Agreed. Consider a 'pudding' to be something in a specific shape... whereas a dessert could be anything like a slice of cake, ice cream, so on.

Pudding is jam roly, suet type puds and heavy sponges.
Anything else is dessert.

I'd sooner use pudding as an umbrella term out of all of those, but I'd probably be more specific before using that word.. like I would just say ice cream or chocolate or whatever.
