Yes, but this is exactly the type of regime fundamentalists wish to install here.

I applaud his foolish bravery in trying to draw attention to such a barbaric, oppressive regime.

I know, but thankfully most people here realise what is wrong and what is right...

They will never win. I'm sure they will kill a few people in the UK and I'm sure there may be explosions/bombs etc, but they will never win.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was another war within the next 10 years.

We pulled out too soon and look what is happening.

This story highlights the glaring differences between the UK and Saudi Arabla with respect to religious intelorance and freedom of speech.

Anybody can criticise our political and religious leaders, our form of govt and our religious doctrines. Rightly or wrongly everyone has the right to have their voice heard without fear of violent repercussions from the state.

We have seen this before in middle eastern theocracies where anyone who dares to question the status quo can be violently punished and imprisoned for years.

But in the west all criticisms are voiced and debated and if they carry any substance then a wider debate can be started. That is the nature of free speech , that is the nature of democracy.

Yet in Saudi Arabia people are trapped in the equivalent of a fascist police state where one wrong word or comment can lead to savage consequences.

Someone once said what is the time diff between London and Riyadh, I think the answer is about 500 years.

One of the greatest myths ever sold to the public, done for purely business reasons as we sell arms , planes, military hardware to them and in return they give us a cheap plentiful supply of oil.

Yet the form of Islam practised mostly in the Saudi Arabian peninsula is Wahhabism which is so extreme even the Taliban are considered more liberal.

This form of Islam is the most repressive imaginable and has resulted in many of the worst terrorists coming from that country, responsible for 911 amongst others.

This oppressive regime in my view should be called out for its disgusting and perverted human rights abuses especially to women.

And the hypocrisy from the UK govt in being friendly with this country actually makes me want to puke.

Only 4% of oil imported to the UK comes from the Middle East.

I think it's more a case of keeping your friends close and your enemies closer.

4% or 40% it doesn't change the fact we treat this regime with kid gloves affording them special status in this country with one on one royal state visits, cosying up to our royal family, and this done regardless of the many and varied human right abuses carried out by this embarrassment of a country.

I see no reason why we should be regarding ourselves as "an embarrassment". Rather be on good terms with dubious and/or archaic regimes for the sake of diplomacy than be at loggerheads with no chance of talks or negotiation at all. There are plenty of countries around the world that we're on good political terms with but whose regime we deplore. Look at the lengths we've gone to schmoozing China, a country not without its Human Rights abuses. Importing only 4% of our oil from the Middle East, how much would come directly from Saudi? 2%? 1%? Less? It doesn't fit with your idea that "we sell arms , planes, military hardware to them and in return they give us a cheap plentiful supply of oil."
