I don't get why people can't just try to be civil with each other.
Do you not see the difference in power between the 2 sides? One side is just asking for acceptance they exist, the other is a majority who refuse to accept it and use their platforms almost exclusively these days, to deny their existence and minimise them. Being civil towards your oppressors wouldn't ever be suggested in any other context.
