Deadlock was a shock when Sharon Osbourne used it for the first time, well into the fourth series. IMO it should be used sparingly, and not like last year where it was used almost every single week. This is why an odd numbered judging panel is far better; there is no backing out of being ruthless. It was far tenser when, say Simon and Louis had an act in the bottom two; Sharon had to cast the deciding vote. All of the judges + the acts in the bottom two were put under enormous pressure and it made for better viewing.
Do you guys prefer it when deadlock is used sparingly, or do you think it's better to use it regularly? The obvious advantage of using it is that it prevents acts who didn't come bottom of the voting from going home; but I think the clearest example of the benefit of not using it comes from last year's X Factor when they sent home Jedward over Olly, despite Jedward having more votes... ![]() |

Deadlock is hilarious because of the drama they try to make and then the studio turning red with 'DEADLOCK' on every screen. I remember when the audience burst out laughing one of the first times they did it

I prefer when the judges man up and make a choice. I totally agree with you that it should be used sparingly, only when the acts in question are both equally good/bad.

Dannii's the only one who had the balls to do it last year and send home Jedward
Ironically thought, that cost her the competition ![]()

Yeah, it's just an easy cop-out for the judges now
![]() Although it was annoying when Sharon would spend 10 minutes agonising over who to send home. |

Deadlock is a cop out and total farce. Just get on with it and make a bloody decision. Cowardly dramaqueens.

I can see both sides on this debate, deadlock is overall the likely fairer way, it could be that the act who came last in the voting was well behind in votes, as HOPE(less) always were, it could also be that the act who is 2nd bottom may only have been a few hundred or even just a few votes behind the act 3rd from last.
Perhaps a 5th independent panel member is a good way round the deadlock or just do it on votes from the public totally. Having said that, it would remove the drama from the judges choices to send home but to me its a bit of a pointless exercise anyway, since usually 2 acts are in the last 2 from 2 seperate mentors so half the votes are decided immediately anyway as no judge would vote their own act out. I exclude Simon from that as he voted out his Conway Sisters act that year. Last edited by joeysteele; 06-10-2010 at 04:13 PM. |

Why do they call it a corny name like Deadlock though.
It's like Weakest Link's "sudden death" or Strictly's "dance-off". It's a ****ing tie breaker. |

If you walk with your head down
You can count every step you take I know every place Ive been now I can count every mistake Ive been hurt so many times before Almost forgotten how to dream All that I was running from Is all i need to save me I could'nt let you in my heart My defenses all fall apart Just when I thought I'd given up I have overcome And now I cant let you go, oh no You showed me something that I've never known And finally I've found the one I have overcome ![]() |

alright Simon, cool story.
I just think that Deadlock is such a limp way to end the show each week - the act with the least votes goes home after a ridiculous show of 'drama' for an hour leading up to it. |

I hated how they always relied on Deadlock to the nasty business for them. Especially Simon!

Deadlock rendered the "sing-offs" a complete waste of time.
Bit like Cheryl's judges house stage being pointless. |

There should be 5 judges next year and 5 categories....

and it will be better having an odd number of judges. It will get rid of deadlock.
