Question What Jobs Can You Get Out Of Doing Media Studies?

Today we were asked by a teacher what subjects we're considering to pick in March as GCSE Choices?

And I basically narrowed it down:

Drama
Home Ech
Art
Media Studies
ICT

When I mentioned H.E a few of the lads laughed, but it was fine because then some of them said they were doing it too lol

But yeah anyway, People started laughing and were like 'You can't get any jobs with Media as a Qualification Patrick!' and 'Why do that? It's pointless, you can hardly get good jobs in Media!'

And now I'm abit worried, because it's basically the one subject I want to do most.

But what Jobs can you actually get out of it?

It does 3 of your choice, and a few others your forced to do.

It's ridiculous.

I narrowed it down to 5 I'd like to do, and then pick 3 from that.

Really?

The teachers make it out like your screwed if you don't have certain subjects as choices.

Like I said the other day 'Miss, If I wanted to design video games for a company like Rockstar or EA Games for example, what would I need?' and she was like 'Art, ICT and TD' and then because I was rubbish at TD she basically told me I could never do it then without that.

It can be actually yeah, Everyone has said for years I'm good at art though and a few teachers said it'd be a shame if I didn't do it for GCSE but from what I've seen... it looks like ALOT of work.

Employers mainly look for GCSE at C grade in English and Maths. Under the International Baccalaureate Sciences , A Modern Language , A Humanities subject are also quite repected subjects.

Do the subjects you enjoy and what carears you are looking into in your future. Subjects like Media Studies and Buisness Studies are labled 'Mickey Mouse Courses' by degree snobs but as long as you get high grades in those subjects it shouldn't matter.

Art and design subjects show you are creative and versatile.

I did Media, Art, Drama and Ad Science for my choices then ICT, Science, English and Maths. They were all wicked and Art's really hard the first year but loads of fun the second year.
I'm doing A Level Media, English and Psychology.
Media's not a waste. Everyone assumes its just watching films and talking about them but you do design and lots of things like that as well as developing your analytical skills. Im applying for English and Media at uni and there's loads of jobs that need media specialists because most companies need promotion and stuff.
Do what you enjoy and if you're reasonably good at ICT (especially photoshop) and a bit of english then you could get some really good grades.

What year are you in? Year 9? We picked our GCSE options this time last year- I chose- History, German, Drama, Media, PE

Media is great- really interesting- you can get alot of jobs with media, Tv presenting ect.

PE's my favorite though.

Think now what you wanna do after school, like a subject in college or whatever, make sure you choose that, then choose whatever sounds like you'd like most out of the others. Media is a crap qualification but a decent enough lesson, I done it in school then 1 year in college.

Cos I go to a private school I'm applying for a seriously over-subscribed college so like we're choosing what courses we're taking for college already, I'm taking- English Language, English Literature, Drama and Theater Studies, Politics, Psychology and PE is my reserve

Pretty much, the teachers overstate their importance tbh. I don't know if you're planning to stay on at school/college after GCSE's but A-levels are far more important. As long as you have decent grades in the core subjects, the employer wont be all that bothered about what else you got.

Interests me that, while giving advice on education courses, you spell 'baccalaureate' correctly, but can't spell 'careers', 'respected, 'business' or 'labelled'.

Media studies is a Micky Mouse course.

Well I am no good at spelling some words. I can spell supercalifragilisticexpialidocious WITHOUT google which I got ''baccalaureate'' from. Spelling (Bet that is wrong) isnt a sign of intellegence, Shakespeare himself admited he was not a perfect speller.

Basically, a lot of universities unofficially regard media studies as a lower quality than other subjects. They won't say that to you, but when it comes to selection criteria they tend to ignore it.

But of course you should pick what interests you if you're unsure.
