This, a few hundred years ago it was prefectly normal really for men to cheat on their wives, or at least it wouldnt have been unusual for them to do so or to visit brothels etc. whereas if a woman did the same she'd have been disgraced. I guess it follows on from there where it was more socially acceptable for men to do as they please while a woman was effectively bound to servitude
