The plastic paddy phenomena is hardly as much of a nationwide epidemic as you're making it out to be, Paddy. Plenty of them genuinly have Irish roots. Plenty think the Irish are thick micks who still go around in wooden shoes. That's certainly not wanting to be Irish.
