They link tbh, iconic subjects.

Anyway stop looking into it too much and taking a low-budget British film so seriously

True!

It's hard not to when that's the lens you watched the film through though in all seriousness at a subconscious level it does play into people's ideas about the 'chav' culture and who and what to fear. As much as I loved it, something like Little Britain is guilty of the very same thing

But anyway, I realise Jake only wants a film recommendation, so I shall leave it there

It is when you look at it closely. This review I found does a pretty good job.

You only have to see this review in the Mail to see what I mean too:

Quote:
It's a thoroughly credible set-up and the process of escalation whereby Jenny and Steve alienate, then anger these feral youths until they're ready to stab, torture and even burn them to death is worryingly authentic.

Unlike most horror films, in which the heroes steer themselves into danger by their own stupidity, Jenny and Steve behave with complete plausibility and a tragically unrequited sense of kindness and social responsibility.

Eden Lake delivers plenty of tension and vicarious excitement. But it's also willing to say what other films have been too scared or politically correct to mention: the true horrors we fear day to day are not supernatural bogeymen or monsters created by scientists. They're our own youth.

Uncaring or absentee parents are the true villains, mostly unseen until the unpleasant end, but an implied presence throughout.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz...#ixzz4WQqZHOOs

There's no attempt at character development on the sides of the antagonists either, no explanation or implication of any social factors that may have led to their behaviour, just a very one dimensional, stereotypical portrayal of working class youths (or rather 'chavs'), positioning them as people to be feared. Compare that to something like Attack the Block (sorry it's the only film I'm used to comparing it with This is England would be another great example, but it's not horror) which does go into the backgrounds of the gang, and the class prejudices ingrained in Eden Lake are as clear as day.

The whole thing is gross

You do raise some good points to be fair

But that still doesn't put me off the film, sorry. It's still iconic!

Oh I can understand why people would like it if they like horror, I just think it's good for people to be aware of the social context which these things exist in

Like I mentioned in passing earlier, I loved Little Britain and still do, but Vicky Pollard as a caricature for example is guilty of much the same thing

(Eden Lake was the most disgusting film I've ever seen btw. I genuinely felt violated after it finished).

Eden Lake was gory and brutal but I don't have a problem with heavy gore in films if they don't take anything away from the storyline and actually serve a purpose. It's those films that just rely on the use of excessive blood and gore for the sake of it like the Saw sequels that annoy me.

Lights Out: 6-6.5/10 (average movie)
Don't Breathe: 8-8.5/10 (very good)

Never seen Eden Lake.

A Serbian Film is probably the most disturbing movie ever. I watched it with a bunch of friends a while ago after someone suggested it, which made it kinda funny with the reactions and all, but it's sooo gross/twisted and also just not a well put together movie in general. 2/10
