What is the Catholic idea of God then? Is it really that exclusive to Catholicism? Does being a 'Catholic' make the God somehow more real? More plausible? And what is that God anyway. Presumably it's the God of The Bible. That child slaying, city destroying rampant narcissist. What a bastard of a God to believe in, right? I don't want to tell you what you are but Christians - practicing Christians - believe the Bible to be the word of God. They believe in the creation story, they believe the seed of life is sacred, all that sort of thing. You can't really cherry pick the sexy bits and disregard the vast majority of the tract. One of the cornerstones of the Catholic belief is that your leader - the Pope - is infallible. That he is a direct voice of God and he can't be wrong. Believing those kind of things is what makes you a Catholic surely. Not finding the church buildings relaxing to sit in? Of course they don't but you add to their numbers. Imagine if all the millions of Catholics-who-are-not-really-Catholics excommunicated tommorow morning? The Vatican would be embarrased. And I do love watching them get embarrased. |

Most of the essential Catholic beliefs and ideals I agree with fully. But its a few things that I have major issues with. As for the Pope thing yeah I guess I do believe he is God's voice on Earth but the part about him never being wrong is just silly. I think that he can make statements that are divine but not everything he says is God speaking through him. Also I believe in that kind of God yes. But he isn't always a God of hate (sorry to sound like a priest here) but I do think he can be loving. I have to say though when you put it that way it does make me consider switching religion because that makes the Christian God sound awful. I guess you could say I haven't declared myself an agnostic now because the Christian God is the only type of God I've ever really known in depth. I don't know. The whole thing is still really confusing for me lol. ![]()

Catholic, although I rarely go to church, I want to start going again. I believe in God fully but not sure on the idea of heaven and hell.

I don't get it to be honest. You can't be Catholic and not believe in core Catholic beliefs so yeah I am confused. It's like me telling everyone I love bowling, but I hate the whole bit with the ball and the pins. Do you really need to keep calling yourself a Catholic to believe in some of the nicer things the J-Man said about loving one another and all that? It seems weak to define yourself as a Catholic because you love some of the things like respecting one another and turning the other cheek. Are those exclusive to Catholicism? I mean I believe in most of that too but I'm not Catholic. I have a hard time disagreeing with virtually everything Jesus said but I'm still not believing in the story. Quote:

Ok so put it this way: I'm Christian but I have my own set of ideas and beliefs about it and I prefer the whole Catholic mass and that stuff. Hows that? ![]()

It's interesting though ... most people do seem to love the idea of heaven if they are thinking about Christianity and tend to forget about the other place. I remember getting slagged off for 'believing in hell' by Christians during my goth years. The irony was brilliant. I'm happy with mortal life. Have your fun then die. The great thing about being dead is you don't know your dead. Coz your dead. Of course most people who picture the afterlife seem to think of it as this place where they can play pool with historical characters in the sky. It could be quite boring. You could be just a totally depersonalized, self aware entity hanging in space for all eternity in a quiet, contemplative state of peace. |

One of my main problems with Christianity is that anyone who doesnt fully submit themselves to the ways of the Bible and the Church is automatically confined to Hell. Doesnt really sound like the loving, merciful & forgiving God that is often portrayed

No apparently you can do whatever the hell you want and as long as you accept Jesus as your lord and saviour at the end of the day it's all cushtee. That's the most worrying thing about it. U.S. prisons are full of bible thumping inmates and most gangs wear crosses under their brass knucks. What have they to fear? It doesn't matter how ruthless they are in this life. As long as they say 'sorry Jesus, lol' they get into heaven.
