Big-ting: the fact that we live in an era where some people would seriously rather film someone having a stroke and put it on TikTok than actually try and help them.

Igbos (and Calabars, and Deltans for that matter) generally cook better than Yorubas, but this insistence so many Igbos have of believing all types of jollof rice are created equally when it comes to being receptive to crayfish is a bit west, still. (If you know, you know.)

When people conflate ignorance from ignorant people in the general public with clinical reality.

“We didn’t call ’em panic attacks back-in the ’90s.” Yes, we did. Officially, medically. Maybe not at the pub on a drunken Friday night, builders’ assemble or on the playground.

“Well, we didn’t call it bipolar in my day.” No. We called it manic-depressive illness and before that (before your grandparents were born) circular insanity. And so-on. People have been observing and writing about it since the beginning of time. There’s nothing new about mental health.

And do you use a combination of beef and pork?

The worst bolognese I’ve ever made was one with turkey mince. Turkey definitely doesn’t help with the profile but a certain amount of pork (if you like/can eat pork) definitely goes a long way.

Anything you’d normally use minced beef for but probably more-especially certain curries. It’s low-fat and tastes accordingly, for better or worse.

The bolognese I made with it wasn’t terrible for what it was but what it wasn’t was anything like a bolognese should taste like, not to me. But then one of my least-favourite people (a nasty so-and-so from Wrexham) ate it. Looking back that puts a wry smile on my face. He didn’t deserve better. I’m glad he never got to eat a really good spag.-bol. from me.

Whenever you complain about something more old-fashioned being better and you get one of these three responses.

1. "It's of it's time" - So? If said thing is better than the "current" thing, how about we go back to the better old-fashioned method?

2. "You're just being a boomer" - Obviously doesn't really make for a good debate.

3. "You just have to learn to lower your standards" - Why should I?

And obviously I'm saying that everything modern is worse because that's quite dumb, but it's almost taboo in society to admit that some modern stuff has really poor quality standards to them, that I don't believe would've been acceptable back as recently as a decade ago.

Recent Eurovision Seasons leaning too heavily into autotuned Dance tracks.

Don't get me wrong some of them can be catchy, but this year in particular looks like we're going to have a whole host of uptempo Dance-y kind of numbers in the Semis and possibly the final.

As it stands, I really hope that one of Lithuania, Serbia, Greece, or Albania win as they have more distinct styles by the year's standard.

I obviously hope that the UK tries to avoid the Dance genre this year, as it will make us standout.

I kind of relate to this. People talk about coming up under COVID as though it were like living in the shadow of 9/11 with the war on terror, and Afghanistan raging and whatnot. The latter is something I can identify with. But idk, I just don't feel any real connection to people who talk about COVID in those terms. Not even necessarily saying they're wrong to do so, but for me COVID wasn't something that ever reached the level of cultural zeitgeist. Owing to being furloughed and not particularly minding staying indoors more, for me it was just something annoying happening in the background that you kind of just had to deal with.

The pandemic was a real blessing for a lot of introverts, too (those of us who thankfully didn’t lose loved ones to Covid anyway). More time and space to do what we do best (think and introspect, review the social connections we do cultivate and the depth of them, solitary hobbies like writing and baking banana-bread). That plus the fact that the year right before Covid, 2019, was among the worst of my life. Nothing throughout most of the first 3/4 of 2020 was that bad, and when it was it was for reasons that had sod-all to do with Covid.

2012 did have some decent numbers still imo.

Songs like Take Me To Church, Gangnam Style, Hall Of Fame, and speaking of Rihanna she did release Diamonds in that year.

I agree that it's not the greatest year for chart Music, but it's a damn sight better than any of the years in the 2020's imo.

1. The fact that so-many people don’t seem to be aware of the link between alcoholism and mental illness. It’s inevitable that someone like Phil Mitchell would develop a depressive illness eventually off the back of all-that, whether he’s a thug or not. That wasn’t even who Phil was before 2000.

2. https://youtu.be/c-EUR4E33G4?si=K7AB3_Zf0BK-XQl_ | https://youtu.be/hgO_6Oni-RA?si=2sNxMHs9ryPQvZss | https://youtu.be/fwI63rMfKNs?si=3AUlFarspEEVcBso | https://www.youtube.com/live/5W377hlEbrE?si=zI-oTwqf3ogsmPSN

^ the fact that America and Canada are light years ahead of the U.K. when it comes to using ketamine and psychedelics medicinally for mental health conditions. The British Isles (although ketamine’s offered for treatment-resistant depression privately, still) still has a very backwards approach to these things and thinks that all your non-clinical problems can be solved with a good-ol. pint or glass of white. Any and every situation seems to call for a drink.

We like alcohol too, too, too much in this part of the world. It’s the furthest thing from a healthy coping mechanism.

“Bipolar is just random mood swings, innit?”

“Delirious Mania.
The transition to delirious mania is marked by the appearance of confusion, more hallucinations, and a marked intensification of the symptoms seen in acute mania. A dreamlike clouding of consciousness may occur. Patients may mistake where they are and with whom. They cry out that they are in heaven or in hell, in a palace or in a prison; those around them have all changed—the physician is an executioner; fellow patients are secret slaves. Hallucinations, more commonly auditory than visual, appear momentarily and then are gone, perhaps only to be replaced by another. The thunderous voice of God sounds; angels whisper secret encouragements; the devil boasts at having the patient now; the patient’s children cry out in despair. Creatures and faces may appear; lights flash and lightning cracks through the room. Grandiose and persecutory delusions intensify, especially the persecutory ones. Bizarre delusions may occur, including Schneiderian delusions. Electrical currents from the nurses’ station control the patient; the patient remains in a telepathic communication with the physician or with the other patients.
Mood is extremely dysphoric and labile. Though some patients still are occasionally enthusiastic and jolly, irritability is generally quite pronounced. There may be cursing, and swearing; violent threats are made, and if patients are restrained they may spit on those around them. Sudden despair and wretched crying may grip the patient, only to give way in moments to unrestrained laughter.
Flight of ideas becomes extremely intense and fragmented. Sentences are rarely completed, and speech often consists of words or short phrases having only the most tenuous connection with the other. Pressure of speech likewise increases, and in extreme cases the patient’s speech may become an incoherent and rapidly changing jumble. Yet even in the highest grades of incoherence, where associations become markedly loosened, these patients remain in lively contact with the world about them. Fragments of nearby conversations are interpolated into their speech, or they may make a sudden reference to the physician’s clothing or to a disturbance somewhere else on the ward.
Hyperactivity is extreme, and behavior disintegrates into numerous and disparate fragments of purposeful activity. Patients may agitatedly pace from one wall to the other, jump to a table top, beat their chest and scream, assault anyone nearby, pound on the windows, tear the bed sheets, prance, twitter, or throw off their clothes. Impulsivity may be extreme, and the patient may unexpectedly commit suicide by leaping from a window.
Self-control is absolutely lost, and the patient has no insight and no capacity for it. Attempting to reason with the patient in delirious mania is fruitless, even assuming that the patient stays still enough for one to try. The frenzy of these patients is remarkable to behold and rarely forgotten. Yet in the height of delirious mania, one may be surprised by the appearance of a sudden calm. Instantly, the patient may become mute and immobile, and such a catatonic stupor may persist from minutes to hours only to give way again to a storm of activity. Other catatonic signs, such as echolalia and echopraxia and even waxy flexibility, may also be seen.”

Delirious mania says hi.

Can't decide which is worst-X or IG. IG people only post the best edits of their life, making others feel inferior or perhaps that they have to document their life more and X is literally a pit of hell where the worst of the worst gather and make everyone privy to their inner darkest thoughts every hour. The amount of racism, degrading, mocking, blasphemy whatever you can think of it happens in X. People arguing all day. I hate them both. I wish Steve Jobs never had this idea. I wish he left well enough alone. I was happier before being privy to people's thoughts. At least before we could live in some kind of ignorant bliss with only an idea of how bad it is not actually seeing how bad it is

…strangely I’m only just expanding out more into Social Media because of a different job role…when I was working at the school it was always just the best option for me not to have it as it can create so much that I just wouldn’t want to get involved in../…plus school policies etc…I have IG which I like because I can ‘catch up’ through photographs with people I know who live overseas or long distances…it doesn’t bother me in any negative way because I do know that those ‘perfect life’ pics are just life in pose and snapshot, you know…it doesn’t represent a life being lived as such, it only represents nice images and that hasn’t been any different to looking through an album of photographs that have been posed back in the day etc…

…I don’t have X but I’ve recently just got FB because I’ve moved to a different area and it’s really useful for building up all kinds of contacts in the area of things going on…so many local groups have guided me in the right way and to the right people when I’ve needed it…and the marketplace has been useful as well…so I guess that I just go on for a purpose and then just come off again…but I understand it’s not possible to always use it like that…why not take a social media break for a few days or a week or so…that might be all you need to press your own refresh button…?…

I’d just be pissed if I couldn’t buy my Red Stripe or bottle of Lambrini because the owner got pushed into leaving a kid who should be preparing for her GCSE mocks behind the counter all alone.

Oooo i really agree with this. I have met some foul people working in the NHS. People always imagine nurses are like angels... Hmmm... Hell's Angels, some of them. When my grandmother fell ill before she died, we removed her from the Norfolk & Norwich hospital because their elderly care is positively Third World. In fact, the Third World has more respect for their elders probably. We were lucky to be able to go private when my children were born, I remember the excruciating horror show my sister in law endured when my nieces were born and I had no faith in the NHS. And another thing... We're always being told the nation has an obesity problem but SO MANY nurses are enormous. And they think people are going to be advised by them. Dog-owners letting their dogs invade people’s personal-space boundaries and come up to them, thinking that everyone’s a dog-person. For all you know, the random person walking past could’ve been attacked by a dog as a kid, their baby might’ve, they might be allergic or they just-plain might not like dogs. All-those reasons are just fine. It’s on owners to know that not everyone’s comfortable with dogs.

In some cases people self diagnose because they can't get to see a doctor in our Third World healthcare system. There is virtually no chance of an adult being tested for ADHD, autism etcunder the NHS. When you see someone in the news who is an adult and has been diagnosed with autism or ADHD they are invariably celebrities who have got their diagnosis privately.

Certain conditions (like misophonia) have to be self-diagnosed and people suffering becoming their own passionately best advocates, pharmacologists, experts, because the system hasn’t made diagnostic room for them yet and even specialists don’t necessarily have a clue, despite the fact that it’s not as unusual condition as one might think. People in those situations just have to claim agency in the face of institutional neglect and non-acknowledgement. So I do get the validity of genuine, well-informed self-diagnosis. I’m the last person in the world to overlook that. But the way things like autism and ADHD specifically are concerned, it’s just going way too far. Every 1 in 2 people claims to be neurodivergent these days, and all these people can’t be officially diagnosed.

Simplifying the layers of someone’s hometown, or even labouring under the illusion that they can only have one, is just … not the way to go.

Someone’s hometown can be as much Cairo as it is Newham. Toxteth as much as Montegro Bay. Especially with those areas being quite multicultural anyway. They’re not abandoning their Egyptian, Jewish or Jamaican identity by making that known. They could just as well be saying that their diaspora communities have enhanced their cultural identity all-the more. Either way, it’s not to go attacking someone like a pack of hounds because they used “hometown” in a somewhat double-faceted way. They’ll have their reasons and context of lived experiences within the confines of what they’re talking about. And you can’t take that away from them, no-matter how much you try to gatekeep one culture or the other in monoculture type of way. Claiming multiple hometowns is just not a betrayal of heritage. You shouldn’t have to strip your identity of nuance to be accepted by everyone. It’s not going to work like that in a migratory, globalised world anyway.

People who make personality-pervading judgements about people based on nothing but their vis-a-vis social demeanour, especially when they’ve only ever seen the person in motion with people that they’re not terribly comfortable with. You’re obviously not going to see the real them when more of their personality is directed inwards rather than outwards and they’re not even comfortable to begin with. Comfort is everything for the average introvert. Mistaking situational awkwardness or silence with someone’s whole personality is never a good thing. Still waters run deep. And there’s often a world of immense emotional and intellectual depth beneath the surface. You just need to get to know them in themselves, and some people never will, because they never utilised the opportunity to. You … don’t get to see it in random passing or from the undifferentiated outside looking in. You get it through time, trust, comfort, nuance and maybe the odd questionnaire or two on Snapchat. Otherwise your knowledge of them might be 0.1% and nowt more. It always pays to respect the complexity of the inner world.

As-if strolling past bins and closed shops, and the odd ugly mouse in the corner, is going to even touch the sides of a particular kind of existential entrapment and hollow time-stretching Sunday brings. A walk might boost the mood for all of 3 minutes but then that’s it.

People who think advertising Shilajit and Trip on their TikTok showcase makes up for a lack of a decent, likeable personality. You’re not an influencer. You’re a walking affiliate link, selling vibes because they’ve got no value. The people of integrity who you’re looking up to on that front, consciously or from an undercurrent-imprint from 4/5 years ago, bask in better Sea Moss and magnesium glycinate every minute and they’ve been where you are but with their heads more screwed on a billion times. Their quiet Friday-night peace is serene, squeaky-clean and unmatched, something an aesthetic-with-no-ethics person couldn’t even half-match in a trillion lifetimes, whether they’re 27, 19 or 80. You can’t compete with integrity in self-betterment. Especially if you’re a narcissist.

What the person of integrity sees lying down with their eyes closed a clout-Chad couldn’t see on top of Mount-Everest with 20/20 HD-vision. You can try but it’ll never be as good or authentic. It’s like comparing white rice with mayonnaise that’s trying to be woke with the addition of a few mint-leaves and two slices of avocado to maple-and-opepe-smoked jollof-coconut rice basking in supreme bottom-pot vibes, venison, goose, juicy turkey, deer-liver, aptly-proportioned flamingo and steamed amaranth for sides. Their nourishment comes from entirely within themselves, when they’re doing it right. It’s as clear-cut as that.

If the clout-vitaminista is genuinely a good person in themselves and has qualities to bring to the table that in some shape might better society (or at-least have them standing firm in their morale, with nobody getting hurt as a result of them), okay. Cool. But being into chakra energy (a prey-niche of narcissists) and … “omG try ashwaganda” doesn’t make you interesting, cool or a good person when your soul is permanently rotten. So don’t bother, chad. You’re nothing. A complete waste of space with a foul soul to boot. Rot in hell.

Chinyere (nee All Nigerian Recipes) emphasising so much why jollof rice shouldn’t burn at the bottom, even stating original, as-opposed to regular (which apparently burns easier), stainless steel pots as her preference. Even if there is a subtle line between bottom-pot-burnt and genuinely smoky, there’s no reason, when the vibe fits, for both to coincide, and there’s even a scientific reason behind why certain foods taste better towards the bottom of the pot. Other cultures do it often enough. And at the end of the day Flo.’s a scientist, so that empirical backing behind bottom-pot (rice) should appeal to her nature. Avoiding the Mallard reaction isn’t what inherently makes someone a better cook of jollof rice than someone-else.

I’ll tell ya over PM but it’s for the same thing I used it for 11-ish years ago. It worked then but my body’s just outgrown it.

Someone said to me once that people who sweat a lot (like me; my hyperhidrosis is a mad ting) could benefit from propranolol but I think that’s only in the case whose excessive sweating is, like, a peripheral manifestation of anxiety. For people with primary hyperhidrosis (like moi), beta blockers don’t seem to be the answer. Atenolol (another beta-blocker), again, did nothing for me in the sweat-department, but then I only took so much of that. Maybe if I was on the maximum dose or something closer to it I would’ve benefited from it in that regard but if propranolol didn’t work, I don’t see how atenolol would. There’s a beta-blockers called pindolol which, for various reasons, seems like it would suit me a lot better than either of the other two beta-blockers but it’s scarcely available in the UK. That’s my problem.

I may have said this before but the fact that the nearest Waitrose as far as Liverpool’s concerned is in Chester is really, really annoying. Gateacre’s an affluent enough area and yet in place of what should’ve been a Waitrose is an Aldi. Not a bad Aldi by any means but I guarantee you the average person from the posh parts of south Liverpool (Woolton, Childwall, Gateacre, Mossley Hill, Allerton, Grassendale, certain parts of Halewood) is more Waitrose-than-Aldi-inclined. If there was a Waitrose in one of those areas, it could quietly become a community-touchstone for local idealists, foodies and discerning introverts, whenever they can afford it.

I’ve never heard of “happiest of birthdays” but I prefer it to ‘happy birthday’ as that phrase just annoys me as there’s rarely any emotion attached to it .., especially said the day after

It's usually on FB rather than in real life, i don't know why it just gets under my skin

When people say "happiest of Birthdays" or "love you lots jelly tots"

…love you loads frogs and toads…

…one of my girls does say love you to the moon and back every time she texts…
