The table shows the seepage of wealth westwards along the Thames corridor through the Cotswolds to the West Country, and the rise of seaside favourites such as Salcombe. It also pinpoints the star towns that have risen on the strength of their beauty alone - Petworth in Sussex, for example, and Ambleside in Cumbria. In the north it shows the effect of the Cheshire champagne set and the multi-millionaire footballer phenomenon.

Are you saying that there are no poor people in London? Is that what you're saying? And DO try to just answer rather than post a load of links and other people's lists.

I'm saying that most of the wealth of the country is generated and resides in the South - the "wealth" of the Northern "residents" is generated from Premier Division football and second-home owners, the former being peripatetic anyway and the latter already living in the South or abroad .....

Unlike other posters I try to substantiate my assertions with facts or at least related data .....

You said "You labour under the illusion that all the rich people are down south" - well, apparently MOST are, so no real "illusion" there, then .....

More people live in the south... and it's a MASSIVE generalisation to say that the wealth of northern residents is generated from footballers and second home-owners. That IS what you said... isn't it. What about the rich people who are northern by birth and who live in the south. Do you dispise them with as much fervour as you dispise rich southerners?

You're skating around the issue anyway. This thread is about Newham. Which is in London, and is full of poor people.

I believe you're evading the issue .....

Apparently, full of "ethnically diverse" poor people with a high fertility rate :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newham

Quote:
Newham has the highest young population and one of the lowest White British populations in the country according to the 2001 Census. The borough has the second highest percentage of Muslims in Britain (24.3%).

When using Simpson's Diversity Index on 10 aggregated ethnic groups, the 2001 census identified Newham as the most ethnically diverse district in England and Wales, with 9 wards in the top 15. However, when using the 16 ethnic categories in the Census so that White Irish and White Other ethnic minorities are also included in the analysis, Newham becomes the 2nd most ethnically diverse borough with 6 out of the top 15 wards, behind Brent with 7 out of the top 15 wards.

The main ethnic groups are whites and Asians. Based on 2006 estimates by the Office for National Statistics, over 39% of the population is white, of which 32.6% are British, 1.1% are Irish, and 5% are from other white backgrounds. Approximately 38% of the population is Asian, of which 10.2% are Indian, 7% are Bangladeshi, 13.9% are Pakistani, and 5.1% are from other Asian backgrounds. Approximately 20% of the population is black, of which 6.5% are Caribbean, 12.4% are African, and 1.1% are from other black backgrounds. In addition, 1.6% of the population is Chinese, and 2.6% are from other ethnic groups. Newham has the highest fertility rate in the country at 2.87, as of 2009, compared to the national average of 1.95.
Additional info :

Quote:
The borough was formed by merging the former area of the Essex county borough of East Ham and the county borough of West Ham as a borough of the newly formed Greater London, on 1 April 1965.

The council is actively campaigning to have Newham officially considered part of Inner London for all purposes in order to increase its level of government grant by £60 million.

There is, surprisingly, a directly elected mayor of Newham
Essex in London - if Newham becomes Inner, will Basildon become Outer .....

See, this is what happens when someone gets all their information from Google. Newham is not in Essex. Newham is in London. I come from Newham. My relatives were were bombed out of West Ham and Canning Town... which at the time were in LONDON, although Newham had not yet been formed. To suggest Newham isn't even London shows how little you know about the subject.

You suck all the fun out of a debate because you cannot debate. All you can do is post other people's words and argue. It's boring, very boring. I'm going to ignore you from now on. Please don't quote my posts and associate them with your nonsense in future.

http://www.genealogyinengland.com/In...onboroughs.htm

Quote:
In 1965 the 28 metropolitan boroughs were almagamated into 12 Inner London boroughs and joined together with 20 new Outer London boroughs (a mixture of 3 county boroughs and numerous urban districts) to create Greater London. The new boroughs took in the rest of Middlesex (which then ceased to exist as a county) and parts of the neighbouring counties of Surrey, Kent, Essex and Hertfordshire. The City of London remained a separate entity.

London borough : Newham

Previous authorities : 1. East Ham (C) ; 2. West Ham (C) ; 3. North Woolwich
(Part of Woolwich (M))

Ancient counties : 1. Essex ; 2. Essex ; 3. Kent
