I think the difference that I'm trying to say is that GOT had more going on than just who's gonna marry who, from the pilot alone we had the Whitewalkers being established, Daenerys and Viserys being on the other side of the world in hiding from the people from Westeros and slowly gather an army to take Kings Landing back, Bran being shoved out of a window after discovering Incest between Jaime & Cersei (which I remember they had to keep it a secret) but for some reason HOTD acts like incest is the vogue thing to do. And I remember there were just more interesting dynamics being formed in the first few episodes of GOT.
I don't think even in Season 8 would I say that GOT was uneventful.
Edit... I'd also say that GOT had really sharp dialogue that most newer Shows really lack imo.
