Default Crematorium to air funerals on internet

A crematorium will broadcast funerals on the internet.

The Burnley Crematorium in Lancashire claims that the live service will benefit mourners who are unable to attend funerals in person, according to The Mirror.

A spokesman for the council said: "With the video technology, people will be able to register to view a stream of the service from any computer.

"It would mean the proverbial Great Aunt Mabel who emigrated to Australia would be able to view in real time the service for a relative back in Burnley."

Councillor Jeff Sumner added: "It would be an extra optional service, and the firm would only be available via a password-protected site. So only those family and friends with the password would be able to see it."

The service will be implemented later this year, as well as an installation of a large screen and music system outside of the chapel to be used for attendees if there are no seats left inside.

A total of £25,000 ($39,000) is reportedly being spent on these additions.

OMG.

Sounds disrespectful, tacky, pathetic, stupid and altogether sh*t.

I'm sorry - but if someone died in my family, and I was really that close to them - regardless of where on the world I lived, I would make sure I'd get to the funeral or find some decent way to pay my respects, even if it's attending some memorial for them in due course, not ******ing happily sitting in the comfort of my living room in a dressing gown watching the burial of your Grandmother taking place on a computer monitor.

Christ almighty.

Patrick did you read it? It's for people who can't make the wedding, and it has a password

It's a good idea.

Yeah seems like a good idea, if there's an old boy who isn't able to leave the home or a relative on the other side of the world it still gives them a chance to see it, it's not just intended for people who are to lazy to attend lol

I think they would be awfully dull to look at, everyone would be sad or crying and you'd just see a coffin going behind curtains.

It would be good for international use maybe, like for a family member who can't go to the funeral.

And why not, use of the internet shouldnt simply be restricted to schoolboys downloading MILF porn.

At least in this case its being put to a valid genuine use which would be beneficial to some.

Not sure of this at all. Can't make up my mind whether it is a good idea or a ludicrous one.

Those who couldn't attend can watch if they have computers that is? But would you really want to watch it on the net? You might as well instead get a relative or friend at the funeral to get it on camcorder for those who can't attend. Plus password protected means little these days, and more and more stuff gets leaked onto the net places like Youtube. Would you really like such a video of a relative or friend's funeral all over the net if that happened? Then there are the mourners to consider who may not like the idea of their faces being plastered over the net, whether for family and friends to watch or not.

It is a bit weird but overall sounds a good idea for those unable to make it to a funeral due to living on another side of the world, or those who are housebound with a disability etc...

I feel a bit the same I can't really decide if it's ok or not. I think the point of a funeral is to see everyone there, and show ones respects for that person in public. You can't do that on a computer so it seems a bit pointless, but some people might find some use to it I suppose.

I personally don't see it as a bad thing what so ever.

It's got a password and it is protected. If you couldn't make a very important funeral for some reason that is out of your control then you would want to know about the service and how it went as soon as you saw somebody who did go, so why not just give those people who can't come the opportunity to stream it online. It's not a tacky idea, it's for those who really need to be there, if not in person but online. It probably gives the user a more personal experience and the chance to weep and sob in private as well, a comforting environment, because lets face it crematorium's aren't the most enjoyable settings!

I'm pro this.

I think it's a good idea - I think it seems weird because it's not been done before that's all. If it helps bring closure into people's lives and helps them feel they have paid due respect to a loved one then it can only be good.

A total of £25,000 ($39,000) is reportedly being spent on these additions.

Seriously

I think its a good idea tbh

You might have family abroad who cant afford a sudden trip or something, at least this way they can still...'attend'

As long as its not open to everyone(which its not, its password protected), I see no problem with it

You'd be able to fly them all over for cheaper though
