I'm not sure that their past doesn't have some bearing. Why shouldn't it?
I don't know whether Helen has told them about her past, or kept quiet about it - but she takes a strange moral stance on some things given her past.
People make mistakes it is true, people make mistakes in the house too - what's the difference?
Helen isn't fundamentally more honest than anyone else in there as far as I can see although she makes very loud claims about her own honesty and integrity - which is just amusing.
