At our school if we're seen using it's taken away from us (and sometimes given detention), and then we get it back after 1 day, then on second time after a week, then a month, it builds up..
Even then I think that's harsh because some lessons let us use them, eg. as a timer in science.

I always find rules like this astounding and actually pretty out of order. Confiscating a phone for the remainder of the day is understandable and above board, but surely there's got to be some legal issues with withholding someone's property (especially if the student happens to have actually bought it themselves) for such lengthy amounts of time? It's effectively theft.
I would find it hilarious to hear one day of a story in which a student has taken a school to court and won over an incident like this.
