He's not though.

He literally says people like him wouldn't be where they are without those artists who helped knock down barriers and change things for the better that came before them.

He's merely saying there are still barriers that need breaking down.

Much in the same way women have come a long way over the decades but there's still a way to go to achieve real equality and stamp out the homophobia and sexism.
