Default When does autumn really start?

No earlier than the second equinox in the year (22 September) or do you start pumpkin-and-Christmas-light-searching immediately after the 12th of August?

It depends what you mean by autumn

Meterologically speaking its 1st sept

Astronomically speaking its the equinox

for many its the first foggy morning or when a tree shows red leaves or the first frost

I'd personally go with it being "when it becomes obvious" - when the leaves start turning, it's Autumn. Likewise with Spring - when stuff starts growing back, it's Spring. I have a little stubby tree in the front garden that gets very "bushy" in summer but looks like a bundle of sticks in winter... I just use that as the gauge.

Well nature like everything else in life is totally beggered .. gardening books may as well be chucked because all the suggested dates are months out of sync..

We’ve still got pigeons making nests and getting jiggy in our back garden.
