I agree with this, but selfies as there now called, have been around since cameras began really when u think about it.

I take loads of selfies, I barely ever upload them though. I don't mind other people uploading them though unless they look perfect or edited and the person is like 'looking rough today' then it's just attention seeking tbh.

I don't mind them in small doses. Like I take selfies and at most it becomes a profile picture on Facebook once or twice a year.

Can't stand these people who post a selfie every 2 seconds of the day though. Eurgh.

Selfies have been around since the 1800s really, only took off more in the 1900s and then from 2005 it hit off as more of a 'thing'. It's only such a big thing now though because of the internet and the media.

it's genuinely beyond me that so many people hate someone taking a picture of themselves.

I don't mind them, but what I do find annoying is people who are constantly posting them. A selfie itself isn't the issue, it's how often a person takes them and shares them that is. Also on a related note, I have quite big lips and it really ****ing gets on my tits when I get accused of putting on a duckface - IT'S HOW I BLOODY LOOK, I CAN'T HELP HAVING A GORGEOUS TOP LIP

It's funny cos if you actually changed what you said to...

....You would not only be more factually correct in terms of what people have said on this thread but you also wouldn't be twisting words to make it sound like people are annoyed over nothing.

Just saying.

I don't have a problem with people taking pictures of themselves, it just reaches a level of irritation when every time you look online there's hundreds of selfies from people, doing their best to look sexy and attractive but yet include the tag 'I look so horrible lolz' and then bask in the attention and the compliments that they fished for, it's annoying, if you think you look like ****, don't post the goddamn picture

...hawwwww....just think, you were born with that asset and others are paying a lot of money to look like you....maybe you were the original selfies that all others have tried to imitate...so it's your fault.....I knew it/Z strikes again....

Yeah like some people said I don't mind people taking them but when your uploading them like 2 or three times a week that's when it gets annoying. I don t really take selfies myself but don't mind other people taking them

A guy I know (I was going to say "a guy I'm friends with" but I haven't seen him in about 3 years and I sort of dislike him now because...) has, I'd say, on Instagram, about 90% selfies and 10% other things and he posts two or three times a day. At best he's a 4.5/10. STOP IT.

...hmmmm, that made me cringe a little bit though because although it might be a bit too much, is it not a good thing that he obviously has a lot of confidence in himself and how he looks..?...I mean with the selfies in general, it at least shows people are confident with their physical appearance..

I think there's a line between happy with how you look and compliment fishing that isn't always so obvious; this guy hashtags all his photos with very specific hashtags to make sure he gets lots of likes and most of his selfies are basically the same photo over and over; couple that with it being on Instagram, meaning you see them regularly, and it becomes irritating. I think if you were happy with how you looked and wanted to be complimented, it's fine to post one every once in a while; but if you're doing it regularly and hashtagging it to the high heavens, it's attention seeking and annoying. Seeking attention in itself isn't annoying; it's just that constantly posting the same selfie over and over is annoying AND attention seeking for the same compliments and not being satisfied with them so doing it again...

I think people who post the most selfies are either deeply unhappy with how they look or are so happy with how they look that they're arrogant about it.

..I think I'm just trying to think about why people do it..(and maybe over-thinking..)... just because I don't go on any social sites so I don't see many selfies, other than the celebrity ones that are posted here because I don't read much celebrity 'gossip' type stuff either...so I guess I don't see enough to find them annoying particularly...but I agree with your last bit in that I think it would either be complete confidence or total lack of it and maybe needing people to comment favourably..?...I can't actually get my head around the confident bit if I'm honest though because if someone had that much confidence in themselves then they would know how they looked physically so why post so many selfies/why need those compliments..?..unless obviously it was a celebrity who may just want to always be in the public's faces because they didn't have so much 'talent' ...with this guy that you know personally..would you say he was a confident person and completely at ease with himself or not...?....

I don't really know to be honest, at first I thought it was an insecurity thing but now I think he just loves himself and is a bit of a poser

..I think you were right though, I think maybe some people are quite insecure and them feeling more secure if they get complimented etc doesn't seem such a bad thing really ..then there are probably just posers who are attention seeking...but it's hard to know why they would attention seek if they feel they look so great anyway....and then maybe some people just do it for 'LOLS' because it might be a funny pose etc...

..but then if the not confident people were insecure about their appearance then would they really put up selfies because as well as compliments, they would be leaving themselves open to criticism as well, which they really wouldn't want....?....hmmmm, I think this is all getting far to complicated .....there is probably no thought goes into it whatsoever, they're just twiddling with their phones/take a selfie/post it and don't even realise how many times they're doing that..to the point where they're driving people crazy with looking at them all the time.....

I think the bit in bold is what really happens, but I think the psychology behind it indicates that they're either massively insecure or overly secure in their appearance - but only when we're talking about people who do it all the time... I don't think there's anything wrong with the occasional selfie for compliments, it's nice to be complimented and sometimes you need a bit of validation and you don't always get it randomly so sometimes you have to go looking for it specifically. When it becomes a regular thing, that's when it's annoying to other people, I think.

I don't think that people who are massively insecure would actually post that many photos of themselves online though, if you genuinely thought you looked terrible in a picture why would you want everyone looking at it?

I think when I say insecure I mean more people who generally feel insecure, so they take lots of selfies and post the best ones online, on a regular basis, to fish for compliments in an attempt to convince themselves that they're good looking as a gap filling measure instead of actually dealing with their poor body image, if that makes sense. So it's not that they think the pictures are bad, it's that they think they themselves are bad and are posting filtered pictures of themselves from their best angles to try and get some form of validation to try and stop themselves from feeling so bad, but it's just a quick fix and it never works.

..see, this is what I'm thinking as well, what Niamh said ..that if someone had a poor body image then would they be posting lots of selfies or pics of themselves because even it they did 'filter' the pics as you say, Z...their poor body image would still be there because they don't see what others see, anyway..?...it's more in their own thoughts/type thing so would they want to leave themselves open to criticism as we all know that the internet and social sites can be quite cruel..?..but would they even want to be 'seen' anyway..?...

self obsessed boring vein twats , this leads to narcissism, self obsession, eating disorders, body dismorphia and mental illness and we fail to nip it in the bud so it gets worse and worse
