I know people often discuss this with foreign language films but does anyone watch films or TV shows with subtitles even when it's your first language?
There was an article the other day about how the younger generation actually watch things with the subtitles on a lot more than older people even though their hearing is usually better. I've actually found myself doing it more and more and think I get a better viewing experience as it ensures I'm more engaged with what's been said and you pick up on things you'd miss otherwise An article supporting it here: https://mashable.com/article/subtitl...vies-streaming Quote:

No definitely not, in fact last night I put on a film and the subtitles were on and I had to turn them off straight away as i found it distracting, you can't help but read them when they pop up and I find it makes me miss actually watching the acting and what's going on in picture, if you get what I mean?

Sometimes accents are thick enough that subtitles just take the strain out of watching though, I remember watching Wind That Shakes the Barley and having no clue what the characters were saying half the time with the Irish accent |

Kinda depends on what I’m watching. If it’s something new then I probably would but if it’s a TV show or movie I’ve seen before then I wouldn’t because I probably have most of the script memorised anyways

Some ITV dramas I have to - especially the police dramas - they all mumble and talk under their breaths!
Hollington Drive was a chore to just decipher. |

If the show has them, they're on. It's a relatively new thing we've started doing over the last couple of years - I'm not exactly sure why it started, although we did start watching more foreign language movies and TV at around that time. It feels "wrong" to have no subtitles now .

I'll do it for most foreign output as I prefer it to the dub.

See I genuinely had no idea that anyone would watch something same language with subtitles till recently, instinctively it seems pretty crazy but I'm starting to convert

a lot of narco series on netflix are subtitled, and i really enjoy them, unfortunately it doesn't allow you to zone out as total concentration is required

If subtitles are available i'll put it on regardless of an English show or American etc , some people are either bad talkers or the accents are hard to understand fully. Also sometimes action/noisy scenes are happening in the show which cuts off dialogue.
