Having an Empire wasnt an "excuse" for anything, countries were Colonised for trade and economic purposes primarily, and so we could continue to compete with nations worldwide, possessing an Empire wasnt exclusive to Britain you know.
Of course the actions of the British Imperialism were reprehensible, although they weren't considered to be by the standards of the time, but Britons do not exactly revere the Empire, far from it I would say.
Hitler wiped out half of the worlds Jewish population, as well as millions of other "undesirables" in the space of three years, I doubt he "wishes he could have inflicted so much suffering as british colonialism"
