I know some of you are still quite 'young' and it can be difficult to make a decision on what you'd to do career wise - but for those of you that have an idea of what you'd like to do.... what is it you'd like to do / get into as a career and why?

When I was a very young, I initially wanted to be 'cabin crew' till I realised they were glorified 'bus conductors'. When I hit my teens, I began taking subjects that would have allowed me to go into Law. Didn't work out that way due to circumstances but hasn't worked out badly either.

What are some of you thinking you'd like to get into or ido you find it a hard choice to make at this stage?

I remember I wanted to be a doctor up until I was about 12. Then it became a musician until I realized that as okay as I was at making electronic music and as easy as I get ideas and hear music in my head I absoloutely loathed the process of sitting at a computer with synths piecing music together. I assumed I would enjoy creating it since I love listening to it.

Now I'm hoping to write and direct. I'm doing a film & tv production gig in uni that goes through everything from that to editing to camerawork and whatnot but it's the conception and direction of the actual ideas I am interested in as opposed to the more mechanical jobs.

I just want a job that's in the Media or a job that I'd love doing like something that stands out.

People in my school want to be like Plumbers and Hairdressers and all that bollocks, you know what I say?

I know I'm bigger than that, you get me? So I want to be something like a Game Designer, A Director, A Presenter, An Actor, A Editor For TV, A Producer, A Writer etc?

Something like that.

Plus it pays good.

Just don't know how to get started...

How did you get into that?

Did you have to do any particular GCSE's or anything to get into Film & TV Production?

I never had any idea what I wanted to be when I was in school/college and still don't now

I just want to aim big. I'm one of those people who doesn't actully realise what's going to happen until it does happen. Like my GCSE choices, until the time came and I had a week to choose, I had no idea what I was going to do, my thoughts were chopping and changing. And know I have no idea what I want to do at the end of year 11. Stay at school? I just don't have a clue.

I've always said I wanted to be a TV presenter by my voice would probably annoy people to the high heavens.

I couldn't begin to tell you because I have no idea about the English education system. But my course on it's own is useless. It's just a launching pad to meet people in the industry, make contacts and progress to an even further course. A lot of the things you listed as future careers are based on who you know. You don't really throw around CV's to start getting gigs on sets of TV shows. You have to climb the ladder based on who you know and chances are you are going to start out making the director or floor managers coffee. Everyone starts that way.

You'd want to be really good at English as a natural starting point for a lot of this. They are looking for right brained people with creativity and a flair for visual imagery and communicating ideas.

I've always liked the idea of being a psychologist. Its what I wanna be really. The human mind has always been an interest of mine and analysing people's behaviour and helping people with mental illnesses is something I would genuinely love to do.

Thats not all though, all the little things that psychologists say interest me too like if you write on a blank sheet of paper and your writing edges upwards it means your happy as a person bit if it edges downwards your quite unhappy. I love that sort of stuff too.

Something to do with Child Psychology atm. I think its fascinating. If I pass my A levels, I hope I can do some kind of course on it at Uni.

Patrick - do you have any idea how much money plumbers make? Honest to gawd, they make a bloody fortune -but you're either 'into' that type of work or not - got to be said, part of their work aint pleasant!

I've always sort of envied 'creative' people, never really had that kind of brain. Like the work you want to get into, and what Stu has described - I think that sounds really interesting, non boring type work but as I say, I think you've got to have that type of mind.

Good luck to the pair of you... I hope it works out. That must be a good feeling.... actually ending up doing something that you always wanted to do (even better if you really enjoy it too!)

True what you've said - in those type of fields, its more a case of who you know a lot of the time to get you 'into it get you a foot in the door' - once you get in, you get the chance to shine, and after thatn, there are so many avenues that can lead off from it.

See, this is what made me start the thread. When I started secondary school - I had no idea what subjects to chose, no idea what I wanted - then ended up tinkering with Law (and then much later, did psychology - for nothing more than interest rather than as a career - too old at that point anyhow).

I still think it must take a very dedicated, very focused person who can decide and follow that through into adulthood and beyond. (and if that comes across as partonising to you, it's not meant to - I'm conscious that I don't know what age you are!). I still think it's a hard call to make - and often, it's not until you've actually tried working in a particular field that you realise "what I wanted, isn't what I enjoy".
