I think Jamie Foxxs tweet was pretty ignorant of the condition and unfair towards John Davidson. I do think the BBC are at fault though for not editing out the offensive language (as I believe they did with other things, someone shouting Free Palestine I think was edited out?) And of course it must have been horrible for the 2 presenters to hear that being shouted regardless

Because of that, I think we all need to be careful with language. A word that feels casual to one person can hit someone else in a totally different way, and it’s worth keeping that in mind before we throw it around.

That said, I do think the BBC should’ve handled the broadcast better. If they were already editing out other things — like the “Free Palestine” shout — then leaving in language that could be taken as offensive feels inconsistent. And regardless of intent, it must have been awful for the presenters to hear that shouted at them live.

That’s why this whole situation is so complicated. We can criticise Bafta’s handling of the broadcast, but you also have to recognise that John Davidson didn’t choose to say that word. It was a tic, not intent. Any discussion about accountability has to include that reality too.

People can respond however they feel in the moment, especially when they don't have the full context. That doesn't make them malicious. And Richardson's concerns about how the incident was handled don't automatically mean anyone is making light of John Davidson's diagnosis. The reaction towards both of them feels a bit disproportionate, considering they were responding to a shocking situation, not causing it. If anything, this should be a chance for everyone — including Foxx and Richardson — to learn more about the condition.
