Why would she leave the boat to go for a swim with the child by himself. Surely she wouldnt have thought oh ill just go for a swim whilst you have a nap.

Also don't understand how you could be entangled in tree at the bottom of a lake. If i was ever swimming a large body of water and felt anything brush against me I'd be straight out of there, not somehow get entangled by it.
