on the inside could be bent into mostly perfect flatness and it's just a minor kink. The other one has actual indent, but I think it could be fine with some convincing+heat... even better the label was their "advantage" ground service, so it should've been here on time. So someone done goofed.

Waiters coming round to check how your food is. I know it's well intentioned but I swear they always time it so you have a gobfull of food in your mouth when they ask, you either have to risk answering with your mouth full or deal with them staring at you as you chew and swallow before replying
In all my years I also don't think I've given any other reply but 'yeah fine thanks'
Also typically they ask when your meal is at least half eaten... my usual answer is "trust me, if I had a problem with my meal I would not be waiting for you to ask!" but I do try to temper the abruptness with a half-smile....

Just putting this out there for anyone who thinks depression is a mild mental illness. Try visiting an ECT ward where there are people with Cotard’s syndrome hallucinating hell fire and believing they don’t exist, that the Earth’s been sucked into an existence-sucking vacuum, all-the-while without having eaten for a month. This is what we talk about when we say severe depression. I can’t stress that enough. There’s a difference between ‘mild depression and anxiety x’ that’s at a level where ignorant people believe they can just pull themselves out of it and all the difference shades of serious, endogenous depression that’s moderate to severe. The first type of depression is the type that the general public who have no idea how severe it can be at the other end of the spectrum understand it. That’s almost nothing compared to real depression. Even the next step from mild depression is suicide, and people feeling like they want to out themselves should absolutely be given love and support, but for those who stay alive it doesn’t end there. Likewise, at one end of the depressive-treatment regime-spectrum is citalopram and at the other end is tranylycpromine and ECT. There’s a massive range of types, symptoms and severities and the treatment reflects that.
And I’m never gonna be fully rested on this topic until ignorance about depression is fully squished out. Educate people on the severity of it and not just the fact that talking helps and it’s not just a matter of willpower. So it is worth repeating.

The person just ignores you after accusing you of something that you don't believe yourself to be.

Right.
Happen to you recently, did it?

You could certainly say that.
What about you, have you experienced anything similar recently?

Erm. I suppose I have been in the position where it’s been my word against someone-else’s and I haven’t been fully believed but that was quite a few months ago now. It wasn’t super-recent.
Ultimately it was about something very trivial. Nothing that deep, but either way I still wasn’t fully believed, whatever happened next.

Okay, I can understand that as I have experienced that recently.
I'm still okay with the person, but I won't tolerate that behaviour towards me again.
When articles have loads and loads of ads and you can't even read the page properly or prevent yourself from accidentally clicking on an ad!!! And some of them you can't even x out of the way anymore!

The amount of unnecessary cutaways on Family Guy can be hella annoying, still.

“Yeah, I thought he was black, still; just with one white parent, innit.”
Abeg, black is black and mixed race is mixed race. They are not the same thing at all. When you’re 3/4 black it’s a different story but when you’re exactly 50-50, that’s what you are. A lot of purely white people do it as a subconscious relic from the one-drop rule principle, which is inherently racist. You won’t accept them as your own so of course they have to be black. Same goes for quadroons (and by extension probably even octoroons, people who are only 1/8 black) who look closer to mixed race than black being forced by white people to identify as black. So racist. So inherently, disgustingly racist and white hegemonic. Many more people than you know are mixed with something/have backgrounds that are somewhat or at least a little heterogenous. What they choose to identify as is a very personal, individual thing. Mixed-race people are not inherently black just because the average white person says so. Having a Jamaican great-aunt and a like of plantain doesn’t inherently mean “yeah, you’re basically black”.
Anyway, that one ain’t a little ting.

Tbf, there are some mixed race people out there that do like to identify as black.
To me I just like to try and focus on the person rather than on the colour of their skin, unless it's under a scenario where I have to describe the person's appearance.

Loads of people consider themselves to be black if they have one parent though - their choice I suppose

You beat me to it although I wrote this about 4 hours ago and didn’t press REPLY. I initially thought my post had been deleted …

I'm quite chill really, most things wash over me. But some little inconsequential things do irk me somewhat, like when people don't end sentences with full stops. Sometimes emojies are used instead ("even" by me!) but leaving the last sentence just hanging looks horrible.

Seriously, Peter Griffin being the protagonist of Family Guy. It’s offensive.

The end of Lily Allen’s “Interlude”. What’s that about?
I bought two very nice (and light!) 48oz water bottles to apply name decals to for my inlaws who are coming to visit soon. I saw them on clearance and thought that would be a good idea for them while they were here. Anyway, I go to peel back the labeling which is substantial and it's CAKED in adhesive... so now I"m sitting here to roll it away with my thumb and it's very annoying. I'll have to clean it really good before I can apply the vinyl...

Ali, you had the opportunity to say to Lily up-front that you (along-wit. t. rest of t’house) find her screaming annoying. Why lie to her face after saying you were gonna talk to her (regardless of nominations)?
