CORRIE legend Jack Duckworth is moving out of Weatherfield - but bosses have reassured fans he will not be leaving the show.

Actor Bill Tarmey, 68 - who has played Jack for 30 years - is cutting back on acting after health problems.

Viewers will see pigeon-fancier Jack move out of the house he shared with late wife Vera (Liz Dawn) - and into the plush digs of millionaire new love Connie Rathbone (Rita May) in the fictional suburb of Middleton.

Bill made the decision to cut back on his role after talks with Coronation Street supremo Kim Crowther.

But the star will remain in the ITV1 soap, popping back to film scenes in the Rovers Return and Roy's Rolls.

He suffered a major heart attack in 1976 and had bypass surgery in 1986.

After a second heart attack in 2002 he had a pacemaker fitted - and still smokes despite doctors' advice.

Bill also recently admitted his hearing difficulties cause problems during filming.

He said: "Deafness creeps up on you. It's starting to get a bit embarrassing on set."

The star's poignant leaving scenes mark the end of the Duckworth dynasty in Weatherfield - and are bound to pull in a huge audience.

Viewers will see Jack depart the cobbles with Vera's ashes tucked under his arm.

Following his wife's death from a sudden heart attack last year, Jack sold the house to his lodger Tyrone Dobbs but continued to live there.

Even after Tyrone married sweetheart Molly (Vicky Binns) earlier this year, the newlyweds assured him that the place would always be Jack's home.

While he clears the house of his possessions, Jack takes a trip down memory lane as he leafs through photograph albums of Vera, their wayward son Terry and their grandchildren.
Moving

In a moving tribute to Vera, Jack says to himself: "Well Vee, I suppose this is it.

"Everybody knows we had more than our share of ups and downs between these walls. But we were happy here until you decided to sneak off to heaven before closing time. It's not like Connie will ever replace you.

"You know that don't you, my little puddle-duck? Aye, I'm sure you do."

Jack then places the urn containing Vera's ashes under one arm and his stuffed pigeon Fergie under the other - and takes a last, emotional look at his old home.

He then bids a tearful farewell to Tyrone, telling him: "Twenty-one years of married life me and our Vera spent here.

"They were happy days most of them. Not all of them but most. But I know I'm leaving the house in good hands."

As they hug, a sobbing Tyrone says: "Bye, Jack. I'll miss you."

In his final words, Jack replies: "Aye, lad - me and all. Take care. Bye for now."

But Corrie bosses have stressed they are planning for the character to keep making one-off appearances in the future.

During his farewell pint of Newton and Ridleys in the Rovers, Jack tells old friend Rita Sullivan (Barbara Knox): "I'll try to pop back now and again.

"Because as long as this place still sells beer... I'll still be wanting to drink it."

CORONATION Street's Rita Sullivan is to quit running the Kabin - after 36 years behind the counter.

The pensioner, played by Barbara Knox, will announce her retirement at Ramsey Clegg's wake in the Rovers Return.

2009 ... Colin proposes to Rita

2009 ... Colin proposes to Rita

ITV

Rita came into Corrie in 1964 and started managing the newsagents in 1973 for Len Fairclough (Peter Adamson), who she married four years later. An insider said: "It's a massive change for the face of Coronation Street. Rita has been selling cigarettes, organising papers and gossiping with customers for decades.

Jack moves on ... TV Biz on Wed 15th

Jack moves on ... TV Biz on Wed 15th

"She is one of the soap's biggest characters."

Business partner Norris Cole (Malcolm Hebden) and Emily Bishop (Eileen Derbyshire) are first to know, with Rita breaking the news as she thinks about Ramsey (Andrew Sachs).

She tells them: "His death made me think about why I'm working at the shop when I don't need to. I'm fed up of working, I'm going to retire. I know I've said it before but this time I mean it and I won't be changing my mind."

Norris is sure to try to persuade her to sell her share of the business to him.

Yesterday TV Biz revealed that Jack Duckworth, played by Bill Tarmey, 68, is moving out of his home on Coronation Street after 25 years. This allows bosses to explain his breaks from the ITV1 soap.

Rita's onscreen retirement will also leave the door open for fresh faces.

1985 ... Rita with Alf Roberts

1985 ... Rita with Alf Roberts

ITV

And Tina McIntyre (Michelle Keegan), at the shop for six months, will get an increased role. A source said: "The character of Tina works well, and bosses are keen to make her a central player."

The Kabin has always been one of the hubs on the Street. It was there Alf Roberts used to lust after Rita in the 1980s - and it was where foster daughter Sharon Gaskell had a surprise reunion with mum Rita in 1999.

Rita was recently proposed to in the Rovers Return by the late Colin Grimshaw, played by Edward De Souza.

The decision to retire her from the Kabin could see the scaling down of 75-year-old Barbara's role as ITV cuts costs. Only William Roache, who plays Ken Barlow, and Eileen Derbyshire have been in the soap longer.

I like Rita, they better not scale her character down.

What a bloody farce the show is turning into - 'scaling down' Amber, I bet shes axed soon enough. Minnie isn't used enough, shes brilliant. I really LOVE Natasha and hope she gets a bigger role too.

They want to keep Amber, Natasha, Minnie, and keep Rita at her role as it is now - dont scale it down.

They practically axe Amber yet sign Kirk up for another year, WTF hes the most useless character I have ever seen, and Fizz is becoming more and more useless with her current storyline - although I like Jennie McAlpine.

Agree with everything you say and like you, I do have a soft spot for Jennie McAlpine.
I think Corrie will be overhauled soon as they can't continue with the rubbish they've had recently. I think they need to stop going for sensationalised storylines like Tony Gordon which boost ratings in the short term, but rather work on re-building the cast and making better use of the characters which will give the show long term success. Corrie is by far the best soap imo but really hasn't been up to scratch for a while now.
Also I think they need to stop the panto; Uncle Umed gets on my wick.
I hate to be negative but I had to get that off my chest :spin2:

Scarlett.
16-07-2009, 12:21 AM
Rita's is being scaled down due to one reason...she is getting on in age, she cant continue doing so many scenes

flemin
16-07-2009, 12:24 AM
I don't blame her for scaling down, the amount of hours they work must be exhausting. I'll just miss seeing her as often :(

Yeah, I'm glad she is still gonna be around though, same with Jack :)

flemin
16-07-2009, 12:28 AM
Why are they scaling down Amber's role though? I know she's going to uni but as a result Darrel's been axed and I really thought they both had potential.

I thought so too, but its because it was said soaps should have a Uni storyline :3

That's what I think too. I think it's been going downhill steadily since 2006/7ish but has risen in quality for brief periods like from August to December 2008. It does seem to be getting better though and last Friday's episode was the best in ages imo.

Tablod reports today suggesting that Rita Sullivan (Barbara Knox) is quitting her Coronation Street workplace The Kabin - and the soap - are untrue.

Barbara's very much staying with the show and with its 50th anniversary just around the corner, why wouldn't she?

In a September storyline, Rita announces her intention to retire and decides to sell her share of the business to Norris (Malcolm Hebden), who owns the other part.

Her decision is part of a comedy storyline and Rita's retirement doesn't last long at all - she's back where she belongs in no time.

Mind you, I wouldn't believe all the soapy hype in the papers - the same tabloid also claimed that Betty Williams (Betty Driver) was to lose her job behind the bar at The Rovers. At the time it sounded a permanent move but it lasted all of one episode. Talk about making a mountain out of a molehill.

Corrie fans will soon be able to see 360-degree images of the famous Street as it becomes the first ever TV soap set to feature on Google Street View.

The Google Street View car has been driven down the cobbles to capture pictures for its virtual maps, so you will soon be able to see the Street as you've never seen it before.

To celebrate the relaunch of this new Corrie website, the soap's producers threw open the gates to the set for the special car with camera equipment on its roof, making it the first TV soap ever to do so.

The pictures captured by the car will now be processed and carefully stitched together to create a 360-degree view of the famous Street. The technological process can take several months so they will be made available at a later date. We'll let you know when.

A Corrie spokesman said: “Thanks to Street View, fans will be able to have a good nose around the set in a way that would have been unimaginable almost 50 years ago when the show first aired. “

FURIOUS Steve McDonald gets to grips with his wife's drug-dealing ex Slug in a hard-hitting new Corrie storyline.
Steve (Simon Gregson) is so sick of the waster hanging round his missus he kidnaps him. He and pal Lloyd (Craig Charles) tie up Slug - Ashes To Ashes star Marshall Lancaster - and bundle him into a wedding limo's boot.

The pair drive to wasteland where they haul out the crook who planted drugs on Steve's wife Becky (Katherine Kelly).

Slug's fate will be revealed in the ITV1 scenes next month.

Coronation Street producers have announced that they are recasting the role of Gail Platt's eldest son Nick Tilsley.

The 28-year-old character, who was previously played by Adam Rickett, will return to the cobbles later in the year as a new actor takes on the part.

Following a relationship with Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson), Nick left for Canada in 2002 and briefly returned for his mother Gail's (Helen Worth) wedding to Richard Hillman (Brian Capron).

His next return came in in September 2003, during which Todd Grimshaw (Bruno Langley) attempted to kiss him in what was Coronation Street's first gay clinch.

When his on-off relationship with Maria (Samia Smith) broke down, Nick was last seen leaving the Street in a taxi to start a new life and job in Nottingham. Since his departure, he has been referenced in scripts by his family on numerous occasions.

A Corrie spokesperson said: "It will be great to see the return of Nick, he has so many links with the street - both with his family and also with the various women he has had relationships with."

They added: "It will be interesting to see how Leanne and Maria will react to his return and of course David has never really got on with his stepbrother so there will be some fireworks there."

Rickett can currently be seen in New Zealand-based soap Shortland Street. He previously embarked on a brief pop career before being approved as a prospective candidate of the Conservative Party.

Last week, it was claimed that producers are lining up Tina O'Brien for a return as Nick's sister Sarah-Louise Platt.

Ryan Thomas, who plays Jason Grimshaw, recently revealed his desire for his screen brother Bruno Langley to make a comeback.

ITV Studios commissioned to create content based on UK soap.

The content will initially be online-only at www.itv.com/corrie in the form of cast interviews, backstage footage and archive clips, in addition to episode summaries, sneak previews and character profile.

However, the Digital Production unit of ITV Studios says it hopes to "further entice users with Corrie-specific mobile downloads and games later in the year".

And by the end of the summer there will also be what ITV calls a 'robust mobile merchandise offering' for www.itv.com/corrie that will include music ringtones, voice ringers and graphics.

Kate Bradshaw, Deputy MD & Head of Online Commissioning at ITV, said: “The new Coronation Street website looks fantastic and it really belongs to ITV.com/Corrie. The exclusive video content is hugely entertaining and carefully branded to complement the official area. This is a significant and exciting example of the way we’re supporting ITV’s biggest shows online.”

ITV has announced it will pilot a brand new online series based on Coronation Street at the official Corrie site.

Street Talk will be hosted by a famous fan and will feature interviews with cast members, on set news, gossip and Corrie previews.

Plus, three video channels will host Cast Talk, with actors talking about current and upcoming storylines, Backstage with behind-the-scenes footage and Video Vault showcasing classic Corrie moments. Later this summer ITV will also release mobile downloads including Corrie ringtones, graphics and games.

It all sounds good to this Corrie fan, and if I may say it, about flaming time too.

Corrie gets new boozer after 50 years

Thu Jul 30 10:52AM by TV Editor

The Rovers Return is to get a rival for the first time in almost 50 years.

The fictional boozer has gone unchallenged since Corrie launched back in 1960, however, this autumn will see a new bar open on the same street for the first time, reports The Sun.

Peter Barlow is behind the venture, which aims to lure the more discerning drinker with upmarket food and a cellar full of quality wine.

The bookie asks on-off girlfriend Leanne to help him run the business and even plans to sell off his betting shop to raise money for the bar.

However, not everyone thinks it's a good idea for recovering alcoholic Peter to open a boozer and the storyline will see him clash with his father Ken over the new venture.

A Coronation Street insider told the paper: "Peter wants his venture to be a flash eatery that will be Weatherfield's 'place to be'."

We're assuming that means there'll be no place for Betty and her hot pots in this bar.

What do you think of this latest storyline? Does Corrie need a bit of a shake-up as it approaches its 50th anniversary? Let us know...

David Platt's luck is about to change as he gets himself a gorgeous new girlfriend.

Corrie bosses have cast actress Kirsty-Leigh Porter to play David’s new girlfriend Zoe. Kirsty-Leigh has previously appeared in shows such as The Street, Doctors and Ashes to Ashes.

On winning the role of Zoe, Kirsty-Leigh told us: “I’m absolutely delighted, me and my family have been lifelong Corrie fans and if possible, I think my mum is even more excited than I am! I can’t wait to start working with Jack (Jack P Shepherd) and the rest of the cast.”

David will meet Zoe after he washes her hair in the salon and invites her to attend Tina and Jason’s housewarming party with him. How will Tina react to David turning up with a new woman in tow? It could certainly be a test of her true feelings towards her ex-boyfriend.

Kirsty-Leigh will begin filming on Wednesday 29 July.

I started to watch Corrie this week after a year of not watching it and it is amazing. :cheer:

Chesney is being a right brat! He used to be so nice, Poor Fiz. I like David when he is Evil so it is perfect now. That Joe is pointless and It is so funny how Jason is on a gay football team and he doesn't know.

Coronation Street's Tony Gordon will ironically ask for Maria Connor's hand in marriage on the first anniversary of her husband Liam's death.

As the pair visit Liam's graveside, Tony - who had Liam (Rob-James Collier) killed in a hit-and-run last year after discovering his affair with his wife Carla (Alison King) - removes his wedding band, before professing his love to new mum Maria.

According to The Sun, he says: "You and the baby are everything I'll ever want for the rest of my life. Marry me, Maria! I want you to be my wife and I want baby Liam to be my son."

Maria - played by 27-year-old Samia Smith - excitedly accepts his proposal, exclaiming: "Yes, yes, of course! Of course I will. Oh Tony, I love you so much."

Before returning to the Street, Maria says her final words to Liam: "You know I'll always remember you, Liam and I'll never forget what we shared together. But I know you'd want me to be happy."

She adds: "So sleep peacefully forever, darling because the time has come for me to let go and move on."

Earlier this year, Tony (Gray O'Brien) delivered Maria's baby son Liam in a beach hut when Maria unexpectedly went into labour while taking a stroll on Southport beach.

However, it is not long before Liam's parents Barry (Frank Grimes) and Helen (Dearbhla Molloy) hear the news of the engagement and Helen quickly blasts her daughter-in-law's decision, saying: "You're widowed only 12 months and here you are jumping into another man's arms! It's disgusting the way you're rubbing our noses in it - and on the day our beautiful Liam was killed. May you rot in hell!"

The scenes pave the way for Alison King's comeback as Carla Gordon, who fled Weatherfield at the beginning of the year after a dramatic showdown in Underworld with husband Tony.

In real life, King went on maternity leave and gave birth to her first daughter Daisy Mae with boyfriend Adam Huckett in February.

Smith will also head off on maternity leave at the beginning of October following the announcement that she is expecting her first baby with husband Matt.

A shocked Gail (Helen Worth) takes photos of David’s injuries for the police. David (Jack P Shepherd) reckons it was Joe (Reece Dinsdale) who beat him up but Gail’s upset and doesn’t know what to think. Joe eventually arrives home, having spent the night in his van, and he’s shocked at the state of David, swearing to Gail he had nothing to do with it. Tina (Michelle Keegan) meanwhile is horrified at David’s injuries and asks him what time he was attacked, the nature of her questions make David realise that Tina thinks Jason was responsible and he’s furious. Tina confronts Jason but Jason swears he never even saw David last night. It is clear Tina doesn’t believe him and it isn’t long before the police turn up at No.11 and arrest Jason on suspicion of assault.

Rita (Barbara Knox) tells Ramsay (Andrew Sachs) how Emily (Eileen Derbyshire) is going to miss him and urges him to stay in Weatherfield. This has given him food for thought and he announces to Emily and Rita he’s decided to stick around and is going to put an offer in on a flat in Victoria Court. Emily’s delighted.

Gail and Joe have a heart to heart after the situation with David. They admit they still love each other and agree to give their relationship another go but can it work after everything they’ve been through?

Jesse (John Thomson) tells Eileen (Sue Cleaver) his mother has thrown him out and he’d like to take her up on her offer. Eileen’s pleased but is not so sure what to think when Jesse arrives complete with a parrot called John!

This episode is written by Daran Little and produced by Kim Crowther, the director is Neil Johnston.

***
PI for the rest of the week.
NB. Due to UEFA football the schedules have changed,

Monday 24 August [2]

All the old rivalry comes flooding back as Eileen (Sue Cleaver) and Gail (Helen Worth) row on the street whilst Jason is driven off in a police car. Tina’s furious and, sticking up for Jason (Ryan Thomas), tells Gail and Joe (Reece Dinsdale) how David (Jack P Shepherd)came round to the flat and threatened her. Later Jason’s released as there’s no evidence against him and Tina (Michelle Keegan) apologises for disbelieving him. David is gutted when Jason gets off scot free but he’s shocked when someone else confesses to the beating.

Meanwhile things are looking up for Joe as he tells Gail he’s got a part-time job in a hardware job. Audrey’s (Sue Nicholls) unimpressed but Gail’s pleased he’s making an effort.

Ramsay (Andrew Sachs) accompanies Emily (Eileen Derbyshire) to Ernest’s grave. Ramsay talks about his childhood and it’s clear Emily’s very smitten with him. Once home Ramsay and Emily invite Norris (Malcom Hebdon) to join them for a game of Scrabble. Norris agrees thinking that Ramsay will be leaving for Australia soon and neither Emily nor Ramsey let him in Ramsey’s change of heart!

Ashley (Steven Arnold) tells Claire (Julia Haworth) how Roy (David Neilson) has donated the weekend in Paris which he won as a prize for the charity fete. Claire’s thrilled and tries to lure Ashley home on a promise but a guilty Ashley takes Graeme (Craig Gazey) home with him to avoid having to tell her about his cancelled vasectomy.

Jesse’s (John Thomson) deeply concerned that John the parrot has taken an instant dislike to Eileen (Sue Cleaver). He tells Eileen that John is usually a very good judge of character – could this be the end of a beautiful relationship?

This episode is written by Simon Crowther and produced by Kim Crowther, the director is Neil Johnston

Thursday 27 August

David (Jack P Shepherd) reluctantly admits to Gail (Helen Worth) that Jason (Ryan Thomas) wasn’t behind the attack but he doesn’t tell her that he knows who the real culprit was. David agrees with Gail that he ought to tell the police he doesn’t think it was Jason. There’s relief at the Grimshaws’ when Jason gets a call from the police telling him he’s in the clear.

Meanwhile David gets a warning from his attacker - they’re quits now and he wants him to stay out of his way in future.

Jesse (John Thomson) tells Eileen (Sue Cleaver) that John the parrot likes to listen to classical music at breakfast time. Eileen’s fast getting fed up with John and his likes and dislikes. Later when Eileen pops home for her lunch John the parrot flies out of his cage and attacks her. A ruffled Eileen tells Jesse that in future the bird stays locked up.

Joe (Reece Dinsdale) finds Tina’s charm bracelet wedged between the floorboards in the flat. Tina’s pleased but wishes she hadn’t accused David of taking it.

Ramsay (Andrew Sachs) shows Norris (Malcom Hedbon) the flat he’s buying in Victoria Court and suggests Norris should move in with him. Norris is horrified at the idea and tells him so. Ramsay begs Norris to forgive him and put their differences behind them but Norris is unyielding. He makes it clear that if Ramsay doesn’t leave then he will. Ramsay packs his bags and leaves for Australia. Emily’s (Eileen Derbyshire) tearful as she watches him go.

Ashley (Steven Arnold) gives up his most treasured possession, his signed Ricky Hatton boxing gloves as the prize for the charity fete. Claire’s (Julia Haworth) touched not knowing guilt has motivated her husband’s generosity.

This episode is written by Chris Fewtrell and produced by Kim Crowther, the director is Neil Johnston
